Book Synopsis Killer Clothes by : Anna Maria Clement
Download or read book Killer Clothes written by Anna Maria Clement and published by Book Publishing Company. This book was released on 2011-11-04 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How Seemingly Innocent Clothing Choices Endanger Your Health...and how to protect yourself! This book reveals in unprecedented detail the toxic truth about the clothes we wear and the surprising number of harmful effects on our health caused by garments once considered safe. Readers will learn what fabrics and chemicals to watch for when selecting clothing, why to avoid any garment that has anti-odor, antistatic, antimicrobial, etc., along with tips for ecological and health-friendly cleaning, and the advantages for choosing natural fabrics. They'll also learn the many ways that synthetic clothing, chemicals added to garments, and tight clothing and tight shoes create dangerous problems for human health and the environment. Dr. Anna Maria Clement and her husband, Dr. Brian Clement, document numerous medical studies that show the rise in health problems that has paralleled the increased use of synthetic clothing fibers. Readers will learn which fabrics and clothes contribute to breast cancer, infertility, and a range of diseases, and which garments are safe to wear. Based on medical science, these studies have been brought together for the first time in one place; important findings which have, for too long, been hidden from public awareness.
Book Synopsis Killer Fandom: Fan Studies and the Celebrity Serial Killer by : Judith May Fathallah
Download or read book Killer Fandom: Fan Studies and the Celebrity Serial Killer written by Judith May Fathallah and published by mediastudies.press. This book was released on 2023-11-06 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Killer Fandom is the first long-form treatment of serial killer fandom. Fan studies have mostly ignored this most moralized form of fandom, as a stigmatized Bad Other in implicit tension with the field’s successful campaign to recuperate the broader fan category. Yet serial killer fandom, as Judith May Fathallah shows in the book, can be usefully studied with many of the field’s leading analytic frameworks. After tracing the pre-digital history of fans, mediated celebrity, and killers, Fathallah examines contemporary fandom through the lens of textual poaching, affective community, subcultural capital, and play. With close readings of fan posts, comments, and mashups on Tumblr, TikTok, and YouTube, alongside documentaries, podcasts, and a thriving “murderabilia” industry, Killer Fandom argues that this fan culture is, in many ways, hard to distinguish from more “mainstream” fandoms. Fan creations around Aileen Wuornos, Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, and Richard Ramirez, among others, demonstrate a complex and shifting stance toward their objects—marked by parodic humor and irony in many cases. Killer Fandom ultimately questions—given our crime-and violence-saturated media culture—whether it makes sense to set Dahmer and Wuornos “fans” apart from the rest of us.

Book Synopsis The Little Old Lady Killer by : Susana Vargas Cervantes
Download or read book The Little Old Lady Killer written by Susana Vargas Cervantes and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2019-08-20 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The surprising true story of Mexico’s hunt, arrest, and conviction of its first female serial killer For three years, amid widespread public outrage, police in Mexico City struggled to uncover the identity of the killer responsible for the ghastly deaths of forty elderly women, many of whom had been strangled in their homes with a stethoscope by someone posing as a government nurse. When Juana Barraza Samperio, a female professional wrestler known as la Dama del Silencio (the Lady of Silence), was arrested—and eventually sentenced to 759 years in prison—for her crimes as the Mataviejitas (the little old lady killer), her case disrupted traditional narratives about gender, criminality, and victimhood in the popular and criminological imagination. Marshaling ten years of research, and one of the only interviews that Juana Barraza Samperio has given while in prison, Susana Vargas Cervantes deconstructs this uniquely provocative story. She focuses, in particular, on the complex, gendered aspects of the case, asking: Who is a killer? Barraza—with her “manly” features and strength, her career as a masked wrestler in lucha libre, and her violent crimes—is presented, here, as a study in gender deviance, a disruption of what scholars call mexicanidad, or the masculine notion of what it means to be Mexican. Cervantes also challenges our conception of victimhood—specifically, who “counts” as a victim. The Little Old Lady Killer presents a fascinating analysis of what serial killing—often considered “killing for the pleasure of killing”—represents to us.
