In Nigeria, late presentations of breast cancer cases have also been consistent for three decades. In an environment where there is no established national screening program for breast cancer, it is pertinent to assess the knowledge of breast cancer and its early detection measures. The objective of this study therefore, was to assess rural women's level of knowledge of breast cancer and its early detection measures. This study revealed that respondents lacked knowledge of vital issues about breast cancer and early detection measures. It also revealed that health workers were not forthcoming with information to the public thereby constituting a challenge to community health nurses and other health workers, to provide vital information to the public.

Book excerpt: Worldwide, breast cancer is the commonest cancer in women and it is characterized by regional variations and late clinical presentation and poor access in low and middle income countries including Nigeria. It is disproportionately responsible for mortality among women in developing countries compared to those in developed countries. There are several challenges associated with the effective management of breast cancer in Nigeria; financial barriers limit womens access to screening and treatment services, late-stage presentation, high incidence of triple negative breast cancers and failure in stewardship by government in their inability to provide the best possible cancer care like their counterparts in the West. There is an urgent need to step up activities through governmental and non-governmental agencies to promote advocacy, national policy on training of personnel for diagnosis, clinical and self-breast examination and nationwide screening program (mammography) in order to enhance early detection, control the upward trends and reduce the mortality rate associated with breast cancer. Routine age appropriate and specific breast screening should become an integral part of healthcare system in Nigeria allowing for early detection and intervention; aggressive awareness campaign on the advantages of early diagnosis and the dangers of late presentation, need to offer universal and affordable treatment, implementation of a strategy to offer annual mammogram to women above the age threshold for breast cancer, increased budgetary allocation for the diagnosis and management of cancer, more investment in the training of healthcare workers involved in the diagnosis and management of breast cancer, provision of Health Education encouraging women to conduct routine Breast Self Examination (BSE). BSE could become a simple, low-priced, secure, effective, appropriate and feasible screening tool in Nigeria. There is need to re-emphasize the importance of prompt reporting of any new breast symptoms to a health professional. Clinical Breast Examination (CBE) should become part of a periodic health examination, preferably at least every three years. Asymptomatic women aged 40 and over should be offered a CBE as part of a periodic health examination, preferably annually. Objective implementation of these steps can help reduce the incidence of breast cancer-related mortality in Nigeria.

Book excerpt: Late presentation has been observed as the hallmark of breast cancer in Nigerian women and an earlier onset has been reported in this population. This study was designed to assess the awareness of female health workers about risk factors and screening methods for early detection of breast cancer. These female health workers who are expected to act as role models and educate the public had poor knowledge of risk factors for breast cancer and practice of breast cancer screening. There is very urgent need for regular update courses for health workers concerning breast cancer education including screening methods.

Organized by region/continent, coverage for each profiled country includes demographic information; a historical overview that addresses past racial/ethnic conflict; identification of the most salient demographic trends and issues that the country faces; theoretical issues related to the linkages between stratification, demography, and conflict; methodological issues including quality of data and cutting-edge methods to better understand the issue at hand; and details on the possible future of the existing trends and issues with particular emphasis on public policy and human rights. This handbook will help readers to better understand the commonalities and differences that exist globally in the interplay between stratification, demography, and conflict. In addition, it also provides an excellent inventory of theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches that are needed to better comprehend this issue. This handbook will appeal to students, researchers, and policy analysts in the areas of race and ethnic relations, demography, inequality, international sociology, international relations, foreign studies, social geography, and social development.

Book excerpt: The relative lack of information on determinants of disease, disability, and death at major stages of a woman's lifespan and the excess morbidity and premature mortality that this engenders has important adverse social and economic ramifications, not only for Sub-Saharan Africa, but also for other regions of the world as well. Women bear much of the weight of world production in both traditional and modern industries. In Sub-Saharan Africa, for example, women contribute approximately 60 to 80 percent of agricultural labor. Worldwide, it is estimated that women are the sole supporters in 18 to 30 percent of all families, and that their financial contribution in the remainder of families is substantial and often crucial. This book provides a solid documentary base that can be used to develop an agenda to guide research and health policy formulation on female health--both for Sub-Saharan Africa and for other regions of the developing world. This book could also help facilitate ongoing, collaboration between African researchers on women's health and their U.S. colleagues. Chapters cover such topics as demographics, nutritional status, obstetric morbidity and mortality, mental health problems, and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV.

Book excerpt: This book gathers a collection of essays that describe recent innovations in food technology including food processing, packaging, food safety, and novel ingredients. By 2050, the world will face the challenge of having to feed an estimated 9 billion people. In order to meet that challenge, innovations in food research are of the utmost importance. The book is divided into four sections, each of which explores an important aspect like food processing, food microbiology, and nutritional security. Written by respected scholars in the field, the respective chapters discuss a range of new and enhanced food materials, as well as processing innovations to extend shelf life and reduce toxic effects. The book also addresses the health potential of various nutraceuticals, bio-absorption of metals and their positive impacts on living systems, as well as methods for reducing food wastage, preventing the loss of nutritive value, and preserving or enhancing palatability. Given its scope, the book will be highly interesting for food scientists, both in academia and the food industry. It will also benefit advanced graduate students and senior researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on food security and safety issues in Africa, a continent presently challenged with malnutrition and food insecurity. The continuous increase in the human population of Africa will lead to higher food demands, and climate change has already affected food production in most parts of Africa, resulting in drought, reduced crop yields, and loss of livestock and income. For Africa to be food-secure, safe and nutritious food has to be available, well-distributed, and sufficient to meet people’s food requirements. Contributors to Food Security and Safety: African Perspectives offer solutions to the lack of adequate safe and nutritious food in sub-Saharan Africa, as well as highlight the positive efforts being made to address this lack through a holistic approach. The book discusses the various methods used to enhance food security, such as food fortification, fermentation, genetic modification, and plant breeding for improved yield and resistance to diseases. Authors emphasize the importance of hygiene and food safety in food preparation and preservation, and address how the constraints of climate change could be overcome using smart crops. As a comprehensive reference text, Food Security and Safety: African Perspectives seeks to address challenges specific to the African continent while enhancing the global knowledge base around food security, food safety, and food production in an era of rapid climate change.

The unique styles of conceptualising food systems and writing about them were preserved. Photographs and tables accompany each chapter.

Book excerpt: The Theory at a Glance: A Guide for Health Promotion Practice (Second Edition) describes influential theories of health-related behaviors, processes of shaping behavior, and the effects of community and environmental factors on behavior. It complements existing resources that offer tools, techniques, and model programs for practice. Theory at a Glance makes health behavior theory accessible and provides tools to solve problems and assess the effectiveness of health promotion programs. For nearly a decade, public health and health care practitioners have consulted the original version of Theory at a Glance for guidance on using theories about human behavior to inform program planning, implementation, and evaluation. Theory at a Glance can be used as a stand-alone handbook, as part of in-house staff development programs, or in conjunction with theory texts and continuing education workshops.
