Book excerpt: When Aidoneus, god of the underworld, lost Persephone, he lost everything. He fled to the mortal world, where he's buried himself in his work. Nothing else could distract him from the pain...until his company hires a new accountant. Kora is brilliant with numbers and undeniably attractive. But there's more to her than that. She makes Aidoneus feel again, makes his powers act up in ways they haven't in years. And his family is suspicious: could Kora be a Titan, the age-old enemy of the Greek gods? The very same people responsible for Persephone's death? Aidoneus and his family aren't the only ones interested in Kora: the Watchers, ancient guardians of Olympus, have been waiting. And now, they're preparing for war. Kora must choose between the friends she trusts and the man she loves. And Aidoneus must choose between the only family he's ever known and the woman who feels like home. The right choice could bring peace to their world–if they have the strength to make it. The Scarlet Romance is a full-length paranormal romance featuring Olympians, Greek gods, unbelievable fight scenes, and a fated romance that will leave you spellbound.

Some are born privileged while others are born in situations of extreme disadvantage. No one has a choice regarding how you start life. However, at some point, you have a choice of how you live and ultimately what you die living for. Here you find three people whose lives never intersect while alive, but all find themselves experiencing a common event. An event that literally defines their destiny. Everyone has individual struggles and challenges in his/her life. Each person has a mission to overcome in his/her personal situation so he may become empowered to a greater understanding of why they are here. The first person is Kora who is a black woman born into slavery in the mid-1700s. She suffers abuse in all forms from her slave owners and alike. The harsh treatment ultimately leads to her death, but not before she found salvation. Next, we are introduced to Jacob. He was born during the 1970s and is the son of a prominent mafia figure. Jacob is drawn into this dark underworld lifestyle while struggling to find his place between the world of violence he knows, and the love he finds in a woman named Crystal. They both meet a tragic death during the course of his struggle. Lastly, there's Terry. He's a computer genius and a spiritual man. He is also a man who has multiple demons he is dealing with. Aside from a weight issue, his alternative lifestyle has introduced him to a number of complications in his life. Disease, guilt, and depression eventually dominate his life, negating his professional accomplishments. Kora, Jacob, and Terry later experience the rapture simultaneously, from different vantage points, yielding different realities for each. Although neither knew each other, they see one another during the event as their destinies are revealed to all. Immediately after the rapture, the forces of evil gather for their assault on what's left of humanity.

Book excerpt: The present work contains a brief study of the various facets of Mithila folk-arts and paintings, which are unique in character having few parallels. Of late there has been great talk about this painting, the central inspiration of which revolves round popular religious themes and natural surroundings. They reflect the self-control and serenity of Maithila life and the definite theocratic and aristocratic organizations of Maithila society. The women painters of Mithila aimed at giving clear and edifying expression to certain intuitions, which formed part of their religion. The different forms of floor-drawings (Aripana) and walk-paintings (bhitti-citra) provide information on customs and costumes and rituals and religion which otherwise may remain unnoticed. The volume further explains in detail the religious and spiritual significance of the folk-arts and paintings of Mithila by means of copious references to Sanskrit texts, both sacred and secular. The paintings, as they are, constitute not merely a heap of drawings but a visible symbol of aspirations of pious ladies, and the throbbings of their hearts in religious fervour. A work of inestimable interest both for the specialist and for the connisseur interested in the study of Indian paintings, this comprehensive and authoritative volume on Madhubani painting and other folk-arts of Mithila will prove of immense help to students of Indian culture.

The accidental finding, by Firl and his friends, of an alien digging on one of the Federation settlements, led to the discovery of altered human genetic material in a number of people visiting the site. Soon Federation is torn apart by political and personal turmoil caused by the friction arising between the affected and the non-affected. The affected split to form the Elites, eager to find out about their alien heritage; and the Morphiks, keen to embark on their own evolution. Eventually Federation breaks up and in its place three separate empires form, populated by the three races.

