Book Synopsis Music & the British Military in the Long Nineteenth Century by : Trevor Herbert
Download or read book Music & the British Military in the Long Nineteenth Century written by Trevor Herbert and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-05 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although military music was among the most widespread forms of music making during the nineteenth-century, it has been almost totally overlooked by music historians. Music & the British Military in the Long Nineteenth Century however, shows that military bands reached far beyond the official ceremonial duties they are often primarily associated with and had a significant impact on wider spheres of musical and cultural life. Beginning with a discussion of the place of the military in civilian and social life, authors Trevor Herbert and Helen Barlow plot the story of military music from its sponsorship by military officers to its role as an expression of imperial force, which it took on by the end of the nineteenth century. Herbert and Barlow organize their study around three themes: the use of military status to extend musical patronage by the officer class; the influence of the military on the civilian music establishments; and an incremental movement towards central control of military music making by governments throughout the world. In so doing, they show that military music impacted everything from the configuration of the music profession in the major metropolitan centers, to the development of wind instruments throughout the century, to the emergence of organized amateur music making. A much needed addition to the scholarship on nineteenth century music, Music & the British Military in the Long Nineteenth Century is an essential reference for music, cultural and military historians, the social history of music and nineteenth century studies.

In his series The Symphonic Repertoire, the late A. Peter Brown explored the symphony in Europe from its origins into the 20th century. In Volume V, Brown's former students and colleagues continue his vision by turning to the symphony in the Western Hemisphere. It examines the work of numerous symphonists active from the early 1800s to the present day and the unique challenges they faced in contributing to the European symphonic tradition. The research adds to an unmatched compendium of knowledge for the student, teacher, performer, and sophisticated amateur. This much-anticipated fifth volume of The Symphonic Repertoire: The Symphony in the Americas offers a user-friendly, comprehensive history of the symphony genre in the United States and Latin America.

Book Synopsis Zur Geschichte und Aufführungspraxis der Harmoniemusik by : Boje Schmuhl
Download or read book Zur Geschichte und Aufführungspraxis der Harmoniemusik written by Boje Schmuhl and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Brass Bands of the World: Militarism, Colonial Legacies, and Local Music Making by : Suzel Ana Reily
Download or read book Brass Bands of the World: Militarism, Colonial Legacies, and Local Music Making written by Suzel Ana Reily and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bands structured around western wind instruments are among the most widespread instrumental ensembles in the world. Although these ensembles draw upon European military traditions that spread globally through colonialism, militarism and missionary work, local musicians have adapted the brass band prototype to their home settings, and today these ensembles are found in religious processions and funerals, military manoeuvres and parades, and popular music genres throughout the world. Based on their expertise in ethnographic and archival research, the contributors to this volume present a series of essays that examine wind band cultures from a range of disciplinary perspectives, allowing for a comparison of band cultures across geographic and historical fields. The themes addressed encompass the military heritage of band cultures; local appropriations of the military prototype; links between bands and their local communities; the spheres of local band activities and the modes of sociability within them; and the role of bands in trajectories toward professional musicianship. This book will appeal to readers with an interest in ethnomusicology, colonial and post-colonial studies, community music practices, as well as anyone who has played with or listened to their local band.

Book Synopsis Music in the British Provinces, 1690-1914 by : Rachel Cowgill
Download or read book Music in the British Provinces, 1690-1914 written by Rachel Cowgill and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period 1700-1900, roughly from Purcell to Elgar, has traditionally been seen as a dark age in British musical history, while research into British music of the period has tended to concentrate on London. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that by 1750 Britain had a highly distinctive musical culture, in terms of its reach, the way it was organised, and its size, richness and quality. This is the first book to concentrate specifically on musical life in the provinces, bringing together new archival research and offering a fresh perspective on British music of the period.
