Book Synopsis Jihadism, Foreign Fighters and Radicalization in the EU by : Inmaculada Marrero Rocha

This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jihadism, Foreign Fighters and Radicalization in the EU addresses the organizational and strategic changes in terrorism in Europe as a result of urban jihadism and the influx of foreign fighters of European nationality or residence. Examining the different types of responses to the treatment of radicalization and its consequences in the recruitment of young urban fighters and jihadists, this book offers a framework for understanding the process of violent radicalization. It critically analyses political and legal responses that have taken place within the European framework, whilst also examining a series of functional responses from social and behavioural psychology. This book then goes on to develop an explanatory model from an economic standpoint, exploring the need to adapt the fight against the financing of terrorism to the changes in the sources of financing jihadist cells and foreign fighters. Furthermore, the volume draws on experience from the prison sector to assess the process of radicalization and the possibilities of intervention. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, this book will be of great interest to students of terrorism and counter-terrorism, radicalization, European politics, radical Islam and security studies.

This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Phraseology in Legal and Institutional Settings by : Stanislaw Goźdź-Roszkowski
Download or read book Phraseology in Legal and Institutional Settings written by Stanislaw Goźdź-Roszkowski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-07 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of major developments in the study of how phraseology is used in a wide range of different legal and institutional contexts. This recent interest has been mainly sparked by the development of corpus linguistics research, which has both demonstrated the centrality of phraseological patterns in language and provided researchers with new and powerful analytical tools. However, there have been relatively few empirical studies of word combinations in the domain of law and in the many different contexts where legal discourse is used. This book seeks to address this gap by presenting some of the latest developments in the study of this linguistic phenomenon from corpus-based and interdisciplinary perspectives. The volume draws on current research in legal phraseology from a variety of perspectives: translation, comparative/contrastive studies, terminology, lexicography, discourse analysis and forensic linguistics. It contains contributions from leading experts in the field, focusing on a wide range of issues amply illustrated through in-depth corpus-informed analyses and case studies. Most contributions to this book are multilingual, featuring different legal systems and legal languages. The volume will be a valuable resource for linguists interested in phraseology as well as lawyers and legal scholars, translators, lexicographers, terminologists and students who wish to pursue research in the area.

Book Synopsis Exploring the Syntax-Semantics Interface by : Robert D. van Valin, Jr.
Download or read book Exploring the Syntax-Semantics Interface written by Robert D. van Valin, Jr. and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-07-07 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language is a system of communication in which grammatical structures function to express meaning in context. While all languages can achieve the same basic communicative ends, they each use different means to achieve them, particularly in the divergent ways that syntax, semantics and pragmatics interact across languages. This book looks in detail at how structure, meaning, and communicative function interact in human languages. Working within the framework of Role and Reference Grammar (RRG), Van Valin proposes a set of rules, called the 'linking algorithm', which relates syntactic and semantic representations to each other, with discourse-pragmatics playing a role in the linking. Using this model, he discusses the full range of grammatical phenomena, including the structures of simple and complex sentences, verb and argument structure, voice, reflexivization and extraction restrictions. Clearly written and comprehensive, this book will be welcomed by all those working on the interface between syntax, semantics and pragmatics.
Book Synopsis Theft of the Nation by : Donald Cressey
Download or read book Theft of the Nation written by Donald Cressey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organized crime in America today is not the tough hoodlums familiar to moviegoers and TV watchers. It is more sophisticated, with many college graduates, gifted with organizational genius, all belonging to twenty-four tightly knit "families," who have corrupted legitimate business and infiltrated some of the highest levels of local, state, and federal government. Their power reaches into Congress, into the executive and judicial branches, police agencies, and labor unions, and into such business enterprises as real estate, retail stores, restaurants, hotels, linen-supply houses, and garbage-collection routes. How does organized crime operate? How dangerous is it? What are the implications for American society? How may we cope with it? In answering these questions, Cressey asserts that because organized crime provides illicit goods and services demanded by legitimate society, it has become part of legitimate society. This fascinating account reveals the parallels: the growth of specialization, "big-business practices" (pooling of capital and reinvestment of profits; fringe benefits like bail money), and government practices (negotiated settlements and peace treaties, defined territories, fair-trade agreements). For too long we have, as a society, concerned ourselves only with superficial questions about organized crime. "Theft of the Nation" focuses on to a more profound and searching level. Of course, organized crime exists. Cressey not only establishes this fact, but proceeds to explore it rigorously and with penetration. One need not agree with everything Cressey writes to conclude that no one, after the publication of "Theft of the Nation", can be knowledgeable about organized crime without having read this book.

