This goal arises from her dance experiences and the historical era of imperialism. Colonization occurs when those in power believe there is a need to dominate in a manner that subjugates people. Colonizers created colonies as they moved into territory because they felt there was a need to “civilize” the so-called savages of the land. Postcolonialism is an intellectual discourse that confronts the legacy of colonialism and attempts to de-colonize. With the legacy of colonialism and a postcolonial lens in mind, some research questions arise. How does she, as a Kuchipudi dancer, use Hindu dance to educate non-Hindus about the Eastern literature of Hinduism? For non-Hindus, she feels the power of the exoticizing gaze when she dances, which might very well block the educational intention of the dance. This exoticizing gaze prevents the understanding of the traditional nature of the dance and the introduction to Hinduism as a world religion. About the Author Born in Harda on the banks of the holy river Narmada and presently based at Indore, Narmada Prasad Upadhyaya is a noted scholar of Hindi literature and Indian painting. He writes with grace and eloquence and his books, 25 in number, are an important part of the bibliography of Hindi literature, Indian art and aesthetics. Among his books are Bhartiya Chitrankan Prampara, Paar Roop Ke, Jain Chitrankan Parampara, Kanheri Gita Govinda, The Concept of Portrait and The Colours Fragrance. He has extensively worked on Raghogargh and Jhalawad painting traditions. His special interest is in the paintings of central India including Malwa, Bundelkhand, Baghelkhand, Vidarbha and Khandesh. He has worked with the noted scholar Dr Vidhya Niwas Mishra on the projects of Ramayana and Gita Govinda. He has lectured in England, Australia and Switzerland, and has won several awards including the prestigious Kala Bhushan in 2003. In 2002 he was given the British Council fellowship and in 2008 a German fellowship for his projects on the painting traditions of central India. At present he is working on the interdisciplinary relationship between multiple dimensions of Indian paintings and the different disciplines of Indian literature. The visual heritage of the tradition is a subject of great interest to him. His current project is on the paintings of Bhaktamar, a Jaina composition. He is also working on a project of Gayer Anderson collection of Indian paintings preserved in Victoria and Albert Museum, London, Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, and other museums of the world. Harsha V. Dehejia has a double doctorate, one in medicine and other in ancient Indian culture, both from Mumbai University. He is also a member of the Royal College of Physicians of London, Glasgow and Canada all by examination. He is a practising Physician and Professor of Indian Studies at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. His main interest is in Indian aesthetics.

Lots of followers from the interior parts of Gujarat, Karnataka and Maharashtra participate in the yearly ‘Raas-Leela’ celebration. They come to worship Lord Shri Krishna, among them some thank the Lord for their fulfilled wishes, and others pray to God to fulfill their wishes. They have a feeling of love, affection and equality about all the religions in their hearts. They all are lost in themselves; their souls are connected to the Lord. They are so engrossed in singing ‘Bhajans’ that they forget hunger, thirst, etc. In this ‘Raas-Leela’ one local child enacts Shri Krishna and others enact as his ‘Gopis’. All night the followers sing ‘Bhajans’ under the ‘Chakra’. The ‘Padas’ of ‘Raas-Leela’ are sung by them. A total of 105 ‘Padaas’ are sung. They are composed in various ‘Raagas’- Traditional as well as the ‘Raagas’ which are scarcely known. We can easily make out that those ‘Raagas’ are different from the present ones. In this book, there is an humble effort to give the detailed information about the history of raas leela , the present situation of Raas-leela: a live description , Raas padaas with notation ( pt. Bhatkhande notation system ), actual meaning of each pada, a study of the raagas in which the padas are composed, and an effort to know the actual face or structure of the raagas in medieval period and in modern period.
