Book excerpt: Excerpt from Knox County in the World War, 1917, 1918, 1919 After the peace negotiations in the fall of 1916 proved fruitless, the German government, yielding to the advice of its military party that this course would put the war to a speedy end, announced on January '31, 1917, that unrestricted submarine warfare would be carried on in specified zones. Four days later Ambassador Bernstorff was handed his passports and our friendly relations with Germany ceased. On February 26 President Wilson asked for authority to arm merchant vessels as a protection against submarine attacks. A few days after, he appeared before a memorable joint session of the Congress, set forth the attempts he had made to maintain friendly relations with Germany, and asked that the existence of a state of war between the two nations be declared. On April 4, 1917, the Senate passed the war resolution by a vote of 82 to 6, while the House Of Representatives, after a wild and stormy session which lasted until 3 o'clock on the morning of April 6, also adopted it by a vote of 373 to 50. The president affixed his Signature to the resolution the same day. Its text was as follows. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the World War, 1917, 1918, 1919: Cottonwood County, Minnesota President Wilson demanded that Germany cease her unlawful attacks upon American shipping, but his righteous demands were met with evasion. Events moved fast, Germany paid no heed to the President's protests, and the United States Govern ment resolved to arm the American ships and to repel such attacks. This course proved useless, so war was the only alternative. On April 6, 1917. Congress passed a resolution de claring that a state of war existed between the United States Government and the German Empire, and the President issued a proclamation calling the nation to arms. Volunteers were called to recruit the Army and Navy and the people were called upon to support the government in any emergency. Every loyal citizen was expected to do his duty. The government at Washington could not win the war alone. The call to service went out to' the remotest parts of the country and the response from all over the land brought with it the assurance of victory. Immediately upon the declaration of war, a call was made for the Army and Navy, the country heretofore always relying on this method of rais ing troops for the army. A great number of our patriotic men and boys responded to this call and were sent to the various camps and training schools which the government had established. When this call to service came the boys of Cottonwood County responded nobly by enlisting in the Army, Navy and Marine Corps. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Mr. Knox's Country A youngish woman, with a heavy mop of dark hair, and brown eyes staring at the opposite wall, was sitting at the end of a settle behind the door. Every bit of her was trembling. She looked past me as if I did not exist. Feeling uncertain as to whether she or I were mad, I put to her my question as to where David Courtney lived, with out much expectation of receiving an answer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lest We Forget: 1917 1919 At a special service, attended by the Patriotic Order Sons of America, the Church was presented with a suitable flag and pole. Which was located at the right - hand side of the pulpit. The Men's League also placed a flagpole on the front of the Church building and furnished a flag for general use: and Mr. Harry A. Schmoll, the President of the League, presented the Church with a large and beautiful flag. To be displayed on this pole during favorable weather. The Church was also presented with a handsome Service flag, through the kindness of Mrs. I. P. Pardee. This flag. Containing eighty-six stars. Remained in position on the outside of the Church building throughout the war period. We should furthermore be glad to remember that When the war activities of the community were most urgent in their demands the response of our Congregation was unanimous and always most admirable and praiseworthy. The women were untiring in their support of the Red Cross Society and the Red Cross Canteen. The men worked with the Liberty Loan Organization. Served effectively with the four-minute Men. Assisted the Local Exemption Board. And entered into every line of activity with enthusiasm all aglow and a perseverance that knew no bounds.
