Book Synopsis Explaining the Low Intensity of Ethnopolitical Conflict in Ukraine by : Susan Stewart
Download or read book Explaining the Low Intensity of Ethnopolitical Conflict in Ukraine written by Susan Stewart and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2005 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzes the reasons for the relative lack of ethnopolitical conflict in Ukraine after 1989. Starting from the assumption that such conflict would have required higher levels of ethnic group mobilization, the book utilizes a multifactor model to explain why such mobilization remained extremely low in most cases. It reaches the conclusion that the interplay of historical and international factors was in large part responsible for the low mobilization levels.

This book was released on 2016-04-02 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. In many contexts the attribute "catholic" is misunderstood as a confessional term describing one specific church. The papers of the 18th Academic Consultation of Societas Oecumenica presented in this book give insights to the ecumenical significance of the "catholicity", which all churches confess in the Creed. They also take into consideration the tensions between unity and diversity as well as the challenges by new developments in worldwide Christianity.
Book Synopsis Routledge Handbook of Environmental Conflict and Peacebuilding by : Ashok Swain
Download or read book Routledge Handbook of Environmental Conflict and Peacebuilding written by Ashok Swain and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past two decades have witnessed the emergence of a large body of research examining the linkage between environmental scarcity, violent conflict, and cooperation. However, this environmental security polemic is still trying to deliver a well-defined approach to achieving peace. Studies are being undertaken to find the precise pathways by which cooperative actions are expected not only to pre-empt or moderate resource conflicts but also to help diffuse cooperative behaviour to other disputed issues. The recognition that environmental resources can contribute to violent conflict accentuates their potential significance as pathways for cooperation and the consolidation of peace in post-conflict societies. Conceived as a single and reliable reference source which will be a vital resource for students, researchers, and policy makers alike, the Routledge Handbook of Environmental Conflict and Peacebuilding presents a wide range of chapters written by key thinkers in the field, organised into four key parts: Part I: Review of the concept and theories; Part II: Review of thematic approaches (resources, scarcity, intervention, adaptation, and peacebuilding); Part III: Case studies (Middle East, Iraq, Jordan, Liberia, Nepal, Colombia, Philippines); Part IV: Analytical challenges and future-oriented perspectives. Enabling the reader to find a concise expert review on topics that are most likely to arise in the course of conducting research or policy making, this volume presents a truly global overview of the key issues and debates in environmental conflict and peacebuilding.

Book Synopsis Violence Through Environmental Discrimination by : Günther Baechler
Download or read book Violence Through Environmental Discrimination written by Günther Baechler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since all-out interstate wars for the time being seem to belong to the past, con flict studies focus more and more on domestic conflicts. This is a broad field, not only because the arbitrary line between war and sub-war violence disap pears and the analyst is confronted with phenomena reaching from criminal violence and clashes between communities to violent conflicts of long duration and civil wars with massacres and genocides as their characteristics. It is also because there are so many different types of conflicts to be analyzed, so many different types of behavior to be studied, whereas there is often little informa tion available on what is really going on. Against the background of internal conflicts, which tend to be as protracted as diffuse in terms of time, intensity, actors, and their goals, this study aims to follow a specific pathway through the current thicket of violent circumstances. It focuses on causation patterns by exploring the causal role of the environ mental factor in the genesis of violent conflicts occurring today and probably even more so tomorrow. This approach, which for once does not focus on a specific level of the conflict system, on one area in the conflict geography, or on a specific category of actors, analyzes causation dynamics.

Book Synopsis Environmental Organizations in Modern Germany by : William T. Markham
Download or read book Environmental Organizations in Modern Germany written by William T. Markham and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2008-08-01 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: German environmental organizations have doggedly pursued environmental protection through difficult times: hyperinflation and war, National Socialist rule, postwar devastation, state socialism in the GDR, and confrontation with the authorities during the 1970s and 1980s. The author recounts the fascinating and sometimes dramatic story of these organizations from their origins at the end of the nineteenth century to the present, not only describing how they reacted to powerful social movements, including the homeland protection and socialist movements in the early years of the twentieth century, the Nazi movement, and the anti-nuclear and new social movements of the 1970s and 1980s, but also examining strategies for survival in periods like the current one, when environmental concerns are not at the top of the national agenda. Previous analyses of environmental organizations have almost invariably viewed them as parts of larger social structures, that is, as components of social movements, as interest groups within a political system, or as contributors to civil society. This book, by contrast, starts from the premise that through the use of theories developed specifically to analyze the behavior of organizations and NGOs we can gain additional insight into why environmental organizations behave as they do.
Book Synopsis The Voice of the People? by : Wim Blockmans
Download or read book The Voice of the People? written by Wim Blockmans and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-01-31 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last two centuries, Europe has developed various forms of political representation from which democratic parliamentary systems gradually emerged. This book unravels the conditions, scale and impact under which political participation of common burghers and peasants emerged. Political participation in Europe before the Revolutions moved away from the traditional focus on ‘Three Estates’ which has often blurred the interpretation of popular participation’s role in societies. This book instead examines Europe’s key political variants such as high levels of commercialization and urbanization, combined with a balance of powers between competing categories of actors in society controlling relatively independent resources which lead to political participation forming across the continent. Instead of starting from any ideal type of political participation, this book focuses on the variation through time and space, its composition and activity, helps to explain the functions particular institutional settings fulfilled. The time frame 1100–1800 sheds light on the long-term evolutions such as institutional inertia and processes of oligarchizing. To reveal a correlation of economic and demographical growth with the claim of rising social classes to voice their interests. It also points to the opposite tendency: the formation of fiscalmilitary monarchical states. This book is essential reading for those interested in the formation of Europe’s political structures and students of premodern political history.

Book Synopsis Transitional Justice in Post-Revolutionary Tunisia (2011–2013) by : Domenica Preysing
Download or read book Transitional Justice in Post-Revolutionary Tunisia (2011–2013) written by Domenica Preysing and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-28 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Domenica Preysing offers a critical reading of “transitional justice” that focuses on political dynamics in post-revolutionary Tunisia, from the ouster of president Ben Ali in January 2011 until the adoption of transitional justice bill in December 2013. She explores the role, structure and characteristics of evolving transitional justice policy discourse to provide a better understanding of how, by who, and to what effect the policy label “transitional justice” is progressively filled with meaning. She shows that conflicting interpretations of both the past and the present have been both deeply embedded in and an expression of the dynamic context of domestic political transformation, as old and new elites struggle over the political identity and direction of post-Ben Ali Tunisia.
Book Synopsis The Will of Change by : Eva-Maria Maggi
Download or read book The Will of Change written by Eva-Maria Maggi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-13 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Eva-Maria Maggi argues that the European Union (EU) had an impact on institutional reform processes in North Africa in cases where major domestic actors agreed. She analyzes how political actors in Morocco used EU neighborhood policies to shape economic and environmental policy between 1995 and 2008. Maggi argues that it was not the design of the EU‘s neighborhood policies but rather the will of change of domestic actors in Morocco that determined the pace, direction of reform and the extent to which the EU continues to play a role in them. While Moroccan politics were indeed “europeanized” Maggi highlights the role of domestic actors who so effectively managed to put forth their own policy priorities and essentially “morocconized” the ENP.
