Book excerpt: "The Theban Mapping Project (TMP) was established in 1979 to prepare a detailed survey and archaeological database for the Theban Necropolis. As part of its work in the Valley of the Kings, it relocated KV 5. Clearing that tomb, the TMP discovered that what had been thought to be an unimportant, uninteresting, uninscribed pit tomb was actually the largest tomb ever found in Egypt. KV 5 is known to have 150 corridors and chambers on several levels and many more are likely to be discovered. The tomb is unique in size and plan and in its function as a family mausoleum for many of the sons of the pharaoh Rameses II." "This is the first technical report on KV5. It covers much of the work undertaken between 1988 and 1999. Copiously illustrated, this study is a reference for understanding one of the most important discoveries ever made in the Theban Necropolis."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: Kent Weeks made international headlines when, seventy feet below the surface of Egypt's Valley of the Kings he found the largest and most complicated mausoleum yet discovered, the tomb of Ramesses II's sons. Now for the first time, Weeks shares up-to-the-minute details on the thrilling discoveryand contemplates what the tomb, called KV5, will reveal as the excavation moves forward. Built in the age of Exodus, the tomb could potentially transform ancient and biblical history. Its lower levels, possibly containing mummies of Ramesses II's sons, may shed new light on many of the mysteries of the Old Testament, including the story of Moses and the flight of the Israelites from Egypt. Weeks draws on his own diaries, as well as those of his wife and his foreman, to describe the excitement and risks that surround such a significant find. From floodwaters that threatened the opened tomb and the precarious craw spaces deep within it, to thieving tourists and scorpions, this adventure is not for the weak of heart. Photographs and sketches illustrate the crew's progress and the objects and decorations found in the tomb's chambers and hallways The resulta true-life, impossibly thrilling Raiders of the Lost Arkwill entrance readers from beginning to end.

Book excerpt: In February 2006 the astonishing discovery of a new tomb, KV-63, in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt sent ripples of surprise and excitement around the globe. KV-63 was the first tomb to be discovered in the Valley of the Kings in 84 years ~ since the discovery of Tutankhamen's tomb by Howard Carter. Currently, little has been written about the discovery of KV-63. Besides the official website, www.kv-63.com, there are only a scattering of magazine and online articles available. Now, for the first time the dramatic events are told first hand, making this the most comprehensive report to date on KV-63.