Book Synopsis The Politics of Protection by : Jef Huysmans
Download or read book The Politics of Protection written by Jef Huysmans and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-05-17 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book shows how from the end of the Cold War, the security agenda has been transformed and redefined, academically and politically. It focuses on the theme of protection. It moves away from the dominant question of whom or what is threatening to the crucial questions of who is to be protected, and in the case of conflicting claims, who has the capacity to define whose needs prevail. It also poses the question of political agency in relation to some of the most significant questions raised in relation to the governance of insecurity and protection in the contemporary world. The authors identify and explore issues that challenge or raise a number of questions about the traditional notion that states are to protect their citizens through retaining a monopoly over the legitimate use of violence.
Book Synopsis The Anti-money Laundering Systems in the Context of Globalisation by : Liliya Gelemerova
Download or read book The Anti-money Laundering Systems in the Context of Globalisation written by Liliya Gelemerova and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past two decades, money laundering has been presented by policy makers as a grave global threat to the world economy, undermining its foundations while allowing trillions of dollars in dirty money to slip into the upperworld economy. In order to fend off this threat, the authorities put into place a global mechanism of surveillance and control, imposing heavy multi-million dollar burdens on the financial industry, ultimately to be paid by customers. Despite these efforts and strengthened state control, the threat still appears to be the same as it was 20 years ago. Moreover, the real menace now appears instead to be the result of the behavior of respectable, but recklessly operating, bankers. What is going on? This work critically investigates the origins and foundations of the global anti-money laundering policy. The book describes its obscure inception and exposes the incoherent arguments being accepted as "conventional wisdom" that policy makers use to introduce new and stricter regulations. Providing a step-by-step analysis of the current fear-driven policy, the book makes clear that this important subject needs to be addressed within a reasoned and realistic framework. It provides an awareness of the serious consequences of a policy that appears to have lost its sense of proportionality and to be based on poorly substantiated fear.
Book Synopsis Governing Societies: Political Perspectives On Domestic And International Rule by : Dean, Mitchell
Download or read book Governing Societies: Political Perspectives On Domestic And International Rule written by Dean, Mitchell and published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK). This book was released on 2007-06-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What structures of power are involved in governing societies and how are they connected? How is the liberal idea of governing through freedom linked to the increasing control of marginalised populations? Have we reached the end of history in which governing largely concerns self-governing individuals, networks and communities? Should we dispense with the 'container view of society' and contemplate the 'death of the social'? Today, many people in academia, politics and business, question the idea of being able to govern society. The nation state and sovereign government are displaced by globalization and individualization. Mitchell Dean focuses on ‘governing societies’ as a distinctive project that continues to define political life today. The book offers a critical analysis of contemporary liberal approaches to governing societies both in domestic and international affairs. Governing Societies provides an overview of current perspectives and theories and examines recent transformations in techniques and rationalities of rule. It presents a new argument for the importance and transformation of sovereignty and powers of life and death and how they are integral to governing liberal-democratic societies. The book is key reading for undergraduate and postgraduate students of sociology and politics, as well as researchers and academics.
Download or read book india in the written by Taras Kuzio and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 1999-08-20 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State and Institution Building in Ukraine represents the first in-depth and comprehensive study of state building in Ukraine. As opposed to previous books, which have focused on the political and economic transformation of the Soviet successor states, this volume argues that a market economy and democracy cannot exist in the absence of an effective state and governing institutions. Ukraine was only a quasi-state within the former USSR when it declared independence in August 1991, and thus it inherited only the rudiments of what is normally considered a "modern state." The development of a viable and capable state with effective institutions was prioritized by the executive and legislative branches who understood that a democracy, civil society, rule of law, and market economy could not be created in the absence of a genuine, functioning state. This study is the first to survey institution and state building in Ukraine by placing it within a comparative and theoretical perspective, challenging many of the current misconceptions about Ukraine and other post-Soviet countries.
