We explicitly verify the performance bounds of the adaptive flight control system at various flight conditions. We demonstrate that the resulting L1 adaptive controller does not require tuning or redesign from one flight condition to another. Furthermore, once designed according to the theoretical guidelines, the L1 adaptive controller ensures uniform transient and steady-state performance across the entire flight envelope in the presence of significantly coupled dynamics and control surface failures.

Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive overview of the recently developed L1 adaptive control theory, including detailed proofs of the main results. The key feature of the L1 adaptive control theory is the decoupling of adaptation from robustness. The architectures of L1 adaptive control theory have guaranteed transient performance and robustness in the presence of fast adaptation, without enforcing persistent excitation, applying gain-scheduling, or resorting to high-gain feedback.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book details the designing of hybrid control strategies for practical systems containing time varying uncertainties, disturbances, nonlinearities, unknown parameters, unmodelled dynamics, delays, etc., concurrently. In this book, the advantages of different controllers will be brought together to produce superior control performance for the practical systems. Being aware of the advantages of adaptive controller to tackle unknown constant, time varying uncertainties and time varying disturbances, a variant of adaptive controller, namely L1 adaptive controller, is hybridized with other strategies. In this book, to facilitate optimal parameter setting of the basic L1 adaptive controller, stochastic optimization technique will be hybridized with it. The stability of the optimization technique along with the controller will be guaranteed analytically with the help of spectral radius convergence. The proposed method exhibits satisfactory exploration and exploitation capabilities. Again, this book will throw light on tackling nonlinearities along with uncertainties and disturbances by hybridizing fuzzy logic with L1 adaptive controller. The performances of the designed controllers will be compared with different control methodologies to validate their effectiveness. The overall stability of the nonlinear system with the designed controller will be guaranteed with the help of fuzzy Lyapunov function to retain the zonal behaviour of the system. This fuzzy PDC-L1 adaptive controller is efficient to tackle nonlinearities and at the same time cancels unknown constant, time varying uncertainties and time varying disturbances adequately. This book will also contain four simulation case studies to validate fruitfulness of the designed controllers. To demonstrate the superior control ability of these controllers in tackling practical system, three experimental case studies will also be provided.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brief presents several aspects of flight dynamics, which are usually omitted or briefly mentioned in textbooks, in a concise, self-contained, and rigorous manner. The kinematic and dynamic equations of an aircraft are derived starting from the notion of the derivative of a vector and then thoroughly analysed, interpreting their deep meaning from a mathematical standpoint and without relying on physical intuition. Moreover, some classic and advanced control design techniques are presented and illustrated with meaningful examples. Distinguishing features that characterize this brief include a definition of angular velocity, which leaves no room for ambiguities, an improvement on traditional definitions based on infinitesimal variations. Quaternion algebra, Euler parameters, and their role in capturing the dynamics of an aircraft are discussed in great detail. After having analyzed the longitudinal- and lateral-directional modes of an aircraft, the linear-quadratic regulator, the linear-quadratic Gaussian regulator, a state-feedback H-infinity optimal control scheme, and model reference adaptive control law are applied to aircraft control problems. To complete the brief, an appendix provides a compendium of the mathematical tools needed to comprehend the material presented in this brief and presents several advanced topics, such as the notion of semistability, the Smith–McMillan form of a transfer function, and the differentiation of complex functions: advanced control-theoretic ideas helpful in the analysis presented in the body of the brief. A Mathematical Perspective on Flight Dynamics and Control will give researchers and graduate students in aerospace control an alternative, mathematically rigorous means of approaching their subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robust and Adaptive Control shows the reader how to produce consistent and accurate controllers that operate in the presence of uncertainties and unforeseen events. Driven by aerospace applications the focus of the book is primarily on continuous-dynamical systems. The text is a three-part treatment, beginning with robust and optimal linear control methods and moving on to a self-contained presentation of the design and analysis of model reference adaptive control (MRAC) for nonlinear uncertain dynamical systems. Recent extensions and modifications to MRAC design are included, as are guidelines for combining robust optimal and MRAC controllers. Features of the text include: · case studies that demonstrate the benefits of robust and adaptive control for piloted, autonomous and experimental aerial platforms; · detailed background material for each chapter to motivate theoretical developments; · realistic examples and simulation data illustrating key features of the methods described; and · problem solutions for instructors and MATLAB® code provided electronically. The theoretical content and practical applications reported address real-life aerospace problems, being based on numerous transitions of control-theoretic results into operational systems and airborne vehicles that are drawn from the authors’ extensive professional experience with The Boeing Company. The systems covered are challenging, often open-loop unstable, with uncertainties in their dynamics, and thus requiring both persistently reliable control and the ability to track commands either from a pilot or a guidance computer. Readers are assumed to have a basic understanding of root locus, Bode diagrams, and Nyquist plots, as well as linear algebra, ordinary differential equations, and the use of state-space methods in analysis and modeling of dynamical systems. Robust and Adaptive Control is intended to methodically teach senior undergraduate and graduate students how to construct stable and predictable control algorithms for realistic industrial applications. Practicing engineers and academic researchers will also find the book of great instructional value.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerospace vehicles are by their very nature a crucial environment for safety-critical systems. By virtue of an effective safety control system, the aerospace vehicle can maintain high performance despite the risk of component malfunction and multiple disturbances, thereby enhancing aircraft safety and the probability of success for a mission. Autonomous Safety Control of Flight Vehicles presents a systematic methodology for improving the safety of aerospace vehicles in the face of the following occurrences: a loss of control effectiveness of actuators and control surface impairments; the disturbance of observer-based control against multiple disturbances; actuator faults and model uncertainties in hypersonic gliding vehicles; and faults arising from actuator faults and sensor faults. Several fundamental issues related to safety are explicitly analyzed according to aerospace engineering system characteristics; while focusing on these safety issues, the safety control design problems of aircraft are studied and elaborated on in detail using systematic design methods. The research results illustrate the superiority of the safety control approaches put forward. The expected reader group for this book includes undergraduate and graduate students but also industry practitioners and researchers.
