Book excerpt: No previous work on wayang has treated in depth what is the focus of this book: the power of the theatrical medium, the actuality of the performance as a physical, emotional, and social experience and event, and the sensations and feelings involved in performing and watching an all-night wayang performance. A single puppeteer moves puppets, delicately carved and painted according to a complex iconography, in dance-like patterns integrated with continuous music, which he also directs; he speaks the voices of all characters; and he represents beings and a mythological world that reflect (on) the human world, including the specific occasion and the people present. Paying attention to the wholeness of the 'multimedia' performance as an event, as well as to the sensations, subtle movements, and particular intonations of the performance, the author of this book bases his 'thick description' on years of learning to perform wayang, attending and participating in performances, interviews and discussions with people involved with wayang, supplemented by study of texts, from old manuscripts and performance manuals to newspaper articles and reports on performances. He shows the need not to be limited to any single discipline: in wayang, the relationships and interaction, for example, between visual movements and music, or between actions on the screen and actions among the audience-participants, are no less significant than, for example, the relationships within music. The book includes the most extensive discussion of recent changes in wayang theatre, its interaction with various traditional and modern entertainments, and the ways it is affected by politics and economy. A postscript focuses on the post-Soeharto era. The book is a contribution to the study of Indonesian performing arts and culture, but it is also intended for anyone interested in theatre and performing arts generally. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: Dutch colonial presentations at the world exhibitions in the period 1880-1931 served to legitimize the Dutch imperialist project and highlight the problem of Dutch identity and the Netherlands' place in the world. At these exhibitions, the Netherlands showed off its colonies by erecting models of schools, sugar-factories, bridges, and railways exhibits, which were meant to give proof of the good works of modern colonial administration and enterprise. Not only were there displays of ethnographic objects, life-size temples and villages inhabited by authentic Javanese and Sumatrans were brought to Europe specifically for these expositions. Their presence took the viewer into an "Other" world that provided an "immediacy" for visitors to the exhibition. While these colonial spectacles helped legitimize Dutch imperialism project, they also provided lenses for understanding the colonial world as it was constructed according to the prevailing evolutionist worldview at the time.

Book excerpt: This book explores the notion of the human psyche (‘soul’) and its continuing usefulness in the background of the ongoing and always accelerating techno-scientific revolution. The main argument here follows the assumption that this revolution, while not necessarily being a threat to humankind, is often blind or ignorant as to its subject, the ‘human being’. In the first chapters, the reader is invited to reflect on the notion of ‘thinking’ as a phenomenon of consciousness that transcends merely ‘having thoughts’. Relating thinking to consciousness requires reconsidering the phenomena of ‘inspiration’ and ‘ecstasy’. Provided that such a thing as ‘inspiration’ exists, it makes sense to revise the solipsist or substantialist account often given of the human mind. The book defines inspiration as a ‘clairvoyance of one’s psyche’, and ecstasy as the experience of this clairvoyance. Next, a case is made for synchronicity experiences as a key to a better understanding of the human psyche. While being enigmatic all throughout, synchronicity experiences, both on the individual and on the collective level, help overcome both subject/object and body/mind dualisms. It is not likely, though, that the solution they could offer will be readily accepted by (what is called) ‘science’ today, since it challenges one of the latter’s basic premises, ‘causality’. As a more concrete example of a condensed synchronicity experience, the author dwells on ‘physiognomy’. In the final chapter, death and suffering are discussed as extreme, and therefore relevant, experiences of consciousness. The book interprets death in terms of ‘enhanced subliminality’, and ‘suffering’ as unconscious resistance against maturing. Generally, this book explores a psycho-philosophical tradition, rooted in Romantic thinking (from Schelling and Schopenhauer until Klages and Jung), which has hitherto been unjustly neglected, if not repressed, by mainstream materialism and positivism. It makes a strong case for an intellectual account of the soul.

Magnetic sleep revealed a realm of mental activity that was not available to the conscious mind but could affect conscious thought and action. Psychotherapist Crabtree (Centre for Training in Psychotherapy, Toronto) tells the story of the discovery of magnetic sleep and its relationship to psychotherapy. Meister is German for "Master", referring to the academic title Magister in theologia he obtained in Paris. Coming into prominence during the Avignon Papacy and a time of increased tensions between the Franciscans and Eckhart's Dominican Order of Friars Preachers, he was brought up on charges later in life before the local Franciscan-led Inquisition.

Book excerpt: Ai represent a new mythology called Pink Tsunami, which describes how the world came to total destruction. Typically, symbols have the form of words, sounds, and ideas. This story, shown only with visual images, represents a number of different meanings and ideas. In this way the story brings personal images and stories to the reader based on their experience and environment, giving them more room to read in a different way. Mythology was traditionally transferred by the oral tradition on a small scale. During this process, the story was modified, arranged, simplified and details were added. I have tried to reproduce the same process of mythology all on my own by drawing images in different styles and materials over and over again.
