Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The military is one of the few institutions that cut across the divides of Indonesian society. As it continues to play a critical part in determining Indonesia's future, the military itself is undergoing profound change. The authors of this book examine the role of the military in politics and society since the fall of President Suharto in 1998. They present several strategic scenarios for Indonesia, which have important implications for U.S.-Indonesian relations, and propose goals for Indonesian military reform and elements of a U.S. engagement policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the breakup of the USSR, it briefly appeared as though Russia's emerging commercial banks might act as engines of growth for a new capitalist economy. However, despite more than a decade of "reforms," Russia's financial system collapsed in 1998. Why had ambitious efforts to decentralize and liberalize the banking industry failed? In A Fistful of Rubles, Juliet Johnson offers the first comprehensive look at how Russia's banks, once expected to revitalize the nation's economy, instead became one of the largest obstacles to its recovery.Drawing on interviews with Russian bankers, policymakers, and entrepreneurs, Johnson traces the evolution of the banking system from 1987 through the aftermath of the 1998 crash. She describes how dysfunctional institutional procedures left over from the Soviet period hindered the subsequent development of sound financial practices. Johnson argues that these legacies, along with misguided, Western-inspired liberalization policies, led to the creation of parasitic banks for which success depended on political connections rather than on investment strategies. Johnson demonstrates that banking reform efforts ultimately did more harm than good, because Russian officials and their international advisers failed to build the corresponding economic, legal, and political institutions upon which modern market behavior depends.

Book Synopsis United Nations peace operations and International Relations theory by : Kseniya Oksamytna
Download or read book United Nations peace operations and International Relations theory written by Kseniya Oksamytna and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-11 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: United Nations peace operations have undergone multiple transformations over the more than seventy years of their existence. Multidimensional peace operations have organised elections, helped deliver humanitarian assistance, advised on army and police reform, and fought rebel groups. Such operations not only represent a core pillar of the multilateral peace and security architecture but also fundamentally reshape lives of millions of people around the world. This volume provides the first comprehensive overview of multiple theoretical perspectives on UN peace operations. It offers practical examples of how International Relations theories apply to specific policy issues and simultaneously demonstrates how major debates on UN peace operations - on civilian protection, local ownership, or gender mainstreaming - benefit from theoretical exploration. With insightful contributions from a range of international academics, UN peace operations and International Relations theory is an essential book for scholars, students, and experts working on peace and security and the broader issue of international cooperation.
Book Synopsis 100 Years of Identity Crisis by : Frank Furedi
Download or read book 100 Years of Identity Crisis written by Frank Furedi and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of Identity Crisis came into usage in the 1940s and it has continued to dominate the cultural zeitgeist ever since. In his exploration of the historical origins of this development, Frank Furedi argues that the principal driver of the ‘crisis of identity’ was and continues to be the conflict surrounding the socialisation of young people. In turn, the politicisation of this conflict provides a terrain on which the Culture Wars and the politicisation of identity can flourish. Through exploring the interaction between the problems of socialisation and identity, this study offers a unique account of the origins and rise of the Culture Wars.

Book Synopsis Hitler's Bounty Hunters by : Ad van Liempt
Download or read book Hitler's Bounty Hunters written by Ad van Liempt and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2005-04-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why were the Nazis so successful in deporting Jews? Why did families such as Anne Frank's get turned in? Investigative journalist Ad van Liempt pulls back the curtain on the shocking practice of Dutch bounty hunters of the Jews, and reveals that ordinary citizens were prepared to turn over their Jewish countrymen in exchange for cash.Van Liempt examines in great detail the careers of bounty hunters and describes some particularly horrifying cases. The most gripping are those involving young children. In one case, two bounty hunters traveled hundreds of miles to get their hands on a two-year-old girl living in a safe house; a month later she was gassed at Sobibor. In court, the bounty hunters consistently maintained that they received no premiums for their work, but the author shows the opposite to be true and traces the money involved. This haunting book uncovers a facet of the Holocaust that has previously been largely neglected and brings to light the day-to-day workings of the persecution of the Jews.
