It’s been over a year since their last whirlwind adventure. Perry Dobbs is 15 already. He’s moved away from video games and shiny gewgaws, and he’s grown closer to his crush - but only enough to count her freckles. His mother, “The Dragon”, is dating again. Perry’s not happy about that, and he’s not going to budge. Arvin Pewter is turning 15 today. He’s still the same witty little person with wild, red hair, and loves science and girls – one in particular. No doubt, the boy’s got mojo. His mother has also met someone new, someone just like his father. As the new year is set to begin at Nelson High, Perry and Arvin have a lot on their plate. With both of their mothers occupied and a bully out to terrorize them, their friendship has become stronger than ever. When Perry is robbed of his magical gewgaw, the world's knick-knacks also come to life. And they’re not happy. Perry and Arvin must fight an onslaught of crazed garden gnomes, dive-bombing crystal birds and fire-breathing dragons, crazy nesting dolls, and armies of figurines marching toward world domination. Book excerpt: Up until the moment a fatal system crash booted him out of the simulation he’d been living in, Anton Martins thought he was a child of the 80s living in the shadows of a rapidly escalating Cold War. Now he roams the ruins of a civilization destroyed by zombies, homicidal robots, nuclear weapons, but – most of all – the bumbling foolishness of the same super corp that created the game he grew up in. Relying on his old simulator habits, Anton seeks out a new niche for himself by taking up any job or errand offered, dragging his new companions – a Soviet survivalist, a mechanically-minded goth, and an inept aspiring engineer – in his wake. The shambling silhouettes of preservative-laden, sugar zombies threaten at every turn as the party struggles to survive in the Wastelands, save a small settlement from itself, and decipher the lingering whispers of a wise man from the World Before. But the apocalypse is no video game, and humanity has no one to blame but itself…

On who would you depend for encouragement if everyone you knew arched their chest against you, or turned and sank away? What would you do to protect an idea, to keep safe your future? What did God do? Elohiyms decision to give his creation the ability to choose creates quite the commotion in the heavens, but none are ready to accept the danger that has suddenly appeared, a secret that Elohiym has kept to himself. His friend, Beola Hone, tries desperately to turn Elohiym from his intentions, and to save him from a broken heart. For his personal story, that of Biyith Min, did not fair well when Beola Hone placed upon his Ambassador King the ability to choose.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maria Scott's study of the operation of irony in Baudelaire's Le Spleen de Paris contends that the principal target of the collection's spleen is its own readership. Baudelaire, as one of the most perceptive cultural commentators of the nineteenth century, was naturally very keenly aware of the growing dominance of the bourgeoisie in France, not least as a market for art and literature. Despite being dependent on this market for his own writing, the poet was highly critical of bourgeois values and attitudes. Scott builds on existing criticism of the collection to argue that these are indirectly mocked in Le Spleen de Paris, often in the person of the poet's supposed textual alter ego. The contention is that the prose poems betray the trust of readers by way of an apparent transparency of meaning that functions to blind us to their embedded irony. Though focused on Le Spleen de Paris, Scott's study engages with the full range of Baudelaire's writings, including his art and literary criticism. Her book will be of interest not only to Baudelaire scholars but also to those engaged more generally with nineteenth-century French culture.
