Book Synopsis The Labour Movement in Britain from Thatcher to Blair by : Keith Barlow
Download or read book The Labour Movement in Britain from Thatcher to Blair written by Keith Barlow and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British economic and industrial policy since 1979 is examined using a wide range of sources. Was this really «new», revival of earlier approaches or a rigorous extension of the IMF-imposed policies on the 1974-79 Labour Government? The question is asked: Was the creation of a large pool of unemployed labour necessary for reshaping the economy or was the aim to secure fundamental changes in the relations between capital and organised labour? Due to setbacks suffered by trade unions in the 1980s with factory closures and major job losses, the author questions Labour's motives in softening any meaningful opposition to the Conservatives, supporting ERM in 1990, reducing the role of trade unions in the Party itself and retaining key policies of the Thatcher era especially its trade union laws.

Book Synopsis "Brexit" as a Social and Political Crisis by : Franco Zappettini
Download or read book "Brexit" as a Social and Political Crisis written by Franco Zappettini and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-12 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a focus on media and political discourses both before and after the UK 2016 EU Referendum, this volume provides a set of comprehensive, empirically based analyses of Brexit as a social and political crisis. The book explores a variety of context-dependent, ideologically driven, social, political, and economic imaginaries that have been attached to the idea/concept of Brexit in the UK and internationally. The volume’s wider contribution has three dimensions. First, it provides evidence of how the Brexit referendum debate and its immediate reactions were discursively framed and made sense of by a variety of social and political actors and through different media. Second, the contributors show how such discourses were reflexive of the wider path-dependent historical and political processes which have been instrumental in pre-defining the key pathways along which Brexit has been articulated. Third, the book identifies key patterns of national and international framing in order to discover the key, recurrent discursive trajectories in the ongoing process of Brexit – including after UK’s formal departure from the EU in January 2020 – while putting forward an agenda for its further, in depth and systematic analysis in, in particular, politics and the media. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Critical Discourse Studies.
Book Synopsis German Migrants in Post-War Britain by : Dr Inge Weber-Newth
Download or read book German Migrants in Post-War Britain written by Dr Inge Weber-Newth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-03-29 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both timely and topical, with 2005 marking the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, this unique book examines the little-known and under-researched area of German migration to Britain in the immediate post-war era. Authors Weber-Newth and Steinert analyze the political framework of post-war immigration and immigrant policy, and the complex decision-making processes that led to large-scale labour migration from the continent. They consider: * identity, perception of self and others, stereotypes and prejudice * how migrants dealt with language and intercultural issues * migrants' attitudes towards national socialist and contemporary Germany * migrants' motivation for leaving Germany * migrants' initial experiences and their reception in Britain after the war, as recalled after 50 years in the host country, compared to their original expectations. Based on rich British and German governmental and non-governmental archive sources, contemporary newspaper articles and nearly eighty biographically–oriented interviews with German migrants, this outstanding volume, a must-read for students and scholars in the fields of social history, sociology and migration studies, expertly encompasses political as well as social-historical questions and engages with the social, economic and cultural situation of German immigrants to Britain from a life-historical perspective.

Book Synopsis The Future of Brexit Britain by : JONATHAN CHAPLIN & ANDREW BRADSTOCK
Download or read book The Future of Brexit Britain written by JONATHAN CHAPLIN & ANDREW BRADSTOCK and published by SPCK. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traumatic debates provoked by the EU referendum have subjected the idea of British identity to relentless and painful interrogation. How might Britain as a multinational state understand its own defining moral and political commitments in relation to its European neighbours? If, as many suggest, a resurgence of English nationhood has been the driving force behind Brexit, how might the Church of England, as the ‘national Church’ in England, and its neighbouring Anglican Churches, respond to this and the many other missional challenges they face? Those of us still wondering what to make of Brexit – including reflective Christians, politicians, journalists, think-tanks and religious leaders – will find much to stimulate thought and discussion here. The contributors have a wealth of specialist knowledge of the churches, Brexit and the EU; they draw on this and the legacies of Anglican – and more broadly Christian – social and political theology to offer their rich and nuanced responses to a range of crucial questions. ‘Seeks to challenge Christians of all views to imagine a future with hope.’ Dr Anna Rowlands

Book Synopsis The British and German Worlds in an Age of Divergence (1600–1850) by : Niels Grüne
Download or read book The British and German Worlds in an Age of Divergence (1600–1850) written by Niels Grüne and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-22 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of whether Britain is "apart from or a part of Europe" (D. Abulafia) has gained significance in recent years. This book reassesses an underexplored field of early modern transnational history: the variety of ways in which connections between Britain and German-speaking Europe shaped developments. After a comprehensive introduction, this book is divided into three parts: cross-border transfers and appropriations of knowledge; coping with alterity in intergovernmental contacts; and ideologising the cultural nation. The topics range from the exchange of religious and political ideas over court life, diplomacy, and espionage to literary and philosophical debates. Particular attention is paid to the media processes involved and to the practical value of knowledge about the "other" in different historical contexts. The picture emerging from the case studies reveals an intriguing dynamic: Mutual interest and ambiguous entanglements deepened precisely at a time when the British and German worlds diverged evermore from each other in terms of social and political structures. This fascinating volume sheds new light on Anglo-German relations and will be essential reading for students of early modern European history.
