Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Savant Singh (1694–1764), the Rajput prince of Kishangarh-Rupnagar, is famous for commissioning beautiful works of miniature painting and composing devotional (bhakti) poetry to Krishna under the nom de plume Nagaridas. After his throne was usurped by his younger brother, while Savant Singh was on the road seeking military alliances to regain his kingdom, he composed an autobiographical pilgrimage account, “The Pilgrim’s Bliss” (Tirthananda); a hagiographic anthology, “Garland of Anecdotes about Songs” (Pad-Prasang-mala); and a reworking of the story of Rama, “Garland of Rama’s Story” (Ram-Carit-Mala). Through an examination of Savant Singh’s life and works, Heidi Pauwels explores the circulation of ideas and culture in the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries in north India, revealing how Singh mobilized soldiers but also used myths, songs, and stories about saints in order to cope with his personal and political crisis. Mobilizing Krishna’s World allows us a peek behind the dreamlike paintings and refined poetry to glimpse a world of intrigue involving political and religious reform movements.

Here are engaging and beautifully told tales of Krishna, Ram, and Sita, along with stories based on the Hindu epics the Ramayana and Mahabharata, as well as others of ancient origin with no known source. When Madhur Jaffrey was a young girl growing up in her grandfather’s house in Delhi, storytelling was an integral part of life. After dinner, she would huddle with her cousins and siblings around a seated aunt, grandmother, or mother and listen. This collection contains those enduring stories, each one introduced by a vivid childhood memory or humorous anecdote and arranged in the sequence in which they were told, in conjunction with religious festivals throughout the Hindu calendar year. From April to April, here is a year’s worth of tales, myths, and legends, a cycle of stories to read aloud, illustrated in full color with Michael Foreman’s sumptuous watercolor paintings. Also included is a “Who Is Who and What Is What” glossary and English pronunciation guide for curious young readers.

Book Synopsis devotion and divinity by : Gorti Visweswara Rao
Download or read book devotion and divinity written by Gorti Visweswara Rao and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2024-03-18 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is styled as a story-like narration, fusing two yugas – Treta and Dwapur yugas with an underlying theme of ‘Devotion and Divinity’. It is fashioned from an amusing thought in author’s mind that strongly urged him to fathom deep into the past and enjoy whatever it could grasp. Certainly, it worked and did find its own reflection in both the yugas. The result is profound! Hidden inside a vanara in Kishkindha, the mind could wander with devotion on Anjaneya. It could witness with bewilderment the unflinching faith of the mighty vanara towards the divine Sri Rama. In the form of a gopika, it could also cherish intimacy with the gopikas in Brindavan and relish their deep dedication and transcendental love towards the Divine Sri Krishna. Thus, behind this seemingly simple imaginative narration, the author subtly infuses sublime truths about the need to develop unegoistic and unselfish devotion on Divine Almighty to lead a purposeful life in this mortal world.

Download or read book Gita Govinda written by Jayadeva and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2017-12-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jayadeva’s Gitagovínda is a lyrical account of the illicit springtime love affair of Krishna and Radha, a god and goddess manifesting on earth as a cowherd and milkmaid for the sake of relishing the sweet miseries and rapturous delights of erotic love. The narrative framing their bucolic songs was composed under royal patronage in northeastern India in the twelfth century. It was to be performed for connoisseurs of poetry and the erotic arts, for aesthetes and voluptuaries who, while sensually engaged, were at the same time devoted to Krishna as Lord of the Universe. The text at once celebrates the vicissitudes of carnal love and the transports of religious devotion, merging and reconciling those realms of emotion and experience. Erotic and religious sensibilities serve, and are served by, the pleasures of poetry. In the centuries following its composition, the courtly text became a vastly popular inspirational hymnal. Jayadeva's songs continue to be sung throughout India in fervent devotional adoration of Krishna.
Download or read book Krishna's Song written by Steven J. Rosen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-09-30 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rosen offers Westerners an easy-to-read introduction to a sacred text, demystifying its considerable philosophy in a user-friendly way. This is not yet another translation, merely reiterating what the Gita itself has to say. It is rather an attempt to culturally translate the text, making use of concepts and categories to which Western readers are accustomed. By engaging familiar motifs—such as issues of modernity, pop-culture icons, and well-known philosophers in the West—the author brings the Gita into focus for non-specialists and scholars alike. Through a series of contemporary news references and insightful summaries, readers will finally understand the facts and personalities that make up the Bhagavad Gita. Using his many years of Gita-centered research, Rosen unlocks the mysteries of the text's spiritual underpinnings. He provides an overview of the Gita's narrative and teachings alongside documentation of its traditional application and more modern ways in which the text can be understood. Students and scholars alike will rejoice in how well this book lays bare the culture and the context of the Gita, resulting in a reader's deep familiarity with this most sacred of all the world's wisdom texts.
Book Synopsis Krishna’s Kiss by : Varalotti Rengasamy
Download or read book Krishna’s Kiss written by Varalotti Rengasamy and published by Pustaka Digital Media. This book was released on 2021-02-21 with total page 784 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great Lord, the Flautist, Krishna has come down to kiss us. We cover our cheeks with our hands. We do not want His kiss. We want something else - an I-phone, a larger house, promotion, pay hike -oh it's a long list. Lord Krishna gave Bhagavad Gita to us only to prepare us for His kiss. The kind Lord almost whispered Bhagavad Gita in your ears. Why? Only to remove your hands from your cheeks. So that He can kiss you with His beautiful lips. I beg of you dears, please, remove your hands. Once you taste His kiss everything else in the world will be insipid. And that kiss can even transform an ugly frog into a handsome prince. But once you taste that kiss you will never want to become a prince. You will rather be a frog living in filth, waiting for that kiss for all eternity The name Bhagavad Gita has been translated as "The Divine Song." Or "The Song Celestial." Or as “The Song of Love" Personally I will prefer to translate it as “Krishna's Kiss." Can you think of something better? "This is not a religious book; but a book that will usher in a new religion, a religion of love." - Lalitha Shivaguru, Reviewer

Download or read book Crowd Control written by David Marx and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-04-30 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I wrote "Crowd Control" during my senior year at P.S.U. Most was written in my dorm room at P.S.U., but also at Greg and Elenor's apartment. "Crowd Control" is the third book of a four book set of books. Sad to say I was in an eastern religion phase back then. The religion tends to threaten to swamp the poems and pages and does not really resolve itself until Book Four, "The Salvation Shuffle". Now, in 2011, I am about through with these works finally. Originally the poetry was not punctuated, that only added later on. I stopped writing like this about 30 years ago, now doing only prose.