Book excerpt: The Bird's Head Peninsula of New Guinea covers some 30,000 square kilometres of enormously varied landscape. Although it is home to an indigenous population of just 114,000, these people share more than twenty languages. Wider knowledge of the peninsula was recently gained through an extensive interdisciplinary research project (ISIR) involving anthropologists, archaeologists, botanists, demographers, geologists, linguists, and specialists in public administration. In analysing the findings of the project, this book provides a systematic comparison with earlier studies, addressing the geological past, the latest archaeological evidence of early human habitation (dating back at least 26,000 years), and the region s diversity of languages and cultures. The peninsula is an important transitional area between Southeast Asia and Oceania, and this book provides valuable new insights for specialists in both the social and natural sciences into processes of state formation and globalization in the Asia Pacific zone. Jelle Miedema studied sociology and anthropology at Groningen University. Awarded his PhD at Nijmegen University, he became coordinator of the ISIR project at Leiden University. His research topics include ethnohistory, kinship, and religion.

Book excerpt: When Alain Adair dies, it is a brutal death for a brutal man. The townsfolk know who killed him, but they dont know how. They suspect magic, though no one has the courage to speak the words aloud. Alains young wife, Kora, murdered her husband, although she has no idea how she did so. Suspected of using magic, she flees and seeks refuge in an ancient forest. Unconscious, feverish, and at the threshold of death, her life takes a strange turn; when she wakes she is tethered to Draeon, a rebellious dragon prince. Kora struggles to understand who and what she is while surrounded by creatures known as Fae in a world filled with magic. She and Draeon become intertwined with the nefarious goals of an over-ambitious dragon, Fedelmid, who seeks to gain power at the sacrifice of all. With an aging dragon historian, two elves, and two dwarves, Kora and Draeon become the unlikely chosen people to venture to the human world to ensure the scheming, power-hungry Fedelmid faces justice. The fate of the Fae, as well as the human race, depends upon their success in stopping him. Their bond and its physical limitations could prove to be an overwhelming challenge to accomplishing this goal.

This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marie-Galante is a small island situated in the Caribbean to the south of Guadeloupe. The majority of Marie-Galantais are descendants of the slave era, though a few French settlers also occupy the island. Along with its neighbours Guadeloupe and Martinique, Marie-Galante forms an official d?rtement of France. Marie-Galante historically has never been an independent polity. Marie-Galantais express sentiments of being 'deux fois colonis? or twice colonized, concomitant with their sense of insularity from a global organization of place. Dr Ron Emoff translates this pervasive sense of displacement into the concept of the 'non-nation'. Musical practices on the island provide Marie-Galantais with a means of re-connecting with other significant distant places. Many Marie-Galantais display a 'split-subjectivity', embracing an African heritage, a French association and a Caribbean regionalism. This book is unique, in part, with regard to its treatment of a particular mode of self-consciousness, expressed musically, on a virtually forgotten Caribbean island. The book also combines literary, narrative, historical and musical sources to theorize a postcolonial subsurreal in the French Antilles. The focus of the book is upon kadril dance and gwo ka drumming, two prevalent musical practices on the island with which Marie-Galantais construct unique perceptions of self in relation, specifically, to Africa and France. Based on several extended periods of ethnographic research, the book evokes unique Marie-Galantais views on tradition, historicity, esclavage, nationalism (and its absence) and the local significance of occupying a globally out-of-the-way place. The book will be of interest not only to ethnomusicologists, but also to those interested in cultural and linguistic anthropology, postcolonial studies, performance studies, folklore and Caribbean studies.

Book excerpt: Serafina, Neela, Ling, Ava, Becca, and Astrid, six mermaids from realms scattered throughout the seas and freshwaters, were summoned by the leader of the river witches to learn an incredible truth: the mermaids are direct descendants of the Six Who Ruled—powerful mages who once governed the lost empire of Atlantis. The ancient evil that destroyed Atlantis is stirring again, and only the mermaids can defeat it. To do so, they need to find magical talismans that belonged to the Six. Serafina believes her talisman was buried with an old shipwreck. While researching its location, she is almost discovered by a death rider patrol led by someone familiar. . . . The pain of seeing him turned traitor is devastating. Neela travels to Matali to warn her parents of the grave threat facing their world. But they find her story outlandish; a sign that she needs to be confined to her chamber for rest and recovery. She escapes and travels to Kandina, where her talisman is in the possession of fearsome razormouth dragons. As they hunt for their talismans, both Serafina and Neela find reserves of courage and cunning they didn't know they possessed. They face down danger and death, only to endure a game-changing betrayal, as shocking as a rogue wave.
