Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book-length work on wartime race relations in Tennessee, and it stresses the differences within the slave community as well as Military Governor Andrew Johnson’s role in emancipation. In Tennessee a significant number of slaves took advantage of the disruptions resulting from federal invasion to escape servitude and to seek privileges enjoyed by whites. Some rushed into theses changes, believing God had ordained them; others acted simply from a willingness to seize any opportunity for improving their lot. Both groups felt a sense of dignity that their slaves initiated a change; they lacked the power and resources to secure and expand the gains they made on their own. Because most disloyal slaves supported the Union while most white Tennesseans did not, the federal army eventually decided to encourage and capitalize upon slave discontent. Idealistic Northern reformers simultaneously worked to establish new opportunities for Southern blacks. The reformers’ paternalistic attitudes and the army’s concern with military expediency limited the aid they extended to blacks. Black poverty, white greed, and white racial prejudice severely restricted change, particularly in the former slaves’ economic position. The more significant changes took the form of new social privileges for the freedmen: familial security, educational opportunities, and religious independence. Masters had occasionally granted these benefits to some slaves, but what the disloyal slaves wanted and won was the formalization of these privileges for all blacks in the state.

The streets have echoed with gunfire as Knoxville survived the violence of frontier times, the Civil War, and the shadowy gaslight decades when the elite classes strolled Gay Street while just down the hill in the saloon district known as the Bowery, murderers and thieves played their dark dangerous games. Join writer and history tour guide Laura Still on a journey into her home town's past as she tells the amazing true stories behind the ghostly phantoms and unquiet spirits that haunt Knoxville. Featuring: 75 photos and illustrations; 23 haunted houses and buildings; 10 spooky burial grounds; 81/2 hanged men; 3 tragic love stories; and 40 chapters of untimely death and mysterious phenomena. Storyteller Laura Still, a native Tennessean, is a published poet and playwright as well as storyteller and guide for her tour business, Knoxville Walking Tours. Foreword by columnist and Knoxville history author Jack Neely.

Book excerpt: South Knoxville is an area of Knoxville located just south of the Tennessee River. Although a small subsection of the city, Knoxville owes much of its current success to this little community that was once the home of a bustling marble and lumber industry. As the origin of such landmarks as Ijams Nature Center, Fort Dickerson, Fort Higley, Fort Stanley, and the Gov. John Sevier Home, South Knoxville also now is host to a thriving arts and trade district.
