Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mysterious and haunting Grail makes its first appearance in literature in Chrétien de Troyes' Perceval at the end of the twelfth century. But Chrétien never finished his poem, leaving an unresolved story and an incomplete picture of the Grail. It was, however, far too attractive an idea to leave. Not only did it inspire quite separate works; his own unfinished poem was continued and finally completed by no fewer than four other writers. The Complete Story of the Grail is the first ever translation of the whole of the rich and compelling body of tales contained in Chrétien's poem and its four Continuations, which are finally attracting the scholarly attention they deserve. Besides Chrétien's original text, there are the anonymous First Continuation (translated here in its fullest version), the Second Continuation attributed to Wauchier de Denain, and the intriguing Third and Fourth Continuations - probably written simultaneously, with no knowledge of each other's work - by Manessier and Gerbert de Montreuil. Two other poets were drawn to create preludes explaining the background to Chrétien's story, and translated here also are their works: The Elucidation Prologue and Bliocadran. Only in this, The Story of the Grail's complete form, can the reader appreciate the narrative skill and invention of the medieval poets and their surprising responses to Chrétien's theme - not least their crucial focus on the knight as a crusader. Equally, Chrétien's original poem was almost always copied in conjunction withone or more of the Continuations, so this translation represents how most medieval readers would have encountered it. Nigel Bryant's previous translations from Medieval French include Perlesvaus - the High Bookof the Grail, Robert de Boron's trilogy Merlin and the Grail, the Medieval Romance of Alexander, The True Chronicles of Jean le Bel and Perceforest.

Book excerpt: Featuring twenty major works of European poetry over a period of a thousand years, this collection charts the development of verse from the fall of the Roman Empire to the birth of the Renaissance. Contrary to popular belief, the poetry of the Dark Ages enjoyed a pioneering development, exploring new metres and complex imagery. Throughout the Middle Ages, poetry adopted numerous forms across the continent, from the epic greatness of the ‘chanson de geste’ to the sublime lyrical qualities of love poetry. This eBook provides a rich sample of medieval poetry; from the earliest dawn of English literature to the unparalleled brilliance of Dante; from the courtly adventures of Arthurian legend to the stirring lays of the Vikings; from the Eastern magic of Georgia to the ribald genius of Chaucer; this collection will immerse you in the perilous, amusing and tantalising world of the Middle Ages. (Version 1) * Beautifully illustrated with images relating to the poets’ lives and works * Concise introductions to the works * Most of the poems appear with their original medieval texts, as well as an English translation — ideal for students * Images of how the original manuscripts first appeared, giving your eReader a taste of the medieval texts * Excellent formatting of the poems * Easily locate the sections you want to read * Features three critical works on the development of medieval literature * Scholarly ordering of texts into chronological order Please visit www.delphiclassics.com to see our wide range of poet titles CONTENTS: Medieval Poetry Hymn by Cædmon (7th century) Christ II by Cynewulf (8th century) (Tr. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive encyclopedia of characters, places, objects, and themes found in the legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round table. Draws from all significant source between Gildas' De Excidio Britanniae written about 540 AD and Tennyson's 19th-century Idylls of the King, including versions from throughout Europe. The entries range from a short identifying sentence to nearly ten pages for the king himself. Each is referenced to a source, which are presented in a endtable showing author and tit date, form, and langua description; keywords from the entries; and recent editions, a vital bit of information such references usually neglect. The cross-referencing is fairly good, often done as a full entry identifying a name as a variant of another, so the lack of an index is not a problem. Distributed in the US by Taylor and Francis.
