Book excerpt: The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) Division of Commercial Fisheries (CFD) staff will operate seven weirs and one fish pass in the Kodiak Management Area (KMA) in 2023–2025. These projects are located on the Karluk River, Ayakulik River, Dog Salmon Creek, Olga Creek (Upper Station), Afognak River (Litnik), Saltery Creek, and Pasagshak River. The weirs are used to enumerate salmon escapements into river systems and are critical management tools because they provide information that assists ADF&G management staff in deciding when to open and close salmon fisheries throughout the season. This operational plan informs seasonal employees of their responsibilities to run effective field camps, operate weirs, and live at remote sites. Operation dates for each weir vary depending upon the run timing of salmon populations into the different systems; however, most begin in mid to late May and continue through mid-September. Chinook Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, sockeye O. nerka, coho O. kisutch, pink O. gorbuscha, and chum salmon O. keta, as well as steelhead trout O. mykiss and Dolly Varden char Salvelinus malma, are individually counted by field crews. Escapement data collected provides the basis for inseason management actions regulating the commercial, sport, and subsistence fisheries in the KMA.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s estimated that 50 to 60 million Americans count birding among their hobbies. Some hang feeders in their backyards and accumulate yard lists; others participate in annual “Christmas Counts”; a select few travel to the ends of the earth in an effort to see every bird in the world. With Fifty Places to Go Birding Before You Die, Chris Santella takes the best-selling “Fifty Places” recipe and applies it to this most popular pastime. Santella presents some of the greatest bird-watching venues in the United States and abroad through interviews with prominent birders, from tour leaders and conservationists to ornithologists and academics. Interviewees include ornithologist Kenn Kaufman; David Allen Sibley, author and illustrator of The Sibley Guide to Birds; Rose Ann Rowlett, the “mother of modern birding”; John Fitzpatrick, director of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology; and Steve McCormick, president and CEO of The Nature Conservancy. The places vary from the urban (New York City’s Central Park) to the mystical (the cloud forests of Triunfo in Chiapas, Mexico) to the extremely remote (the sub-Arctic islands of New Zealand). The book includes 40 gorgeous photographs that capture the vibrancy of our feathered friends, and the beautiful places they call home.

Book excerpt: DEDICATED TO THE NEXT GENERATION OF WOMEN BOARD LEADERSIn 2018, California passed a senate bill (SB 826) to require publicly held companies headquartered in CA to have at least one woman on their board by 2020. In 2020, Nasdaq proposed a mandate that would require listed companies to have at least two diverse board members with one member who identifies as female. Initiatives like these are helping advance gender parity on boards in many regions, not just the U.S. In late 2020, women held 22.6% of the board seats on the Russell 3000 for the first time, a 6.5 point jump over the past 4 years.Zooming out to the global scale, the picture is similarly improving. In 2020, about 23% of board seats globally were held by women, compared to 20% in 2018. Yet...at the time of this writing, 10% of large global companies do not have a single woman on their board. And the percent of women who chair boards is dramatically smaller. Among the largest 500 public U.S. companies by revenue the share of women who chaired boards remained stagnant at 7.4%. Notably, of those women who chair boards, few of them use the term Chairwoman in their bios or LinkedIn profiles-opting for monikers Chairman, or Board Chair, or occasionally Chairperson. This book features the extraordinary voices and stories of women leaders from around the world who have trailblazed to the board room, as letters to the next generation of women in business and government. With the salutation "Dear Chairwoman," these letters are infused with the energy to inspire young women to both pursue board governance early, and to claim the 'Chairwoman' title in taking the senior-most seat in the Board Room.
