Im Regelfall geht es dabei um ein alltagssprachliches Verständnis von Kommunikation, das die - wie auch immer bewerkstelligte - Übertragung von Informationen meint. Kommunikation kann in sozialer Hinsicht nicht einfach als Transportvorgang zwischen Alter und Ego beschrieben werden. Wer sich für Kommunikation interessiert, beobachtet vielmehr die "Hervorbringung" von Sinn zwischen den an Kommunikation Beteiligten. Das ist so, weil Alter und Ego füreinander undurchsichtig sind, so dass Ego nicht wissen kann, was Alter aus einer Mitteilung macht, was für ihn dabei einen Unterschied machen, also zur Information werden wird und wie er diese dann versteht, d.h. sie in seine eigenen Sinnhorizonte einbaut und sie mit den eigenen Erwartungen abgleicht. Erst wenn Alter geantwortet hat, wird der soziale Sinn einer Äußerung - sprachlich, körperlich, schriftlich oder per Email - für die Beteiligten greifbar. Was in Kommunikation also geschieht, ist für beide Seiten in einem hohen Maße kontingent und durch Absichten, Motive usw. nur sehr bedingt zu steuern. Trotzdem gibt es soziale Ordnung. Es gibt Strukturen, Handlungszusammenhänge, Institutionen, in denen Ego mit relativer Sicherheit wissen kann, wie Alter eine Information verstehen und wie er auf sie antworten wird - wie Alter dann auch weiß, was Ego von ihm erwartet. Der systemisch-disziplinübergreifende Forschungsansatz von Paul Watzlawick, Janet Beavin und Don D Jackson wurde in besonderem Maß von den Gründern der Systemtheorie, Wiener und Bertalanffy, beeinflusst. Doch ist es fraglich, ob der Bezug auf technische Systeme ein differenziertes Verständnis von Kommunikation nicht erschwert. Watzlawick entlehnt in seiner Theorie eine Vielzahl von Begriffen wie zum Beispiel „Redundanz“ und „Rückkopplung“ aus der kybernetischen beziehungsweise nachrichtentechnischen Kommunikationstheorie. In der Darstellung ihrer zentralen Theoreme, den pragmatischen Axiomen, kommen die Begriffe jedoch kaum zur Sprache. Diese Tatsache erschwert die Konzentration auf die wesentlichen, für die Kommunikationstheorie relevanten Begrifflichkeiten. Die Systemtheorie des Soziologen Niklas Luhmann ist eine der bedeutendsten Theorien der heutigen Zeit. In seinem lebenslangen Werk verfolgte Luhmann das Ziel, eine für die Soziologie universelle Theorie zu entwickeln, um alle gesellschaftlichen Teilbereiche mit einheitlichen Kategorien beschreiben zu können. Dabei untersuchte er nicht nur fachintern die Theoriekonzeptionen anderer Soziologen, sondern nahm fächerübergreifende Forschungen vor. Zu den Schwierigkeiten in Luhmanns Kommunikationstheorie zählt zudem die exakte Trennung dieser Kommunikationstheorie von seiner Theorie der sozialen Systeme. Denn soziale Systeme sind seiner Ansicht nach identisch mit Kommunikationssystemen, da sie aus ebendiesen bestehen. Möchte man also Luhmanns Kommunikationstheorie darstellen, so stellt man auch immer seine Theorie der sozialen Systeme dar.

Hierzu zählen das Modell der „vier Seiten einer Nachricht“, das Modell des Empfangens mit „vier Ohren“ wie auch die Metakommunikation als Lösungsansatz bei Kommunikationsstörungen. Weiter werde ich im vierten Abschnitt meiner Arbeit auf Schulz von Thuns Bewusstseinstheorien Bezug nehmen. Hier werde ich das Modell des „Inneren Teams“ erläutern sowie im Speziellen auf bedeutende Begrifflichkeiten wie „innere Pluralität“ und „innere Führung“ eingehen. In Abschnitt 5 werde ich mögliche Schnittstellen zwischen Kommunikation und Bewusstsein nach den Thesen und Theorien von Friedemann Schulz von Thun untersuchen. Anschließend erfolgt ein prägnanter Theorienvergleich zwischen Schulz von Thun und Niklas Luhmanns Systemtheorie hinsichtlich offensichtlicher Differenzen aber auch Parallelen. Auf ein Fazit habe ich an bezeichnender Stelle bewusst verzichtet, da das Thema meiner Arbeit doch recht umfangreich ist. Stattdessen habe ich meine eigene Gedanken sowie resümierende Worte an den Schluss der jeweiligen Abschnitte gesetzt.

Damit Kommunikation stattfinden kann, müssen noch andere Voraussetzungen gegeben sein, wie beispielsweise das Vorhandensein eines gemeinsamen Zeichenvorrats. Die Kommunikationspartner sollten sich der gleichen Sprache bedienen können. Wenn dies nicht der Fall ist, reichen teilweise auch nichtsprachliche Zeichen, wie zum Beispiel Mimik und Gestik. Außerdem sollten die Kommunikationspartner die Bedeutung der Worte und Wortfolgen teilen. Diese Voraussetzungen reichen noch nicht aus, damit Kommunikation störfrei ablaufen kann. Schulz von Thun und Watzlawick beschreiben noch weitere Aspekte, die zum gelungenen Austausch von Informationen beitragen können.
