Book excerpt: April 1994. A man sits alone in an attic extension on the cusp of becoming a Seattle suicide statistic. This man is no 'number and name' to be reported in a local newspaper. He is an icon, albeit a reluctant one. Kurt Cobain, the frontman of Nirvana, is about to pull the trigger of the gun in his hand and join the leagues of rock star deaths down the ages. Without invitation, Kurt has the curious company of a man purporting to be the Sex Pistols' Sid Vicious, Kurt's hero. Roy Smiles' witty and beautifully poignant new play explores exactly what it means to dice with death when being alive proves to be all too painful and peace seems elusive...

Book excerpt: Days six, seven and eight at Camp Walker. The comical side of camp life in the 1960s is featured, along with some new story developments. Julian Draws two portraits: Leonard, and then Mark. Julian and Mark's conferences continue. Julian feels empowered and undertakes a unique challenge: outfitting Nick and Tom's clandestine bedroom. He becomes their self-appointed secret guardian. Friday: The Scouts of Troop Nine have been in camp nearly a week. Their schedules and routines are well established. As in the previous two segments, Julian and Mark, remain our protagonists—but we take time to focus on a few secondary characters for a while. Some of these we have met in earlier scenes, others are in the spotlight for the first time. Friday begins in high spirits. The annual troop barbecue and songfest last night was a huge success, but it creates a wakeup surprise for some. Max's baked beans and Brad's onions have been fermenting overnight. Developments in the domestic life of the Flaming Arrow Patrol have stretched the limits of discretion. Nick and Tom have set up sleeping accommodations in the supply tent. Julian is fearful that Scoutmaster Mark will discover what is going on. By day's end, stability is assured. Introducing Kurt Davis, a member of the Zebra patrol. Circumstances bring him into Julian's circle of friends, Jeremy, Sid and Justin. He has a grudge against Tom that he can't talk about directly. Sid's snorkel comes in handy again. Kurt wants to learn how it works. He gives Sid his first canoe ride. Introducing Andy Ashbaugh and Tony Johnson. These two are close friends in Troop Nine that, unlike most, want to have more to do with Tom. Lots more. Geoff and Nick become friends; Nick gets a glimpse of the outside world. Saturday: The first week of camp comes to a close; activity and involvement is at the highest level. Few appreciate that camp is half over: only a week remains, many behave as if they have all summer. Julian feels empowered and secure because of his conference with Mark. He undertakes a unique domestic challenge. Danny revisits his plan to secure Julian's affection. Geoff selects Leonard as his special project. Ignoring the staff/scout boundary comes naturally. Introducing Freddy, an entrepreneur from another troop. He recruits Andy to join his unauthorized enterprise. The first week of camp ends with progress milestones for everyone in the leadership patrol. Danny gets a major promotion. Mark and Julian have evolved an aesthetic dimension in their relationship. Nick and Tom break in their new domicile. Sunday: Sunday is set aside at Camp Walker much like it is at home; it is set aside as a day of rest and reflection. Merit Badge and rank advancement classes are suspended. Relationships formed during the past week are in full swing however, and new ones will form during the final week of camp; conflicting interests arise as well, and unexpected tests of character are varied. Troop Nine has a banner day showing off. Scoutmaster Mark provides Danny his debut as a leader by assigning him to lead the troop in place of Tom, the Junior Assistant. Nick has asked Julian to stay in camp instead of attending the special service. He and Tom have a ceremony planned to thank him for his effort yesterday to secure mattresses for their bed. The scouts write letters home—several are shared with the reader. Geoff takes up a new quest—his greatest, most daring challenge yet. He becomes obsessed. Julian's drawing skills continue to advance and attract a wider audience. Mark's growing personal happiness is infectious; it feeds his enthusiasm for coaching water polo, and it makes him a magnetic figure in unplanned and unexpected ways. Circumstances force Kurt to confront Tom, who has to set things right. Justin and his private demon are explored. Mark is able to help.
Book Synopsis Sex Pistols: The Graphic Novel by : Jim McCarthy
Download or read book Sex Pistols: The Graphic Novel written by Jim McCarthy and published by Omnibus Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the creator of Godspeed: The Kurt Cobain Graphic and Eminem: In My Skin comes an explosive new graphic novel about the rise and fall of The Sex Pistols. Thanks to Steve Parkhouse’s wonderfully vivid illustrations and Jim McCarthy’s clever distillation of the script that rewrote rock ‘n’ roll and much else besides, the Pistols’ story returns to the rough and tumble of the comic strip from which it derived so much of its initial inspiration. England’s original punks explode from the pages with the same disrespect for authority that had the British establishment up in arms during the Queen’s 25th anniversary jubilee. And no one would have enjoyed this take on the Pistols more than the tale’s real casualty, Sid Vicious, who devoured comics almost as much as he did the destructive stuff.
