Book Synopsis Gustave Courbet: The School of Nature by : Carine Joly
Download or read book Gustave Courbet: The School of Nature written by Carine Joly and published by Silvana Editoriale. This book was released on 2021-10-05 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the French master of Realism launched an unvarnished and brooding vision of nature With a vehement, political commitment to Realism in art, French painter Gustave Courbet embraced the harsh beauty of the natural world in his landscapes. The French countryside and the islands of Lake Geneva are represented as Courbet himself saw them, with overcast skies and muddy beaches captured in rich dark tones, and limestone cliffs rendered with the sharp stroke of a palette knife. This volume presents a series of important pieces by Courbet, sourced mainly from the collections of the Gustave Courbet Institute and the Musée Courbet of Ornans, as well as artworks by other 19th-century painters influenced by his style. The publication also delves into the significant contributions of art critic George Besson and painter Guy Bardone, both of whom were dedicated to the preservation of Courbet's complicated legacy through the acquisition of the artist's birthplace in Ornans and the conservation of his art. Gustave Courbet(1819-77) eschewed the Romantic artistic conventions of his time and led 19th-century painting into the era of Realism. His paintings were strictly based on the world to hand, depicting typical laborers and unidealized landscapes with the severity of everyday reality. Controversial in France for both his art and his politics, Courbet was frequently the target of censorship, and he was briefly imprisoned for his involvement in an insurrection against the Parisian government. Courbet spent the last several years of his life in self-imposed exile in Switzerland.

Book Synopsis Nature’s Patterns and the Fractional Calculus by : Bruce J. West

This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complexity increases with increasing system size in everything from organisms to organizations. The nonlinear dependence of a system’s functionality on its size, by means of an allometry relation, is argued to be a consequence of their joint dependency on complexity (information). In turn, complexity is proven to be the source of allometry and to provide a new kind of force entailed by a system‘s information gradient. Based on first principles, the scaling behavior of the probability density function is determined by the exact solution to a set of fractional differential equations. The resulting lowest order moments in system size and functionality gives rise to the empirical allometry relations. Taking examples from various topics in nature, the book is of interest to researchers in applied mathematics, as well as, investigators in the natural, social, physical and life sciences. Contents Complexity Empirical allometry Statistics, scaling and simulation Allometry theories Strange kinetics Fractional probability calculus

Download or read book National Soul written by Marylin J. McKay and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2002-05-13 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining their social, political, and economic contexts, McKay shows how the murals of this period glorified Canada as a modern nation state, extolled the virtues of commerce and industry, inculcated conventions of gender and race, and shared the intensity of nationalistic sentiment that led to the work of the more renowned painters of Toronto's Group of Seven. Bringing together for the first time a body of Canadian work - civic, commercial, religious, and private - that has been largely ignored by art historians, A National Soul challenges previous histories of Canadian painting. This generously illustrated book reproduces seldom-seen works from across the country, many of which have been moved or destroyed, and includes a comprehensive listing of all works from the period, their original and present locations, and their state of preservation.
