Per Modem klinkt er sich ein in die globalen Netze. Hin und wieder plaudert er mit Gleichgesinnten in den USA und Singapur, ‚chatten‘ nennt die Szene diesen elektronischen Kaffeeklatsch. Die Netz-Surfer sind losgelöst von der Welt...“(2) Das Internet soll das Medium der Zukunft sein. Unaufhaltsam soll es sich in aller Welt ausbreiten. Doch wird es von der Bevölkerung in gleich starkem Maße als Unterhaltungs- und Informationsmedium genutzt und akzeptiert werden? Seit Oktober 1999 erhöhte sich die Zahl der Online-Nutzer in Deutschland um knapp zwei Drittel. Zu diesem Ergebnis kam das Unternehmen MMXI(3). Im August 2000 verbrachten knapp neun Millionen Menschen rund 58 Millionen Stunden im Netz. Das entspricht einer Steigerung von 121% gegenüber dem Vorjahr. Mit der steigenden Besucherzahl änderte sich auch die Nutzerschaft. 68% aller erwachsenen Besucher sind männlich, jedoch hat sich die Zielgruppe der weiblichen Surfer im Alter von 14 bis 29 Jahren seit Herbst 1999 auf 1,2 Millionen fast verdoppelt. Fakt ist jedoch, daß das Internet zum größten Teil von Höhergebildeten genutzt wird. Der Anteil der Gymnasial- und Universitätsabsolventen liegt bei 12 bzw. 19 %, während die Haupt- und Realschulabsolventen nur mit 1-2 % vertreten sind. Die typischen Internetuser sind auch nicht die 14- bis 17jährigen (7%), sondern eher die jungen Erwachsenen im Alter von 20 bis 24 Jahren. Obwohl mehr und mehr Menschen das Internet gebrauchen, ist es noch kein tagtäglich genutztes Medium. Die Nutzung des Internets in Deutschland ist insgesamt eher der jungen Generation vorbehalten.