Download or read book Love & Death written by Max Wallace and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2004-04-09 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stunning and groundbreaking investigation into the death of one of the great rock icons of our times -- revealing new evidence that points to a terrible conclusion. On Friday, April 8, 1994, a body was discovered in a room above a garage in Seattle. For the attending authorities, it was an open-and-shut case of suicide. What no one knew then, however, and which is only being revealed here for the very first time, is that the person found dead that day -- Kurt Cobain, the superstar frontman of Nirvana -- was murdered. In early April 1994, Cobain went missing for days, or so it seemed; in fact, some people knew where he was, and one of them was Courtney Love. Now a star in Hollywood and rock music, in early 1994 she was preparing to release her major label debut with her band, Hole, and what she knew then, though few others did, was that Cobain was planning to divorce her. Love & Death paints a critical portrait of Courtney Love; it also reveals for the first time the case tapes made by Love's own P.I., Tom Grant, a man on a mission to find the truth about Kurt Cobain's demise; and introduces us to a number of characters who feature in various theories about plots to kill Cobain. In addition, Cobain's grandfather goes public, charging that his grandson was murdered. Drawing on new forensic evidence and police reports obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, the book explodes the myths that have long convinced the world that Cobain took his own life, and reveals that the official scenario was scientifically impossible. Against a background of at least sixty-eight copycat suicides since 1994, award-winning investigative journalists Max Wallace and Ian Halperin have conducted a ten-year crusade for the truth, and in Love & Death they are finally able to present a chilling and convincing case that each and every one of these suicides was preventable -- and in doing so, they call for this case to be reopened and properly investigated.

Download or read book Disgraceland written by Jake Brennan and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular rock 'n' roll true crime podcast, Disgraceland comes an off-kilter, hysterical, at times macabre book inspired by true stories from the highly entertaining underbelly of music history. You may know Jerry Lee Lewis married his thirteen-year-old cousin but did you know he shot his bass player in the chest with a shotgun or that a couple of his wives died under extremely mysterious circumstances? Or that Sam Cooke was shot dead in a seedy motel after barging into the manager's office naked to attack her? Maybe not. Would it change your view of him if you knew that, or would your love for his music triumph? Real rock stars do truly insane thing and invite truly insane things to happen to them; murder, drug trafficking, rape, cannibalism and the occult. We allow this behavior. We are complicit because a rock star behaving badly is what's expected. It's baked into the cake. Deep down, way down, past all of our self-righteous notions of justice and right and wrong, when it comes down to it, we want our rock stars to be bad. We know the music industry is full of demons, ones that drove Elvis Presley, Phil Spector, Sid Vicious and that consumed the Norwegian Black Metal scene. We want to believe in the myths because they're so damn entertaining. Disgraceland is a collection of the best of these stories about some of the music world's most beloved stars and their crimes. It will mix all-new, untold stories with expanded stories from the first two seasons of the Disgraceland podcast. Using figures we already recognize, Disgraceland shines a light into the dark corners of their fame revealing the fine line that separates heroes and villains as well as the danger Americans seek out in their news cycles, tabloids, reality shows and soap operas. At the center of this collection of stories is the ever-fascinating music industry--a glittery stage populated by gangsters, drug dealers, pimps, groupies with violence, scandal and pure unadulterated rock 'n' roll entertainment.
Download or read book Straight Up written by Danny Dyer and published by Random House. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up in the eighties in East London was no picnic. Proper hard bastards, wannabe villains and cockney wide boys everywhere you went, all looking to make their mark. With trouble at home and more at school, Danny Dyer didn't have many options. He was a rascal, running with a tough crowd, getting himself into scrapes with the Old Bill, on the verge of becoming just another nobody. Until he started to act. It came naturally to him. He landed role after role, working with big stars, making a name for himself. And then came Human Traffic, and his career went into overdrive. Fame opened doors into the best clubs, the best booze and even better drugs. But with the highs came the lows, and as the drinks flowed, the work dried up. Shut out of an industry that didn't understand him, that heard his reputation before bothering with his talent, he had no choice but to turn it around and sort himself out. This is the real story - straight up. Funny, honest, full of swagger, and jammed full of antics and anecdotes, this memoir tears it up proper and delivers on every page.

