Book excerpt: Logic puzzle book which uses a unique set of logic rules to position number pairs like a jigsaw puzzle. The design elements and logic rules permit a freedom of puzzle layouts. There are no other puzzles which have this kind of variety or use this type of logic. For logical minds, Komino Puzzlescombine the essence of a jigsaw puzzle with logic that determines where and how its parts fit together. This helps to make it a completely novel puzzle solving experience. The book contains twelve different puzzle designs and there are 200 puzzles in the book. Although the rules are easy to learn, the puzzles can be surprisingly challenging on occasions. Each puzzle has been designed to become progressively harder as you advance through the book. There is only one solution for each puzzle, and all the answers along with detailed hints on how the puzzles can be solved are provided at the back of the book. The hints also give an insight into the hidden depths that are possible with these puzzles and this would give experienced puzzle solvers a taste of the challenges that lie inside.

Book Synopsis Navigation by Judgment by : Dan Honig
Download or read book Navigation by Judgment written by Dan Honig and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-29 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign aid organizations collectively spend hundreds of billions of dollars annually, with mixed results. Part of the problem in these endeavors lies in their execution. In Navigation by Judgment, Dan Honig argues that high-quality implementation of foreign aid programs often requires contextual information that cannot be seen by those in distant headquarters. Drawing on a novel database of over 14,000 discrete development projects across nine aid agencies and eight paired case studies of development projects, Honig shows that aid agencies will often benefit from giving field agents the authority to use their own judgments to guide aid delivery. This "navigation by judgment" is particularly valuable when environments are unpredictable and when accomplishing an aid program's goals is hard to accurately measure. Highlighting a crucial obstacle for effective global aid, Navigation by Judgment shows that the management of aid projects matters for aid effectiveness.

Book Synopsis Global Public Investment by : Jonathan Glennie
Download or read book Global Public Investment written by Jonathan Glennie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International cooperation has never been more needed, but the current system of "aid" is outdated and ineffective. The Future of Aid calls for a wholesale restructuring of the aid project, a totally new approach fit for the challenges of the 21st century: Global Public Investment. Across the world, billions of people are struggling to get by in unequal and unsustainable societies, and international public finance, which should be part of the answer, is woefully deficient. Engagingly written by a well-known expert in the field, The Future of Aid calls for a series of paradigm shifts. From a narrow focus on poverty to a broader attack on inequality and sustainability. From seeing international public money as a temporary last resort, to valuing it as a permanent force for good. From North-South transfers to a collective effort, with all paying in and all benefitting. From outdated post-colonial institutions to representative decision-making. From the othering and patronising language of "foreign aid", to the empowering concept of Global Public Investment. Ten years ago, in The Trouble with Aid, Jonathan Glennie highlighted the dangers of aid dependency and the importance of looking beyond aid. Now he calls for a revolution in the way that we think about the role of public money to back up our ambitious global objectives. In the wake of the COVID-19 crisis, it is time for a new era of internationalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lives of people with disabilities are complex and various, and there are many situations where technology – particularly assistive technology – already makes a real difference. It is clear that smart phone and tablet computer based solutions continue to enhance the independence of many users, but it is also important that more traditional assistive technologies and services are not forgotten or neglected. This book presents the proceedings of the 14th conference of the Association for the Advancement of Assistive Technology in Europe (AAATE 2017) entitled: ‘Harnessing the power of technology to improve lives’, held in Sheffield, UK, in September 2017. This 4-day event about assistive technologies (AT) highlights the association’s interest in innovating not only technology, but also services, and addresses the global challenge of meeting the needs of the increasing number of people who could benefit from assistive technology. The 200+ papers in the book are grouped under 30 subject headings, and include contributions on a wide range of topical subjects, including aging well and dementia; care robotics; eHealth and apps; innovations; universal design; sport; and disordered speech. The breadth of the AAATE conference reflects people’s life needs and so the book is sure to contain something of interest to all those whose work involves the design, development and use of assistive technology, whatever the situation. The photo on the front cover illustrates the breadth of assistive technologies that can improve lives. Photographer: Simon Butler.
