So versucht man es ihnen an Hand von Methoden- oder Arbeitsfeldbeispielen zu erklären. Oft genannte Beispiele sind in diesem Zusammenhang die Arbeit beim Jugendamt, der Familienhilfe, die Arbeit mit Suchtmittelabhängigen oder Streetwork. Allgemein kann man auch sagen, dass es um die Unterstützung von Personen geht, die aufgrund unterschiedlicher Problematiken Hilfe benötigen, um ihr Leben unter Rückgriff auf die eigenen Potenziale, wieder in geregelte Bahnen zu lenken. So lässt sich Soziale Arbeit kurz und knapp umschreiben. Aber was ist dann Betriebliche Sozialarbeit? Wenn man überhaupt eine Antwort auf diese Frage erhält, so lautet diese häufig: Ach, Betriebliche Sozialarbeit, das ist doch Suchtberatung!?! Aber, Streetwork, so was gibt es doch nicht in einem Unternehmen! Streetwork vielleicht nicht, aber ist Betriebliche Sozialarbeit wirklich nur Suchtberatung? Gibt es nicht vielleicht viel mehr Aufgaben- und Arbeitsfelder, mit denen sich Sozialarbeiter in einem Unternehmen beschäftigen? Immerhin lässt sich Soziale Arbeit auch nicht auf die wenigen oben genannten Beispiele reduzieren. Welche Methoden und Arbeitsfelder aus der klassischen Sozialen Arbeit lassen sich in einen Betrieb übertragen und welche Aufgaben können sich aus dem Fachwissen und der Professionalität eines betrieblichen Sozialarbeiters heraus noch ergeben? Within those changes, reforms do not go ‘as planned’ but, as is always the case with processes of rationali- tion, have a series of unintended effects. At the same time it becomes incre- ingly clear who in this process are the winners and who are the losers, although this is still subject to fluctuation and change. This can be illustrated by two - amples from current events: Where the range of taught courses is concerned, as part of the Bologna Process the new structuring of student study paths and their organisation is aimed at unifying the European area of science to ensure a study that is equally permissive and efficient. However, it is to be deplored that the mobility of s- dents has become more restricted because of an increasing specialisation in the available study paths. Also, bachelor degrees do not meet with the anticipated high response from the labour market in all countries, so that the master’s degree is becoming more or less a ‘must’, while at the same time the number of study places on master’s courses is limited. Instead of the intended reduction in the duration of study time in comparison to the previous German ‘Magister’ and ‘Diplom’, rather a prolongation in the duration of studies has been recorded.

Book excerpt: A central pillar of contemporary communication research is the analysis of filmed interactions between people. The techniques employed in such analysis first took on a recognizably modern form in the 1970s, but their roots go back to the earliest days of motion picture technology in the late nineteenth century. This book presents original essays accompanied by written responses which together create a dialogue exploring early efforts at audio-visual sequence analysis and their common goal to capture the "whole" of the communicative situation. The first three chapters of this volume look at the film-based research of Gestalt psychologists in Berlin as well as psychologists in the orbit of Karl and Charlotte Bühler in Vienna in the first decades of the twentieth century. Most of these figures – along with many other Central European scholars of this era – were driven into exile in the United States after the rise of National Socialism in the 1930s. This scientific migration led to the cross-pollination of communication studies in America, an outcome visible in the leading project in interaction research of the mid-twentieth century, the Natural History of an Interview. The following two chapters examine this project in its historical context. The volume closes with a critical edition of a treasure from the archives: the transcript of a speech delivered by Ray Birdwhistell, a key participant in the Natural History of an Interview project and founder of kinesics.

The debate over "woman's place" in the fifties was part of West Germany's confrontation with the ideological legacy of National Socialism. The term became more prominent only after World War II. Kaufmann, the doyen of the sociology of social policy in Germany, argues that „social policy“ responds to the modern disjunction between “state” and “society” diagnosed by the German philosopher Hegel. Hegel’s disciple Lorenz von Stein saw social policy as a means to pacify the capitalist class conflict. After World War II, social policy expanded in an unprecedented way, changing its character in the process. Social policy turned from class politics into a policy for the whole population, with new concepts – like "social security", "redistribution" and "quality of life" - and new overarching formulas, "social market economy" and "social state" (the German version of “welfare state”). Both formulas have remained indeterminate and contested, indicating the inherent openness of the idea of the “social”.

The volume shows how development practitioners and westernized elites/intellectuals are often complicit in this neo-colonial knowledge production. Noble gestures such as giving foreign aid or promoting participation and democracy frequently mask their institutional biases and economic and geopolitical interests, while silencing the subaltern (marginalized groups), on whose behalf they purportedly work. In response, the book argues for a radical ethical and political self-reflexivity that is vigilant to our reproduction of neo-colonialisms and amenable to public contestation of development priorities. It also underlines subaltern political strategies that can (and do) lead to greater democratic dialogue.