Download or read book The Champions written by Eldot and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-01-31 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I like this place and could willingly waste my time in it.” - Celia, As You Like It, Act II scene iv Camp Walker is like the idyllic Forest of Arden—a place away, where the characters can focus on essential matters of the heart while they play. They discover who they are and what they need; they are enabled to return to the regular world with problems solved, lessons learned, and skills readied for facing the challenges of life. The Champions is the last part in the five book Scrapbook series. It explores the world through the eyes of a young gay boy. His needs and desires are looked at honestly, with a sense of humor—and without debilitating present day prejudice at the controls. Julian has established himself as a leader and gained the respect that he has sought for so long. He discovers that it is wise to go slowly. Unknown to him, his experienced competition stumbles in haste, and fails; he comes closer to achieving his original objective than either he—or Mark—realize. Surrounded by hundreds of scouts, all working to get ahead, Julian finds a way to shine. His artistic ability grows by leaps. His insight into human nature makes his friendship valuable and helpful to others. Story lines begun earlier are resolved, along with a few late developments. These last three days at camp are even more fun. The busload of boys returns home with much achieved; two weeks of hard work has been full of fun and discovery. Are there no “lived happily thereafter” endings in a gay boy’s coming of age story? Of course there are. They’re just kept secret. Otherwise, the happy part gets destroyed. That’s the way it is in real life. Real life stories carry baggage—questions about factual detail tend to upstage and distract the reader. Key story and thematic elements often get lost. If the story contains intimacies, scandalmongers cluster and buzz about like fruit flies, and the important issues get drowned out by the din. These negative forces have been pushed aside for this telling of the story. Julian’s Private Scrapbook employs the fiction writer’s toolkit in place of documentary literalness. “Charming and humorous, the novel successfully ends the series... told from a gay perspective, this is a wonderful look at boys transitioning between childhood and adulthood.” —BlueInk Review Troop Nine Victorious Six first places and the relay! Ten Honor Ribbons Best troop for the fourth year. • Julian makes a new lifelong friend. • Danny’s short water polo career ends well; on Friday he is discovered by Tony—instant electricity. • Tom and Nick help Freddy’s Shooting Gallery end with a special treat. • There is secret night action as well. On Thursday, Geoff appears at Mark’s cabin door just before midnight. On Friday, Tony arrives at Danny’s tent after lights out. • Friday is graduation. Tom organizes the last day competitions. Julian presents his oversize portraits to Leonard and Sarge. • Saturday: morning is the relay races, afternoon the awards, packing up to leave. During the last camp assembly, Leonard gets a special lesson in art appreciation from Geoff. The long ride home is busy... especially the hour after dark. • Julian’s goal for camp remains unachieved—or does it? What are the prospects for the future? What has happened at home?
Book Synopsis Strong Arm Tactics by : John Maxymuk
Download or read book Strong Arm Tactics written by John Maxymuk and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2007-11-30 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Signal caller, gunslinger, field general--the quarterback goes by many lofty nicknames. It's arguably the toughest, most high-pressure position to play among all sports. The quarterback touches the ball on every offensive snap, is responsible for reading the defense, adjusting the play, and executing complex schemes that require tremendous physical and mental prowess. He is expected to be the undisputed team leader, whether he's an established veteran or an untested rookie. If he succeeds, he's the most likely player on the field to be canonized by fans and broadcasters. If he fails, he'll be vilified in the press and his home field fans will start cheering for the backup. This book traces the interesting history of the professional quarterback, from the early years when the quarterback was a blocker (and the appellations quarterback, halfback, and fullback were literal and geographically correct) to the modern-day player who must be the eyes, ears, brains, and, of course, the accurate, strong arm of the offense. The narrative history in Section I is rich with statistical analysis. The author employs realistic metrics for statistical comparison across multiple eras, and includes all-time rankings as well as specific rankings among different styles of quarterbacks. Section II compares quarterbacks within their respective eras, putting their accomplishments in context with those of their contemporaries. Section III breaks down the quarterback position, team-by-team, for current NFL franchises. Appendices provide detailed passing records; additional statistics on everything from relative passer ratings to fourth quarter comebacks; and listings of first round draft picks, trades involving quarterbacks, awards, and uniform numbers.
