Download or read book Fast Forward written by Lou Anders and published by Pyr. This book was released on 2009-09-18 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science Fiction is the genre that looks at the implications of technology on society, which in this age of exponential technological growth makes it the most relevant branch of literature going. This is only the start, and the close of the 21st century will look absolutely nothing like its inception. It has been said that science fiction is an ongoing dialogue about the future, and the front line of that dialogue is the short story. The field has a long history of producing famous anthologies to showcase its distinguished short fiction, but it has been several years since there has been a prestigious all-original science fiction anthology series. Fast Forward is offered in the tradition of Damon Knight’s prestigious and influential anthology series, Orbit, and Frederik Pohl’s landmark Star SF. Fast Forward marks the start of a new hard science fiction anthology series, dedicated to presenting the vanguard of the genre and charting the undiscovered country that is the future. Contributors scheduled for the first volume include: Kage Baker, Paolo Bacigalupi, Tony Ballantyne, Stephen Baxter, Elizabeth Bear, A. M. Dellamonica, Paul Di Filippo, Robyn Hitchcock, Louise Marley, Ken MacLeod, Ian McDonald, John Meaney, Larry Niven and Brenda Cooper, Mike Resnick and Nancy Kress, Justina Robson, Pamela Sargent, Mary A. Turzillo, Robert Charles Wilson, Gene Wolfe, and George Zebrowski.

Book Synopsis Interstate Arbitrations in the Greek World, 337–90 B.C. by : Sheila L. Ager
Download or read book Interstate Arbitrations in the Greek World, 337–90 B.C. written by Sheila L. Ager and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 789 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A great deal of information has come to light over the past several decades about the role of arbitration between the Greek states. Arbitration and mediation were, in fact, central institutions in Hellenistic public life. In this comprehensive study, Sheila Ager brings together the scattered body of literary and epigraphical sources on arbitration, together with up-to-date bibliographic references, and commentary. The sources collected here range widely; Ager presents an exhaustive record of documents ranging from the settlement of a minor territorial squabble between two tiny city-states to the resolution of major conflicts separating the great powers of the day. In addition, Ager's introduction sets the documents in historical context and outlines distinctions among categories of arbitration. The work also includes indices to literary passages, inscriptions, persons, places, subjects, and Greek and Latin terms in the documents. This collection of many previously inaccessible texts will become a primary resource for any scholar or student working in the field of Hellenistic history.

Book Synopsis Simple Rotor Analysis through Tutorial Problems by : Rajiv Tiwari
Download or read book Simple Rotor Analysis through Tutorial Problems written by Rajiv Tiwari and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-12-11 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses various rotor systems, rotor dynamics and dynamics of rotating machinery problems through tutorials. Most of the covered problems can be derived and solved using hand calculations for deeper understanding of the subject. It correlates the examples provided in this book with real machinery where it can be used, and readers can analyse their own simple rotor system based on the variety of examples presented. All problems are supplemented by independent MATLAB® codes for exploring the subject with more ease with graphical outputs. Features: • Rotordynamics terminology and phenomena are introduced with very simple rotor-bearing models. • In-depth analytical dynamic analysis of rotors mounted in flexible bearings and the effect of gyroscopic effects in simple rotor systems are covered. • Offers the possibility for the reader to reproduce the results and see how the equations are derived and solved in rotor dynamics. • A few examples of simple rotor-bearing-coupling systems, rotor-bearing-foundation systems and two-spool rotors are covered. • Directions are provided to extend the present exercise problems and their solutions. • Examples are supplemented by MATLAB® codes with detailed solution steps. • Includes multiple-choice questions and their solutions. This book is aimed at senior undergraduate/graduate students in mechanical engineering, as well as scientists and practice engineers from the field of rotordynamics, rotating machinery/turbomachinery and aerospace engineering.

Book Synopsis Second Zechariah and the Deuteronomic School by : Raymond F. Person, Jr.
Download or read book Second Zechariah and the Deuteronomic School written by Raymond F. Person, Jr. and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1993-11-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Person concludes that the Deuteronomic school's redactional activity continued into the postexilic period. In Part I, he first critiques the commonly-held conclusion that the Deuteronomic school ceased in the Exile. He then presents evidence that suggests that the Deuteronomic redactions of the Deuteronomic History and Jeremiah continued into the postexilic period. this evidence is of two types: (1) Deuteronomic phraseology in the postexilic additions found in the MT and (2) the themes of return and restoratin as vaticinia ex eventu. In Part II, the conclusion that the Detueronomic school continued in the postexilic period is bolstered with additional evidence in the form of Deuteronomic phraseology in the redactional material of Second Zechariah. adapting the methodology applied by J Philip Hyatt and others to Jeremiah, Person argues that Zechariah was redacted by the Deuteronomic school with the addition of the Deuteronomic prose in Zechariah 9-14. In Part III, Person comments on the possible social setting of the Deuteronomic school in postexilic Yehud as well as its theology in this setting.

Book excerpt: NEW STORIES IN THE GRAND SPACE FANTASY TRADITION! SCIENCE FICTION? FANTASY? IS IT TOO MUCH TO ASK FOR BOTH? The distant future—like the distant past—is a place of myths, of legends, and of great heroes. Cyborg knights battle extraterrestrial demons to rescue a peaceful village. A young girl unlocks an ancient power to protect her world from offworld colonists. Here are stories not where magic is science, but with magic and science. Not knights and castles, but knights and starships. Wizards and ray guns. Swords and planets. In D.J. Butler’s “Power and Prestige,” a pair of two-bit mercenaries are hired to solve a murder in a labyrinth beneath a crumbling city at the end of time. A young knight must face down an alien menace and awaken the power within in R.R. Virdi’s “A Knight Luminary,” and in “Saving the Emperor” Simon R. Green takes us deep into the Imperial City of Virimonde . . . and offers a glimpse at how the Deathstalker clan rose to power and fame. Enjoy tales from Tim Akers, Jessica Cluess, L.J. Hachmeister, Susan R. Matthews, T.C. McCarthy, Jody Lynn Nye, and Tom Toner; a new world from Warhammer 40,000 author Peter Fehervari; and a new chapter in the Sun Eater saga from Christopher Ruocchio. Contributors: Tim Akers D.J.
