Book excerpt: The story of Klimt’s astonishing artistic career is told in this beautifully produced collection of reproductions, photographs and drawings with an accompanying text that places the artist in a unique historical moment and reflects his fierce appetite for life and beauty. Gustav Klimt’s career straddled the last gasps of Vienna’s golden age and the birth of modernism. When seen through this bifurcated lens, it is easy to understand why his relatively small oeuvre created such a lasting impact. This gorgeously illustrated biography explores the unique environment in which Klimt worked—a society in which the schooling of artists was both appreciated and encouraged; a city that was pouring money into magnificently ornate architecture and portraiture; a population that was both experimenting with and suppressing freedom of thought. The full breadth of Klimt’s accomplishments is represented here—history and symbolist paintings, building decorations, murals, posters, magazine illustrations, portraits, and landscapes. Readers will learn how Klimt navigated the complex architecture of fin-de-siècle Vienna and helped found the Vienna Secession and they will see how Klimt’s style and motifs changed extensively through the years. Dozens of key works allow for close inspection of Klimt's dazzling artistry, his profound appreciation of female sensuality and his brilliant application of color and mosaic. The author draws out the importance of the relation between the plane surfaces of Klimt’s paintings and the spaces they represent, thereby raising surprising connections between his painting and his skills in the applied arts. Compact and satisfying, this book traces a singular artist’s trajectory across an ever-changing cultural landscape.

Book excerpt: The prince of decadence: Looking at Klimt in a whole new light: a groundbreaking monograph The countless events being held to celebrate the 150th anniversary of his birth make a clear statement to the enduring appreciation for the work of Gustav Klimt. Not that it takes such a special occasion for the press and the public to start talking about Klimt. More than two hundred articles about the artist appeared online in August 2011 alone, in comparison with barely seventy on Rembrandt within the same period. This media publicity set editor Tobias G. Natter thinking about the value of compiling the present book. During his lifetime, Klimt was a controversial star whose works made passions run high; he stood for Modernism but he also embodied tradition. His pictures polarized and divided the art-loving world. Journalists and general public alike were split over the question: For or against Klimt? The present publication therefore places particular emphasis upon the voices of Klimt's contemporaries via a series of essays examining reactions to his work throughout his career. Subjects range from Klimt's portrayal of women to his adoption of landscape painting in the second half of his life. The cliché that Gustav Klimt was a man of few words who rarely put pen to paper is vehemently dispelled: no less than 179 letters, cards, writings and other documents are included in this monograph. This wealth of archival material, assembled here for the first time on such a scale, represents a major contribution to Klimt scholarship. Defining features of this edition: Catalog of Klimt's complete paintings All known letter correspondence Featuring new photographs of the Stoclet Frieze commissioned exclusively for this book Contributing authors: Evelyn Benesch, Marian Bisanz-Prakken, Rainald Franz, Anette Freytag, Christoph Grunenberg, Hansjörg Krug, Susanna Partsch, Angelina Pötschner and Michaela Reichel

Book excerpt: The "breathtakingly brilliant" novel by the author of Infinite Jest (New York Times) is a deeply compelling and satisfying story, as hilarious and fearless and original as anything Wallace ever wrote. The agents at the IRS Regional Examination Center in Peoria, Illinois, appear ordinary enough to newly arrived trainee David Foster Wallace. But as he immerses himself in a routine so tedious and repetitive that new employees receive boredom-survival training, he learns of the extraordinary variety of personalities drawn to this strange calling. And he has arrived at a moment when forces within the IRS are plotting to eliminate even what little humanity and dignity the work still has. The Pale King remained unfinished at the time of David Foster Wallace's death, but it is a deeply compelling and satisfying novel, hilarious and fearless and as original as anything Wallace ever undertook. It grapples directly with ultimate questions -- questions of life's meaning and of the value of work and society -- through characters imagined with the interior force and generosity that were Wallace's unique gifts. Along the way it suggests a new idea of heroism and commands infinite respect for one of the most daring writers of our time. "The Pale King is by turns funny, shrewd, suspenseful, piercing, smart, terrifying, and rousing." --Laura Miller, Salon

Book excerpt: This visually stunning collection of all Klimt's landscape paintings and drawings brings to light a little-known aspect of the Viennese painter's oeuvre, proving that his mastery extends beyond portraiture, and revealing themes that appeared throughout his life's work. While Klimt is largely revered for his opulent, symbol-laden portraits of the Viennese bourgeoisie, these works were just one aspect of his artistic expression. Klimt's landscapes represent an important facet of his career, and are a valuable contribution to the school of European nature painting. For many years the artist traveled to the Austrian and Italian countryside during the summer, where he took advantage of the extraordinary light and spectacular hues. Among the most exquisite of Klimt's landscapes are those in which he experimented with composition and style; many of them reveal the influence of his contemporaries. Accompanied by essays from scholars, the images reproduced in this book comprise all extant landscapes from this brilliant artist which, though few in number, are made even more valuable by their scarcity.

