Book Synopsis The Italian Cantata in Vienna by : Lawrence Bennett
Download or read book The Italian Cantata in Vienna written by Lawrence Bennett and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of music for the imperial court “from a professor, choral director, and professional tenor who has studied Viennese cantatas for half a century” (Lowell Lindgren, Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Lawrence Bennett provides a comprehensive study of the rich repertoire of accompanied vocal chamber music that entertained the imperial family in Vienna and their guests throughout the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. The cantata became a form of elite entertainment composed to amuse listeners during banquets or pay homage to members of the royal family during special occasions. Concentrating on Baroque cantatas composed in the Habsburg court, Bennett draws extensively on primary source material to explore the stylistic changes that occurred within the genre in the generations before Haydn and Mozart. “An important book. It deserves to be warmly welcomed not only by scholars but also by performers of Baroque vocal chamber music.” —Early Music “Shed[s] light on an important yet seldom-discussed repertory, written by someone whose expertise is unquestionable.” —Music and Letters “By taking multiple analytical approaches, Bennett establishes an overall understanding while also demonstrating how individual composers approached the genre. . . . Recommended.” —Choice “An important tool for understanding the context in which cantatas were composed and performed, and in which the Hapsburgs’ important music collection . . . was created.” —Notes “A wealth of new information . . . from a scholar who writes clearly and perceptively, and who has devoted decades of attention to the material.” —Steven Saunders, Charles A. Dana Professor of Music, Colby College
Book Synopsis Daisy: Not Your Average Super-sleuth! The Siege of Castle Montazzini by : R T Green

This book was released on 2023-09-09 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A few days relaxation in an ancient castle on the shores of Lake Lugano in Northern Italy sounds like an opportunity not to be missed for Daisy and Aidan. Until Leonardo da Vinci, a knight in shining armour, and a tale of greed and debauchery rear their ugly heads, that is. Far from relaxing, our RED heroine begins to wonder if they’ll even escape with their lives! “One of the best cozy mysteries I’ve ever read!” “A real breath of fresh literary air!” Daisy receives an out of the blue phone call from her one-time neighbour back when they lived in London. Gloria invites her and Aidan to visit their castle in the Italian Lakes for a few days break. Married to an Italian businessman, her husband Marcello inherited the castle a few years ago when his wealthy parents passed away. Now living in the impressive sixteenth-century family residence, Gloria thought they may like to see ‘what they’ve done with the place’. As they travel to Italy, Daisy can’t shake off the feeling all is not quite what it seems. She and Gloria have been in touch from time to time, but not had that much contact since they moved away. Her ex-neighbour sounded chirpy on the phone... but perhaps a little too chirpy. Daisy is well aware that sometimes people gush about how happy they are to try and hide just how happy they’re not. She says nothing to Aidan, putting it down to her paranoid gut envisioning problems where none exist, and forces herself to look forward to the few days abroad. They’ve only been in the castle a few hours when Daisy has to admit ignoring her gut feeling was the worst idea ever, realising that what motivated people centuries ago still motivates them today. It’s not looking good... Read about Daisy and our other major series, The Sandie Shaw Mysteries, set in 1920’s Chicago, on the new rtgreen website. And enjoy!

This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book explores the history of risk management in medieval and early modern European maritime business, focusing particularly on 'General Average' – a mechanism by which extraordinary expenses regarding ship or cargo, incurred during a voyage to save the venture, are shared between all participants to protect equity. This volume traces the history of this risk management tool from its origins in the pre-Roman Mediterranean through to its use in the shipping sector today. Contributions range from the Islamic Mediterranean to the Low Countries, and taken together, provide a wide-ranging analysis of social, cultural, and political aspects of pre-modern maritime commerce in Europe.

Book Synopsis The Vincentians: A General History of the Congregation of the Mission by : Luigi Mezzadri, CM
Download or read book The Vincentians: A General History of the Congregation of the Mission written by Luigi Mezzadri, CM and published by New City Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Their mission was humble and simple: to reach the poor country people, who suffered from ignorance of their faith, a debased clergy, and poverty. In response, Vincent De Paul defined the vocation of his “Little Company” as preaching local missions for free, educating the clergy, and working to relieve the people’s poverty. Soon, however, this vocation was complicated by commands to minister to royal families, including Louis xiv of France and the kings and queens of Poland, which would embroil the Vincentians in international and ecclesiastical politics. In addition, they would begin dangerous foreign missions, such as ministering to the Christian captives of the Barbary pirates, the debased colonists and rebellious natives of Madagascar, and the vendetta-prone Corsicans. For the first time, modern readers have a thoroughly researched history based on original documents and the studies of numerous scholars, past and present. It portrays the Vincentians’ daily lives and describes their failings as well as their exalted acts of heroism. It also details the social and political milieus that conditioned their lives and work. It is an important, down-to-earth side of history not often told.

Book Synopsis The bad German and the good Italian by : Filippo Focardi
Download or read book The bad German and the good Italian written by Filippo Focardi and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2023-08-29 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Axis War on the side of Germany, Mussolini's Italy was responsible for serious war crimes, especially in Yugoslavia and Greece. This 'dark side' of the fascist war, however, is not present in the national memory built after 1945. To distinguish Italy from the former German ally and avoid a punitive peace, the monarchist and anti-fascist ruling classes elaborated a master narrative that highlighted the opposition of the Italian people to Mussolini's war and the humanitarian behavior of Italian soldiers, depicted as saviors of Jews. All responsibility for the crimes committed in the Axis war was placed on the shoulders of the Germans, who thus became a convenient alibi for the national conscience.
