Book Synopsis Crusader Castles of the Teutonic Knights (1) by : Stephen Turnbull
Download or read book Crusader Castles of the Teutonic Knights (1) written by Stephen Turnbull and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-12-20 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ALSO AVAILABLE TO BUY AS AN E-BOOK. Throughout their stormy history the Teutonic Knights of Germany have always been the most controversial brotherhood ever to call themselves 'Knights of Christ'.They were the most warlike of the religious orders, and this is reflected in the architecture they left behind. In contrast to the Templars who are remembered for their churches, the Teutonic memorials are the magnificent brick-built castles they built as a result of their conquest of Prussia between 1230 and 1380. Many of these dramatic fortresses still exist today in what is now Poland and provide a unique example of an architectural style that closely reflects the nature of the Order.

Book Synopsis Political Trials in Poland 1981-1986 by : Andrzej Swidlicki
Download or read book Political Trials in Poland 1981-1986 written by Andrzej Swidlicki and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-04-01 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1988, Political Trials in Poland 1981-1986 describes the major political trials which took place in Poland between 1981 and 1986. Based on extensive original research using both official and unofficial information from Poland and interviews with Solidarity activists, it shows how the trials constituted an attempt by the Jaruzelski regime to break the back of the independent Solidarity movement by judicial and penal measures. It discusses how the authorities abused the law and how the law itself leaves much to be desired and it charts the different human rights that were violated in each case. It considers the implications of the abuse of law in this way for the rule of law and the image of the state in communist countries. This book will be of interest to students of history and political science.

Book Synopsis The Baltic Pilgrimage by : Marc C Watson
Download or read book The Baltic Pilgrimage written by Marc C Watson and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2021-12-01 with total page 1016 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In AD 1103, in the central lands of the Rus and the Siberian plains, the earth quaked as it was rent and torn asunder for hundreds of miles southward. Spilling forth from this deep abyss, chasm, was a deluge of enchanted energies and a series of interlocking deities who, having been trapped within the forming of the Earth, now ascended up, residing upon Luna, overlooking the world below. The dark and light energies of magic leaking into the atmosphere, encasing Earth and altering the civilizations upon her forever. Having learned to incorporate these new magical energies into restricted priesthoods, the militaries and daily life of all Europeans and Asians had, by AD 1337, changed wildly. And yet it was also at this time that Europe began to face a new and wholly daunting threat of a unified Lithuania, being the largest landmass kingdom in all of Europe, which was ruled over by the quasi-immortal Undeath Aristocracy. The Teutonic Order, having been invited by the Polish crown into the Baltic for their protection, was now Europe’s, and, even more dire, Christianity’s, last bulwark and defensive line against the encroaching corruption and vile taint of nature that was wrought by the undeath and their monstrous legions of Norr, the rank-and-file infantry who enforced the dark and enslaving rule of the undeath. The coming events and the newly arrived Teutonic member, Ludwig, would change, with steel, anger, and magical spells, not just the course and shape of events in the Baltic, but the very face and future of not just Christianity but humanity as a whole.
Book Synopsis Britain and Poland-Lithuania by : Richard Unger
Download or read book Britain and Poland-Lithuania written by Richard Unger and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-02-28 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In twenty-four papers scholars from Europe and North America examine various aspects of the economies, politics and culture of Britain and Poland-Lithuania from the Middle Ages down to the Third Partition. The similarities between the two seemingly different regions are as surprising as the long-standing connections between the British Isles and East Central Europe. Commercial ties were complemented by migration and by cultural exchange with writers, philosophers and artists in both regions taking an interest in the other. In sections devoted to religion and toleration, trade, diasporas, political theory, and stereotypes among others the authors present a new and unexpected history of the relationship between two states which politically up to 1795 went in opposite directions. Contributors are: Richard Butterwick, Nils Hybel, Wendy Childs, Maryanne Kowaleski, Stanka Kuzmova, Sarah Layfield, Richard D Oram, Emilia Jamroziak, Piotr Guzowski, Derek Keene, Tomasz Gromelski, Pawel Rutkowski, Benedict Wagner-Rundell, John Fudge, Brian Levack, Beata Cieszynska, Waldemar Kowalski, Arthur H. Williamson, M.St. Almut Hillebrand, Peter Paul Bajer, Róisín Healy, Dariusz Rolnik, Jan Wolenski, Aleksandra Koutny-Jones.

Book Synopsis Monuments in gratitude to the Red Army in communist and post-communist Poland by : Dominika Czarnecka
Download or read book Monuments in gratitude to the Red Army in communist and post-communist Poland written by Dominika Czarnecka and published by Harmattan Hongrie. This book was released on 2021-09-24 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: « Monuments in gratitude » to the Red Army in Poland are among the most numerous and well-known commemorative structures from the communist period. This does not mean, however, that the history of their construction and existence has already been extensively studied and described. In post-communist Poland, the « monument heritage » is regarded as an important part of recent history of Poland or of Central-Eastern Europe, even though the topic still gives rise to much controversy. Dominika Czarnecka's book is the first attempt at a synthetic presentation of the history of monuments to the Red Army erected outside of permanent cemeteries in post-war Poland. The work was awarded a distinction at the Wladyslaw Pobóg-Malinowski Contest for the Historical Debut of the year (2014). The Polish-language edition was also among the nominees of the Polityka News Magazine History Award (Polish History Book of the Year) in the debut category (2016).
