Book excerpt: In Japan, breeding koi--a colorful and beautiful member of the carp family--has occupied a position between hobby and art form for more than two centuries. This stunningly illustrated book, compiled by a team of koi experts, shows and tells aquarium enthusiasts virtually everything they need to know about this fascinating activity. Koi are hardy fish, relatively large in size, and the most practical way to keep them is in an outdoor pond. Combining text with illustrations, an important section of the book explains the requirements of a garden pond for koi, showing the filtration system and pointing out how it functions. Most of the book concentrates on koi themselves, focusing on a brief history of koi, advice on buying koi, the fish's physiology, health care, feeding, breeding koi, showing koi, and joining koi clubs. An 80-page section tells all about koi variations, and features color photos of more than 100 varieties. Illustrated two-page spreads review each variety's history, and show both their more desirable and less desirable color markings. Here is a beautifully designed and illustrated volume that emphasizes the special satisfactions of keeping and breeding koi. Approximately 450 color photos and illustrations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Koi Fish Guide for Beginners Koi, or more specifically nishikigoi, are a type of domesticated common carp (Cyprinus carpio) that have been selectively bred for color traits in freshwater ponds and gardens. Ornamental Features: For centuries, these fish have been selectively bred for their bright colors, distinct patterns, and long silhouette, making them the most popular ornamental species in the world. Koi is not only attracted to their ultimate beauty but also wrapped in myriads of symbolisms, mostly popularized by Japanese and Chinese cultures, where they are believed as signs of strength, perseverance, and good fortune. Koi fish originate in China more than a thousand years ago, where carp were first bred as food. But the breeding of carp for ornamental purposes started in Japan around the 19th century. Koi fish are, in reality, domestic versions of common carp, but the word "koi" has been swept into use by those who fancy cute exotic imports. This includes the exciting Gosanke, Showa, and Utsurimono, to just name a few. Koi fish are the largest species of Japanese carp and can feature a variety of colors including white, black, red (hi), yellow (yellow/orange area must be more than 50%), blue, and cream. The Kohaku (white-bodied koi with red patterns, if you don't know it by now, then please move on) is arguably the most iconic variety and easily the face of what fish enthusiasts would think about when mentioning "koi." A common type is the Taisho Sanshoku (or Sanke), which has white skin with red and black designs. The colors have taken centuries to become the koi we now know, and each type of color has its own set of things to look for in terms of quality that breeders (or hobbyists) will use to raise their prize-winning fish. Koi fish go above and beyond to meet the eye; they grow to a monstrous size. Koi can, in fact, grow up to 2-3 feet, and some exceptional specimens have even reached over 4 feet long in optimal conditions. Another amazing characteristic is longevity; koi have been known to live for several decades if cared for properly. Koi are known to live for over 200 years, though this is quite rare and usually due to the meticulous care of the fish in ideal conditions. TO CONTINUE READING, GET YOUR COPY.

Book excerpt: The "mysterious" art of Koi keeping is a long established practice no longer confined to just the Japanese culture and lifestyle as it has been throughout the centuries. Koi, sometimes known as Nishikigoi, are the multi-hued varieties of carp first developed and bred in Japan. However, in recent years Koi keeping has expanded to all corners of the globe and become one of the most popular and sophisticated pastimes around. Unfortunately, authentic Koi keeping is a complex and precise science, a fact many people are not aware of. But, as author Peter Cole explains, just because the task is complex doesn't mean that it's too hard to master. Keeping information simple, Coyle covers all aspects, from buying, rearing and health care to vital details of pond construction, water supply, and seasonal aspects. Koi culture goes back over 1000 years with patience, precision and a love of carp, you, too, can join this intriguing and lengthy tradition.
