Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from King Alcohol Dethroned The dethronement of King Alcohol which is being accomplished in our time is perhaps the most important moral event in the history of mankind. Alcohol is the most ancient king in the world. An Arabian story tells of his presence as far back as the beginning of the race, as the conqueror of Satan who mastered our first parents. This is the story: Satan with the help of sin and death made a bridge from hell to earth. On his first trip across it he visited the Garden of Eden. Among other things he found growing a grape vine bearing luscious innocent fruit. He immediately began its cultivation to see if he could get a product from it that would hurt and destroy the race just started. He first poured the blood of a peacock down on the roots; when the leaves came out, he watered the vine with the blood of an ape, then he soaked the roots with the blood of a lion. He drank to his fill of the fruit of this innocent plant thus brutalized, and lay down among its leaves like a hog. The Arab imagination thus made King Alcohol the conqueror of Satan in the very garden where he himself was the master. Book Synopsis Bootleggers and Beer Barons of the Prohibition Era by : J. Anne Funderburg
Download or read book Bootleggers and Beer Barons of the Prohibition Era written by J. Anne Funderburg and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is an accurate, wide-ranging, and entertaining account of the illegal liquor traffic during the Prohibition Era (1920 to 1933). Based on FBI files, legal documents, old newspapers and other sources, it offers a coast-to-coast survey of Volstead crime--outrageous stories of America's most notorious liquor lords, including Al Capone and Dutch Schultz. Readers will find the lesser known Volstead outlaws to be as fascinating as their more famous counterparts. The riveting tales of Max Hassel, Waxy Gordon, Roy Olmstead, the Purple Gang, the Havre Bunch, and the Capitol Hill Bootlegger will be new to most readers. Likewise, the exploits of women bootleggers and flying bootleggers are unknown to most Americans. Books about Prohibition usually note that Canadian liquor exporters abetted the U.S. bootleggers, but they fail to go into detail. Bootleggers and Beer Barons examines the major cross-border routes for smuggling liquor from Canada into the U.S.: Quebec to Vermont and New York, Ontario to Michigan, Saskatchewan to Montana, and British Columbia to Washington.

Book Synopsis Absinthe--The Cocaine of the Nineteenth Century by : Doris Lanier
Download or read book Absinthe--The Cocaine of the Nineteenth Century written by Doris Lanier and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-12-09 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an alcohol content sometimes as high as 80 percent, absinthe was made by mixing the leaves of wormwood with other plants such as angelica root, fennel, coriander, hyssop, marjoram and anise for flavor. The result was a bitter, potent drink that became a major social, medical and political phenomenon during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; its popularity was mainly in France, but also in other parts of Europe and the United States, particularly in New Orleans. Absinthe produced a sense of euphoria and a heightening of the senses, similar to the effect of cocaine and opium, but was addictive and caused a rapid loss of mental and physical faculties. Despite that, Picasso, Manet, Rimbaud, Van Gogh, Degas and Wilde were among those devoted to its consumption and produced writings and art influenced by the drink. This work provides a history of "the green fairy", a study of its use and abuse, an exploration of the tremendous social problems (not unlike the cocaine problems of this century) it caused, and an examination of the extent to which the lives of talented young writers and artists of the period became caught up in the absinthe craze.

Book excerpt: "A droll, delightful taradiddle of tales, anecdotes, and facts about the consuption of liquor in America, and who did what to block that booze from the Rock called Plymouth to the 'rock' called Prohibition. Chidsey, who has written many books, has seldom hit the hilarity gong as he has in this one; and under his wit and irony lurks a serious intent that is just relevant enough to ponder when the fun's over..." -- Publishers Weekly

Book Synopsis Mississippi Moonshine Politics by : Janice Branch Tracy
Download or read book Mississippi Moonshine Politics written by Janice Branch Tracy and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017-07-24 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Mississippi historian chronicles the rise and fall of The Magnolia State’s moonshine empire in this revealing true crime history. For most states, the repeal of prohibition meant a return to legally drunken normalcy, but not so in Mississippi. The state had gone dry more than a decade before the rest of the nation. In that time, a lucrative black market for moonshine and bonded liquor became a way of life for many Mississippians. By the time Prohibition was lifted, bootleggers and state politicians were unwilling to give up their hold on the sale of alcohol. For nearly sixty years, Mississippi was known as the "wettest dry state in the country." Until statewide prohibition was finally repealed in 1966, illegal booze fueled a corrupt political machine that intimidated journalists who dared to speak against it and fixed juries that threatened its interests. Author and native Mississippian Janice Branch Tracy offers an intimate and authoritative look inside Mississippi Moonshine Politics.