Download or read book Kurt Vonnegut written by Kurt Vonnegut and published by Delacorte Press. This book was released on 2012-10-30 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Newsweek/The Daily Beast • The Huffington Post • Kansas City Star • Time Out New York • Kirkus Reviews This extraordinary collection of personal correspondence has all the hallmarks of Kurt Vonnegut’s fiction. Written over a sixty-year period, these letters, the vast majority of them never before published, are funny, moving, and full of the same uncanny wisdom that has endeared his work to readers worldwide. Included in this comprehensive volume: the letter a twenty-two-year-old Vonnegut wrote home immediately upon being freed from a German POW camp, recounting the ghastly firebombing of Dresden that would be the subject of his masterpiece Slaughterhouse-Five; wry dispatches from Vonnegut’s years as a struggling writer slowly finding an audience and then dealing with sudden international fame in middle age; righteously angry letters of protest to local school boards that tried to ban his work; intimate remembrances penned to high school classmates, fellow veterans, friends, and family; and letters of commiseration and encouragement to such contemporaries as Gail Godwin, Günter Grass, and Bernard Malamud. Vonnegut’s unmediated observations on science, art, and commerce prove to be just as inventive as any found in his novels—from a crackpot scheme for manufacturing “atomic” bow ties to a tongue-in-cheek proposal that publishers be allowed to trade authors like baseball players. (“Knopf, for example, might give John Updike’s contract to Simon and Schuster, and receive Joan Didion’s contract in return.”) Taken together, these letters add considerable depth to our understanding of this one-of-a-kind literary icon, in both his public and private lives. Each letter brims with the mordant humor and openhearted humanism upon which he built his legend. And virtually every page contains a quotable nugget that will make its way into the permanent Vonnegut lexicon. • On a job he had as a young man: “Hell is running an elevator throughout eternity in a building with only six floors.” • To a relative who calls him a “great literary figure”: “I am an American fad—of a slightly higher order than the hula hoop.” • To his daughter Nanny: “Most letters from a parent contain a parent’s own lost dreams disguised as good advice.” • To Norman Mailer: “I am cuter than you are.” Sometimes biting and ironical, sometimes achingly sweet, and always alive with the unique point of view that made him the true cultural heir to Mark Twain, these letters comprise the autobiography Kurt Vonnegut never wrote. Praise for Kurt Vonnegut: Letters “Splendidly assembled . . . familiar, funny, cranky . . . chronicling [Vonnegut’s] life in real time.”—Kurt Andersen, The New York Times Book Review “[This collection is] by turns hilarious, heartbreaking and mundane. . . . Vonnegut himself is a near-perfect example of the same flawed, wonderful humanity that he loved and despaired over his entire life.”—NPR “Congenial, whimsical and often insightful missives . . . one of [Vonnegut’s] very best.”—Newsday “These letters display all the hallmarks of Vonnegut’s fiction—smart, hilarious and heartbreaking.”—The New York Times Book Review

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Michael Jeremiah and his family are professing Christians fulfilling their life dreams. As good Bible students they know that: Some 2000 years ago, Jesus Christ was crucified, buried, and on the third day rose from the dead. He died with a mortal body and was resurrected with an immortal body. Over 500 persons witnessed Him in His resurrected form. After 40 days He gathered His Apostles, and gave orders for their mission on the earth. After He had spoken He was lifted up, as the Apostles watched, a cloud received Him out of their sight as he ascended into Heaven. Two angels standing beside the Apostles said, "This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into Heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into Heaven." Other scriptures tell us that some day He will return to the earth. But sometime prior to this, Christ will descend from Heaven with a shout and the trumpet of God to call all true Christians to be caught up in the clouds to meet Him in the air and be taken to Heaven. At the moment of this event, often called the Rapture, Michael and his family look forward to being changed from mortal to immortal bodies and to dwell with God in Heaven forever. THEIR LIVES ARE DISRUPTED by 9/11 and the War on Terror Michael Jeremiah, the Supreme Council and his family are thrust into positions of power in order to save the teetering United States from economic, social and moral collapse. Michael relies on his family ties, placing many of them in key leadership positions. Dr. Tandatina Allio, Michael's wife (a world renown brain surgeon), is his second in command. His father, Vice Admiral John is Director of NSA; his grandfather, Admiral Peter, is Director of Intelligence; his brother Thomas is Secretary General of the UN; and his sister Rebecca is Director of the Red Cross. All the while, Michael Jeremiah and his family move through life with the understanding that the Rapture is near. But, we are getting ahead of ourselves. Let's go back to the beginning of this story. AMERICA IS IN CRISIS. This was the newspaper headline. "America in Crisis". Polls show Americans are fearful of both the present and the future. There seems to be no hope. Americans want - demand that they be rescued, that our nation's many problems be solved. Rescued from what? Solve what problems? A respected panel published a white paper on the subject. They reported: "It is near the end of the George W. Bush administration. The country is being torn apart over the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. At least, at times, it appears to be President Bush's private war. He never asked Congress for a Declaration of War, nor asked the Nation to be directly involved, as it was during World War II. Our military's hands tied by politics. The Nation is in chaos with almost everyone demanding their rights, their freedom to do whatever they wish. Terrorists have attacked again in four cities: more than 30,000 killed. Vicious gangs and drug pushers demand their rights: our police are handcuffed. Purveyors of filth shout freedom of speech; pornography is called art; Christians and Jews are muzzled. Our founding fathers knew that everything has limits and boundaries. The Judeo-Christian ethic provided the moral foundation to go with our rights and freedoms and moral boundaries were set. But now, these moral boundaries are absent and freedoms are turning to license, edging closer and closer to anarchy. Our people do not feel safe sending their children to school, leaving their homes. Fear is everywhere; faith in government is near zero. The People pray for a man a superman a bold knight, to rescue them and the nation." MICHAEL JEREMIAH and the Supreme Council OFFER HOPE During times of crisis, l