Thanks for looking, The smART bookx design team About Gustav Klimt, The Kiss & Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I Gustav Klimt was an Austrian Modernist & Symbolist painter. Symbolism is a disparate artistic movement, a philosophy rather than an artistic style, in which the artist uses emblems to convey meaning. These emblems are often intensely personal making the resulting works difficult to interpret. In the case of Gustav Klimt this difficulty is compounded by the fact that he spoke very little publically about the motives behind his art. Klimt's art had such a heavy focus on the female form it is not surprising that, at times, he pushed the boundaries of public opinion. However, generally speaking he received much acclaim & financial success particularly at the pinnacle of his career—his Golden Phase— during which he created the two paintings on this notebook: The Kiss & Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I. During Klimt's Golden Phase he would combine oil paint with layer upon layer of gold leaf intentionally leaving the surface flat to concentrate the viewer's eye on the luster of gold. The result is an effect reminiscent of Byzantine art. It exudes opulence & is consequently as popular today as ever. (Adele Bloch-Bauer I sold for $135 million in 2006.) The Kiss The Kiss is possibly the most famous painting by Gustav Klimt. It depicts two lovers united in an embrace; the woman is almost entirely cocooned by the man's arms which cushion her with soft swirling curls, no doubt inspired by The Arts & Crafts movement & similar to those in other popular works by Klimt. The man, in contrast, is comprised of strong Art Nouveau linear elements. This symbol of a man & a woman embracing is a commonly repeated motif in work by Klimt which begs the question—what is it about The Kiss which makes it so popular? Perhaps it is due to its almost pure portrayal of happiness. Usually in a Klimt the lovers represent the privilege of youth & elsewhere in the painting there are threats to that love, such as age, hatred, envy or death. The lovers in The Kiss are, however, not completely immune from peril. In the full sized painting (our notebook is a detail) the woman's feet hang over an abyss, symbolizing the impending doom that awaits her. Unsurprisingly there has been much debate about the identity of the model for The Kiss. Some have suggested that it might be a portrayal of him and his life-long platonic companion, Emilie Louise Flöge, as lovers. It is more likely that it was no single woman in particular. Adele Bloch-Bauer I On the back cover of our notebook is the first of two portraits of Adele, who was the wife of the wealthy industrialist Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer. Klimt painted this at the pinnacle of his Golden Phase. It was confiscated by the Nazis but in recent years has been returned to, and sold by, the family. Ever meticulous in his work, the work on Adele Bloch-Bauer's portraits took Klimt 7 years to complete—Klimt was having an affair with Adele at the time so he hardly had an incentive to finish it swiftly.

Book excerpt: As inviting and sensual as a warm summer day, this opulent exhibition catalog offers a deep appreciation of Klimt's ornate, exquisitely detailed, and atmospheric landscape paintings. For the last twenty years of his career, Gustav Klimt devoted considerable energy to painting landscapes during his summer vacations--and these bucolic scenes became some of his most sought-after pictures. Filled with vibrant high-quality reproductions and featuring engaging essays by leading scholars in the field, this exhibition catalog situates Klimt's landscapes alongside fin-de-siècle fashion, photography, and decorative arts of the Wiener Werkstätte in particular. Klimt's landscapes are examined within the context of his larger oeuvre and traces the evolution of his style: from one informed by the academic tradition, to his ornate "golden style" decorative approach influenced by the ideal of the Gesamtkunstwerk, and then to a more painterly manner of working in pure color. The book also considers Klimt's relationship with his muse, fashion designer Emilie Flöge; his deep engagement with the Viennese avant-garde; and the specific techniques he employed to achieve mesmerizing, harmonious works that literally shimmer with light and color.

Austrian painter Wilhelm List (1864-1918) co-founded the Vienna Secession with renowned artist Gustav Klimt (1862-1918). His artwork was a mixture of portraits, landscapes and genre paintings, often with mythological subjects. Charles Caryl Coleman (1840-1928) was an American artist who spent time in Paris and Italy and whose large-scale still lifes reveal his ability to mix elements from different styles and cultures. Robert John Thornton (1768-1837) was an English physician and botanist. His Temple of Flora (part III of his New Illustration of the Sexual System of Carolus von Linnaeus) featured beautiful floral engravings from Dutch-style paintings mostly by Philip Reinagle (1749-1833) .
