Um diese Ziele erreichen zu können, ist der interdisziplinäre Ansatz dieser Arbeit unerlässlich; es werden somit Erkenntnisse der Linguistik, der Neurobiologie sowie der Sozialpädagogik und der Interkulturellen Pädagogik herangezogen.

Vor allem die Sprachdefizite von Migrantenkindern in der deutschen Sprache werden hervorgehoben. Während Mehrsprachigkeit einerseits als wichtige Kompetenz anerkannt wird, sieht es bei der Erziehung von Kindern mit Migrationshin-tergrund anders aus: In der Regel werden nicht die spezifischen mehrsprachigen und interkulturellen Entwicklungsprofile gesehen, sondern die Mehrsprachigkeit dieser Kinder wird problemorientiert betrachtet und eher als Belastung im Kindergartenalltag empfunden. Diese Arbeit setzt sich mit dem Thema Mehrsprachigkeit bei Kindern mit Migrations-hintergrund und der Bedeutung von interkultureller Bildung in Kindertagesstätten auseinander. Es soll insbesondere auf die Probleme hingewiesen werden, die so-wohl für die Kinder in den Tagesstätten als auch für die Institutionen bestehen. In diesem Zusammenhang muss auch auf die Rolle der pädagogischen Fachkräfte und auf die besondere und wichtige Rolle der Muttersprache aufmerksam gemacht wer-den. Die Arbeit gliedert sich in vier Kapitel: Im ersten Kapitel erfolgt eine kurze Erläuterung zur Entstehung von Mehrsprachigkeit in Deutschland sowie eine Definition zum Begriff Mehrsprachigkeit. Im zweiten Abschnitt erfolgt ein Überblick über die Bedeutung der Muttersprache und die Mehrsprachigkeit – zum einen für die Kinder mit Migrationshintergrund und zum anderen für die Kindertageseinrichtung. Anschließend wird die Interdependenz- Hypothese vorgestellt, die einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Annerkennung der Mutter-sprache von Kindern mit Migrationshintergrund geleistet hat. Im dritten Abschnitt werden interkulturelle Aspekte in der Kindertageseinrichtung dar-gestellt – insbesondere Aspekte zur interkulturellen Bildung. Im letzten Kapitel erfolgt ein Überblick über aktuelle Maßnahmen der Politik zur Sprachförderung speziell in Niedersachsen.

Assumptions about the values of cultural pluralism and the rise of the "unmeltable ethnics" so dominant for the last twenty years have met a renewed public affirmation of the value of assimilation. In the United States "bilingual education" refers to programs that emphasize students' home languages and culture; teach academic subject matter in students' home languages; and introduce English into the curriculum at a deliberate pace. Students in such programs are generally members of immigrant groups and racial and ethnic minorities, and they usually come from lower-class economic backgrounds. Over the years, a number of different objectives have been advanced for bilingual education programs. In the 1960s and early 1970s, educators believed that these programs should be evaluated by students' linguistic proficiency and progress on standardized tests. More recently, advocates have promoted more subjective measures, such as students' enhanced sense of well-being and self-esteem. And yet others argue that the real goals of bilingual education should be social change and economic redistribution, and that programs should be evaluated by these long-range goals. The conference that gave rise to the essays in this volume was the first national symposium at which advocates and critics of bilingual education confronted each other's arguments face-to-face. These essays address the objectives by which bilingual education should be evaluated; the administrative practices by which programs are run; and the latest research findings on the effectiveness of bilingual education. Many schools deal with student populations that due to migration have become increasingly multilingual. Politically, few would argue against the importance of multilingualism; rather, it is promoted to the fullest. However, in practical terms the challenges associated with teaching and educational policies have increased manifold as a result of the linguistic diversity among student bodies. Reading is certainly regarded as a key learning skill, however, the question arises as to how the students' life-world multilingualism is taken into consideration. Furthermore, being considered part of teachers' professional competence, teachers' mental processes and perceptions (beliefs) have been the focus in several different academic fields. Previous research suggests that there are significant links between teachers' beliefs and practices. This thesis explores the aforementioned aspects in greater detail, with the overall aim to gain a deeper understanding of teachers' beliefs and strategies when teaching reading in multilingual settings. Using a cross-disciplinary, qualitative research approach, the empirical inquiry is based on case studies within different, linguistically diverse settings. The case studies include classroom observations as well as teacher interviews in German, Swedish and Chilean grade 4 classrooms.
