Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2017 in the subject Pedagogy - Job Education, Occupational Training, Further Education, grade: 100, University of Central Florida (School of Nursing), language: English, abstract: HIV/AIDS is a very present pandemic and has claimed the lives of more than 35 million people worldwide. Persons living with HIV/AIDS often require health care during the course of their disease and in an array of healthcare settings. Nurses are often the frontrunners of patient care and it is essential that care is provided without bias, stigma or poor attitudes towards the patient. Although some countries offer HIV/AIDS education to student nurses, few have mandatory and standardized HIV/AIDS education. This review includes four studies that compare the effectiveness of HIV/AIDS education on stigmas and attitudes towards PLWHA. In consideration of the growing numbers of PLWHA, nursing students may benefit from generalized education to address attitudes and stigmas towards any patient, not just the PLWHA.

Book excerpt: This study uses a descriptive, comparative design to examine, describe, and compare HIV knowledge and attitudes towards caring for HIV/AIDS patients among senior baccalaureate nursing students in the United States of America and Thailand. Either the English or the Thai version of HIV Knowledge Questionnaire (HIV-KQ 45), AIDS Attitude Scale (AAS), and the Caring Survey were administered. Participants of this study come from convenience samples from the schools of nursing at the four universities: 49 U.S senior nursing students at New York University, 50 U.S. senior nursing students at University of Missouri-Columbia, 50 Thai senior nursing students at Chiang-Mai University, and 55 Thai senior nursing students at Prince of Songkla University. The key findings identified that U.S. students, regardless of HIV/AIDS prevalence area, had significantly greater HIV/AIDS knowledge than Thai students. Only the U.S. students practicing in the high HIV/AIDS prevalence area had significantly better attitude and caring scores compared to Thai students who [are] also practicing in the high HIV/AIDS prevalence area.

Book excerpt: With only five per cent of the world's population, the Southern African region is home to approximately 30 per cent of the world total of people living with HIV/AIDS. This pandemic continues to grow at a staggering rate, placing tremendous strain on already stretched health services and on the health professionals providing treatment and care, especially nurses and midwives who are usually the first point of contact for patients. This report highlights the work of some of the many thousands of nurses and midwives who are at the front line of HIV/AIDS care in the region. In doing so, it seeks to pay tribute to all nursing staff throughout the region who refuse to give up despite the huge challenges they face, and to share best practice to improve the quality of care and support for people living with HIV/AIDS.

Book excerpt: Title. A Literature Review to Explore Global Registered Nurses' Attitudes towards People living with HIV. Aim. The aim of the literature review was to identify the existing attitudes of global registered nurses' towards people living with HIV and the factors which contribute towards these. Methods. A systematic search carried out using four databases (CINAHL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, BNI) to identify six papers. A manual search of the reference lists identified a further three papers. The final nine papers were then subject to critical appraisal using Woolliams et al, (2009) developed critical appraisal tool. Findings. The findings from the systematic review have identified a combination of positive and negative attitudes of global registered nurses' towards people living with HIV. The thematic analysis identified professional, practice and personal attributes to be the three main factors which affect nurses' attitudes. Conclusion. Nurses are in an excellent position to reduce stigma and discrimination towards HIV-positive patients through the practice of non-discriminatory and compassionate care. This study revealed that there were some negative practices towards people living with HIV as a result of a lack of knowledge, and organisational factors. It is crucial towards the management of the HIV epidemic that nurses and other health professionals are aware of these negative practices and how they can contribute towards HIV patients disengaging with health providers. It is of great importance that RNs around the world are provided with the appropriate education and training to meet the increased care demands of people living with HIV.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this study is to investigate the perceived stigmatization of and discrimination against people who are HIV positive or people who are living with AIDS. One questionnaire was used to collect qualitative and quantitative data. Data collection was conducted for a period of three weeks in the Eastern Cape province at the Zwartwater area in Lady Frere and at the Queenstown (Frontier) Hospital. A sample of 170 (of the 900) females was interviewed, of which 100 were sequentially sampled from the community and 70 were sequentially sampled whilst they were queuing at the Queenstown (Frontier) Hospital for care. Households from the rural area were selected by visiting every fourth house on the route linking the houses in this area. At the hospital, selection started at the back of the queue and every sixth person was selected and interviewed. Scores were calculated for knowledge and attitudes towards people who are HIV-positive and towards people who have AIDS. It was found that knowledge and attitude scores did not differ between the various age groups tested. It was fiirthermore found that an increased knowledge score improved attitudes towards people who are HIV-positive or have AIDS.
