Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia has one of the largest inventories of rock art in the world with pictographs and petroglyphs found almost anywhere that has suitable rock surfaces – in rock shelters and caves, on boulders and rock platforms. First Nations people have been marking these places with figurative imagery, abstract designs, stencils and prints for tens of thousands of years, often engaging with earlier rock markings. The art reflects and expresses changing experiences within landscapes over time, spirituality, history, law and lore, as well as relationships between individuals and groups of people, plants, animals, land and Ancestral Beings that are said to have created the world, including some rock art. Since the late 1700s, people arriving in Australia have been fascinated with the rock art they encountered, with detailed studies commencing in the late 1800s. Through the 1900s an impressive body of research on Australian rock art was undertaken, with dedicated academic study using archaeological methods employed since the late 1940s. Since then, Australian rock art has been researched from various perspectives, including that of Traditional Owners, custodians and other community members. Through the 1900s, there was also growing interest in Australian rock art from researchers across the globe, leading many to visit or migrate to Australia to undertake rock art research. In this volume, the varied histories of Australian rock art research from different parts of the country are explored not only in terms of key researchers, developments and changes over time, but also the crucial role of First Nations people themselves in investigations of this key component of their living heritage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the closely guarded and secretive military facility, Pine Gap in Australia's Northern Territory, police arrest six nonviolent activists. Their crime: to step through a fence, lamenting and praying for the dead of war. They call themselves Peace Pilgrims. The Crown calls them a threat to national security and demands gaol time. Their political trials, under harsh Cold War legislation, tell a story of obsessive Australian secrecy about the American military presence on our soil and the state's hardline response to dissent. In Peace Crimes, Alice Springs journalist Kieran Finnane gives a gripping account of what prompts the Pilgrims to risk so much, interweaving local events and their legal aftermath with this century's disturbing themes of international conflict and high-tech war. She asks, what responsibilities do we have as Australians for the covert military operations of Pine Gap and what are we going to do about them?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dr Shane Woods, a young archaeologist, is working on his first independent dig in Central Australia, when he finds among the remains of an ancient camp-fire a large bone upon which is engraved an unusual ritual scene of two figures standing arms outstretched, completely surrounded by a serpent in the shape of a sun-disk. Could this be evidence of a pre-historic belief system? Was this the earliest evidence of the "Dreaming", a time before time itself, when the divine Sky Spirits had created the earth and mankind? Next he discovers what he considers to be tangible evidence of aboriginal occupation, later dated over 500,000 years. This leads him to challenge the traditional " Out of Africa" hypothesis, with his own controversial viewpoint that modern man's origins are from the Australian Aborigines, who were a distinctly different species of Homo Sapiens, that had migrated along "Sacred Path's" during the Pleistocene period, coming "Out of Australia", across land bridges which had connected the supercontinent of Sahuland, consisting of Tasmania,Australia,New Guinea and the thousands of islands that are now part of the Indonesian and Philippine island chains. The enormity of his finds, make him realize that he needs a prestigious senior person to help him to confirm the authenticity of his discoveries,so he calls upon his old friend Dick Goldman, a Professor of Archaeology from UCLA. It is with his arrival to the Northern Territory, that this adventure into man's deepest past, begins its most unusual journey. This book traces the twists and turns of this journey, the near arrest of the archaeologists by the CIA and US military, for tresspassing on US controlled land in the heart of Aboriginal Australia, and the dismissal these highly controversial explanations and radical new views on the origins of modern man."
