Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Thanksgiving Day 2007, as the country teeters on the brink of a recession, three generations of the Olson family gather. Eleanor and Gavin worry about their daughter, a single academic, and her newly adopted Indian child, and about their son, who has been caught in the imploding real-estate bubble. While the Olsons navigate the tensions and secrets that mark their relationships, seventeen-year-old Kijo Jackson and his best friend Spider set out from the nearby housing projects on a mysterious job. A series of tragic events bring these two worlds ever closer, exposing the dangerously thin line between suburban privilege and urban poverty, and culminating in a crime that will change everyone’s life. In her gripping new book, Jennifer Vanderbes masterfully lays bare the fraught lives of this complex cast of characters and the lengths to which they will go to protect their families. Strangers at the Feast is at once a heartbreaking portrait of a family struggling to find happiness and an exploration of the hidden costs of the American dream. Published to international acclaim, Jennifer Vanderbes’s first book, Easter Island, was hailed as “one of those rare novels that appeals equally to heart, mind, and soul,” by the San Francisco Chronicle. In her second novel, this powerful writer reaches new heights of storytelling. This page-turner wrestles with the most important issues of our time—race, class, and above all else, family. Strangers at the Feast will leave readers haunted and deeply affected.
Book Synopsis The Uses of Memory by : Timothy J. Van Compernolle
Download or read book The Uses of Memory written by Timothy J. Van Compernolle and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-03-23 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The pioneering writer Higuchi Ichiyō (1872–1896) has been described as “the last woman of old Japan,” a consummate stylist of classical prose, whose command of the linguistic and rhetorical riches of the premodern tradition might suggest that her writings are relics of the past with no concern for the problems of modern life.Timothy Van Compernolle investigates the social dimensions of Ichiyō’s artistic imagination and argues that she creatively reworked the Japanese literary tradition in order to understand, confront, and critique the emerging modernity of the Meiji period. For Ichiyō, the classical canon was a reservoir of tropes and paradigms that could be reshaped and renewed as a way to explore the sociopolitical transformations of the 1890s and cast light upon the human costs of modernization.Drawing critical momentum from the dialogical theory of Mikhail Bakhtin, the author explores in five of Ichiyō’s best known stories how traditional rhetoric and literary devices are dialogically engaged with discourses associated with modernity within the pages of Ichiyō’s narratives. In its close, sensitive readings of Ichiyō’s oeuvre, The Uses of Memory not only complicates the scholarly discussion of her position in the Japanese literary canon, but also broaches larger theoretical issues."

But the Water of Kazue’s soul has joined forces with Hisato, helping him grow his hybrid army. And even more troubling, she claims to be Kazue’s reincarnation. Kaito’s enemies are trying to destabilize his reformed kingdom. And to make matters worse, the woman he loves thinks he’s hung up on his past. Kazue’s reincarnation has complicated his life, in more ways than one. He and Suzume need to be united in their fight against Hisato. While they squabble, Hisato’s grip tightens on Akatsuki and his influence reaches farther. They have to defeat Hisato before his monstrous army grows too powerful and conquers all of Akatsuki. Sealing Hisato requires resonance between all four fragments of Kazue’s soul. To defeat against Hisato, they have to capture the water of Kazue’s soul first. But when one of their own betrays them, it turns all their plans upside down. As anarchy consumes Akatsuki, their last hope lies in the flames of vengeance burning in Suzume’s heart. But is she alone enough to defeat the darkness?
Book Synopsis Recent Advances in Density Functional Methods by : Delano Pun Chong
Download or read book Recent Advances in Density Functional Methods written by Delano Pun Chong and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1995 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all the different areas in computational chemistry, density functional theory (DFT) enjoys the most rapid development. Even at the level of the local density approximation (LDA), which is computationally less demanding, DFT can usually provide better answers than Hartree-Fock formalism for large systems such as clusters and solids. For atoms and molecules, the results from DFT often rival those obtained by ab initio quantum chemistry, partly because larger basis sets can be used. Such encouraging results have in turn stimulated workers to further investigate the formal theory as well as the computational methodology of DFT.This volume contains ten contributions from active workers in DFT, covering topics from basic principles to methodology to applications. In the Foreword, Prof Walter Kohn gives his perspective on the recent advances in DFT. Because DFT is being developed in so many different directions, no single volume can provide a complete review of DFT. However, this volume will help both beginners and experimentalists to read the growing DFT literature more easily.
Book Synopsis The Jarawara Language of Southern Amazonia by : R. M. W. Dixon
Download or read book The Jarawara Language of Southern Amazonia written by R. M. W. Dixon and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2004-10-07 with total page 661 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first account of Jarawara, a Southern Amazonia language of great complexity and unusual interest, and now spoken by less than two hundred people. It has only two open lexical classes, noun and verb, and a closed adjective class with fourteen members which can only modify a noun. Verbs have a complex structure with three prefix and some twenty-five suffix slots. There is an eleven-term tense-modal system with an evidentiality contrast (eyewitness/non-eyewitness) in the three past tenses. Of the two genders, feminine and masculine, feminine is unmarked. There are at least eight types of subordinate clause constructions, including complement clauses, relative clauses, coreferential dependent clauses, and 'when', 'if', 'due to the lack of' and 'because of' clauses. There are only eleven consonants and four vowels but an extensive set of ordered phonological rules of lenition, vowel assimilation and unstressed syllable omission. There are four imperative inflections (with different meanings) and three explicit interrogative suffixes within the mood system. The book is entirely based on field work by the authors.
