Dabei interessieren ihn folgende, zentrale Fragen: "Wie ging eigentlich diese Veränderung, diese 'Zivilisation' im Abendlande vor sich, worin bestand sie und welches waren ihre Antriebe, ihre Ursachen oder Motoren?" Im Folgenden soll der Frage nachgegangen werden, wie und warum die spezifisch deutsche Kulturauffassung vor sich ging und warum sich diese antithetisch zum französischen Zivilisationsbegriff verhielt. Dabei soll gezeigt werden, dass aus der ursprünglich sozialen innerdeutschen Antithese von Kultur und Zivilisation ein nationales deutsch-französisches Gegensatzpaar wird. Die Untersuchung möchte zunächst die Argumentationskette Elias' aufdecken, welche in einem zweiten Schritt verdeutlicht und interpretiert werden soll.

Dazu nimmt er eine Gegenüberstellung der Begriffe Zivilisation und Kultur mit jeweiligem Bezug auf Deutschland oder Frankreich vor. Dies soll der Verdeutlichung bestimmter typischer Figuren des Zivilisationsprozesses dienen. Im zweiten Kapitel findet sich eine große Anzahl von historischen Beispielreihen typischer französischer oder deutscher Verhaltensweisen der absolutistischen Zeit. Elias will damit verdeutlichen, dass die Entwicklung der Zivilisation allmählich voranging. Dies begründet er damit, dass auch in der so genannten zivilisierten Gesellschaft kein Menschenwesen zivilisiert auf die Welt kommt. Der individuelle Zivilisationsprozess, dem der Mensch zwangsläufig unterliegt, ist eine Funktion des gesellschaftlichen Zivilisationsprozess. Elias glaubt hier die Antwort auf die Frage, warum sich im Laufe ihrer Geschichte der Aufbau der abendländischen Gesellschaft kontinuierlich ändert, zu finden, was er besonders als These im zweiten Band thematisiert. Sie fand sich durch reale Daseinslagen vor neue Aufgaben gestellt, in der egalit11ren Massendemokratie durch neue Krafte bestimmt, durch Bildungsausweitung und Massenmedien in ih rer Gliederung verlindert, durch Intemationalisierungsvorglinge in ihrer Identitlit bedroht. Wo man im 19. lahrhundert glaubte, eine Kultur zu haben und zu sein, herrscht heute der Pluralismus, der sich allenfalls auf einige Spielregeln und Grundrechte einigen kann. Doch die Kultur verschwindet nicht, weil sich Gehalt und Gestalt wandeln. Sie bleibt selbst dann eine Macht, wenn sie sich, wie oft genug, nicht versammelt und artikuliert. Die Kulturintelligenz arbeitet auch dann weiter, wenn ihre Trager, Ideengeber und Netze undurchschaubar und anonym werden. Ideen und Symbole wirken auch dann, wenn sie in der Flut unterzugehen drohen. Selbst der Pluralis mus ist nicht bloB ein Zustand, sondern selbst eine mit eigenen Tabus und Geboten umgebene Ideologie, die im Kampf der Ideen durchgesetzt und legitimiert werden muBte.
