Book excerpt: KILLING INNOCENCE, the second installment in Merit Clark's award-winning Denver-based mysteries, takes homicide detective Jack Fariel deep into the world of human trafficking. "How could four young women simply disappear? One similarity between them-girls no one cared about, no one would look for, no one would miss. Perfect prey." What if a church was a front for human trafficking? A minister with deadly secrets. A brutal zealot for hire. A sadistic manipulative millionaire. And dead girls discarded in Denver's back alleys. Detective Jack Fariel has more bodies than leads or time. When his homicide investigation uncovers a sex trafficking ring, Jack realizes he's not up against a single murderer, but a criminal network with ties to the Middle East. Vulnerable, undocumented immigrant girls think they've found safe harbor at a church not realizing they've landed in the grips of a corrupt minister willing to sell them into servitude or sex work for the right price. As girls start dying, it takes all of Jack's skill and experience to stop the trafficking and stay alive himself. As he gets closer to the truth, the detective is hunted by an adversary with no remorse, no conscience, no hesitation. But Jack won't let these young innocents down. He'll stop the trafficking even if it costs him his life.

Book Synopsis Women Criminals [2 volumes] by : Vickie Jensen
Download or read book Women Criminals [2 volumes] written by Vickie Jensen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-11-10 with total page 769 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique, two-volume study that examines female crime and the women who commit it. The two-volume Women Criminals: An Encyclopedia of People and Issues addresses both key topics and key figures in women's crime. The first volume provides topical essays about areas critical to the understanding of female criminals, such as the definition of women's crime, explanations of women's criminality, ethnic and age diversity in female criminals, and responses of the criminal justice system. The second volume comprises biographical entries profiling women who are obviously criminals, such as Aileen Wuornos and Myra Hindley, and also women who were victims of circumstance, unjust laws, or narrowly applied definitions of crime, such as Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, and Sophie Scholl. In addition to highlighting the breadth of women's criminality, these portraits provide a holistic, multifaceted understanding of the dynamics of women's crime and why it occurs, connecting the individual stories to the larger social-scientific perspectives. Care has been taken to include the women's own voices and perspectives where possible and to address the intentions and reasoning of the system that responded to their criminality.

Download or read book Out in Time written by Perry N. Halkitis and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The civil rights of LGBTQ people have slowly yet steadily strengthened since the Stonewall Riots of June, 1969. Despite enormous opposition from some political segments and the catastrophic effects of the AIDS crisis, the last five decades have witnessed improvement in the conditions of the lives of LGBTQ individuals in the United States. As such, the realities and challenges faced by a young gay man coming of age and coming out in the 1960s is, in many profound ways, different from the experiences of a young gay man coming of age and coming out today. Out in Time explores the life experiences of three generations of gay men --the Stonewall, AIDS, and Queer generations-- arguing that while there are generational differences in the lived experiences of young gay men, each one confronts its own unique historical events, realities, and socio-political conditions, there are consistencies across time that define and unify the identity formation of gay men. Guided by the vast research literature on gay identity formation and coming out, the ideas and themes explored here are seen through the oral histories of a diverse set of fifteen gay men, five from each generation. Out in Time demonstrates how early life challenges define and shape the life courses of gay men, demarcating both the specific time-bound challenges encountered by each generation, and the universal challenges encountered by gay men coming of age across all generations and the conditions that define their lives.

Book Synopsis Chimpanzees, War, and History by : R. Brian Ferguson
Download or read book Chimpanzees, War, and History written by R. Brian Ferguson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-20 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of whether men are predisposed to war runs hot in contemporary scholarship and online discussion. Within this debate, chimpanzee behavior is often cited to explain humans' propensity for violence; the claim is that male chimpanzees kill outsiders because they are evolutionarily inclined, suggesting to some that people are too. The longstanding critique that killing is instead due to human disturbance has been pronounced dead and buried. In Chimpanzees, War, and History, R. Brian Ferguson challenges this consensus. By historically contextualizing every reported chimpanzee killing, Ferguson offers and empirically substantiates two hypotheses. Primarily, he provides detailed demonstration of the connection between human impact and intergroup killing of adult chimpanzees. Secondarily, he argues that killings within social groups reflect status conflicts, display violence against defenseless individuals, and payback killings of fallen status bullies. Ferguson also explains broad chimpanzee-bonobo differences in violence through constructed and transmitted social organizations consistent with new perspectives in evolutionary theory. He deconstructs efforts to illuminate human warfare via chimpanzee analogy, and provides an alternative anthropological theory grounded in Pan-human contrasts that is applicable to different types of warfare. Bringing readers on a journey through theoretical struggle and clashing ideas about chimpanzees, bonobos, and evolution, Ferguson opens new ground on the age-old question--are men born to kill?
