Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered what your cat is saying? Cats do not meow randomly, nor do they growl or hiss because they have nothing better to do. Cat sounds have a purpose, and they can carry important messages, whether for us or other cats. Susanne Schötz is hard at work on breaking the cat code. She is a professor at Lund University in Sweden, where a long-standing research program is proving that cats do actually use vocal communication—with each other and with their human caretakers. Understanding the vocal strategies used in human-cat communication will have profound implications for how we communicate with our pets, and has the potential to improve the relationship between animals and humans within several fields, including animal therapy, veterinary medicine and animal sheltering. In The Secret Language of Cats, Schötz offers a crash course in the phonetic study of cat sounds. She introduces us to the full range of feline vocalizations and explains what they can mean in different situations, and she gives practical tips to help us understand our cats better.

Book excerpt: Kitty Piper, Angel Cat, is a loving story about a kitty who talks as we humans do. She is a little angel so she knows lots more than she has one believe she does. When she comes to live with her new Mommy, Mary, she makes friends easily. Audrey becomes her best friend. One day when she goes to play with Audrey, she finds out that Audrey had a horrible accident; someone ran over her. Audrey is in the pet hospital, barely alive. She helps Audrey's Mom, Mrs. Brown, throughout the entire trauma, not knowing whether Audrey will make it or not. Kitty Piper never wavers from her belief that Audrey will make it. Ktty Piper knows who ran over Audrey. She seeks out her mentor, Harlan, a man in his seventies, to tell him. Kitty Piper shows Harlan what she believes to be evidence. Harlan takes it to the police. Meanwhile, Kitty Piper prays to our Divine God so that Audrey would live. Her prayers are being answered as the veterinarian tells Mrs. Brown that Audrey is off the respirator and breathing on her own, and her internal bleeding stopped. In several days Audrey will be able to go home. It was a Sunday when Audrey was discharged from the pet hospital. Before going to pick up Audrey, Mrs. Brown, Harlan, Kitty Piper, and Mary, all went to Church. The man who ran over Audrey, Wilbur, was marched into the church with a police officer, and Wilbur told Audrey's mom and the parishioners how sorry he was for doing what he did. Audrey came home and after physical therapy for a long time, she was able to walk and then even run once again. Kitty Piper, our little angel, was so happy she had her best friend back totally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thesis of this book is that repetition is central to Tolstoy's art. The author argues that Tolstoy uses this device—or rather, complex of devices—to represent and examine the processes by which people structure and give meaning to their experience. Repetition is shown to be essential to his style, to his understanding of characters' psychology, to the structure of his work, and to his interaction with readers. In short, it defines much of what is "Tolstoyan" about Tolstoy. Following a discussion of the epistemological and psychological beliefs that shape Tolstoy's use of repetition, the author explores the effects and implications of repeated verbal elements as they function in the discourse of characters and narrators. She develops a concept of "novels of length," which are distinguished from ordinary "long novels" in that length is essential to their themes and purposes. A complex dynamic of memory, forgetting, and reminders (repetition) structures both the characters' evolving identities and the readers' changing apprehension of the text. The author next discusses Tolstoy's use of repetition to shape relationships among characters, and considers the connection between these relationships and thematic development in his novels. She concludes by exploring the intertextual repetitions in Tolstoy's oeuvre, which are seen as part of a process by which allusions among works create a revealing sense of the author's developing career. In examining the link between Tolstoy's repeated verbal elements and his broader concepts of structure and meaning, the book combines close readings of key passages in the novels with an exploration of larger theoretical issues: the dynamics of reading and sense-making, the ethics and aesthetics of memory, and the function of language as a system of cognition and communication. As a result, the book contributes not only to studies of Tolstoy and the genre of the novel but to our understanding of the relations among rhetorical, cognitive, aesthetic, and ethical aspects of great art generally.
