This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here we have a useful and very important book for every library. The increased use of the story hour in work with children and the ever widening use of fables and myths in school work have made the need of this index so real, it seems as if the only notice this book needs, is the announcement by title of its publication. Still we may give a short account of what it contains. It includes Fairy tales, Fables, Stories from Greek and Norse mythology which are most frequently called for, Hero stories, and such modern stories as "Leak in the dyke," which, though not strictly fairy tale or legend, are constantly asked for by teachers and story-tellers. The book is a title index, with cross references from variant titles to that best known, or most descriptive. Cross references from one story to another are given to aid story-tellers by suggesting similar stories in case the one wished for is not obtainable. There are also references from subjects - holidays, stars, etc., - to aid in identifying stories of which the title has been forgotten. The indexing of the stories in the various editions of Grimm, Andersen, and Æsop is worked out well, showing the variation of titles, and the edition. Titles marked with an asterisk (*) are suitable for small children. The book has at the end a list of the books analyzed - nearly five hundred in all, arranged by authors. -Bulletin of Bibliography and Dramatic Index, Vol.8 Title index to fairy tales and fables, the most popular stories from Greek and Norse mythology, and a few modern stories, which, though not strictly fairy tale or legend, are constantly in demand; with cross references from variant titles to those best known or most descriptive, and subject references. Versions suitable for small children are starred. Contains a list of the books wholly or partly analyzed, about five hundred. -A.L.A. Booklist, Vol. 2 The annotation is intended to give a clue to the identification of the story- more necessary, perhaps, with the simpler tales in the dramatic readers, since the play titles are frequently unlike those of the fairy tales and fables from which they are adapted. Additional help in finding certain stories may be found in Mary Huse Eastman's Index to fairy tales, myths and legends, which indicates variants of the same story. -Plays for Children

This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is actually two books in one volume: "Myths Every Child Should Know" and "Legends Every Child Should Know." Both books are compilations of important myths and legends that have been passed down from storyteller to storyteller for thousands of years, and hold stories that, literally, every child should know. As your child grows older, he or she will constantly run into references to characters, items, and situations present in these stories. Things like "the Midas touch" turning everything to gold, being a Rip Van Winkle and missing things everyone else knows about, or any reference to Pandora's box. * * * * While these stories vary greatly in details; they fit every climate and wear the peculiar dress of every country; it is easy to see that they are made up of the same materials, and they describe the same persons or ideas or things whether they are told in Greece or India or Norway or Brittany. Wherever they are found they make it certain that they come from a very remote time and grew out of ideas or feelings and ways of looking at the world which a great many men shared in common in many places. These stories were selected by H.W. Mabie because they throw light on the mind and character of the ages that produced them; they are part of the history of the unfolding of the human mind in the world; and, above all, they are interesting. * * * * Myths are highly imaginative and poetic explanations of the world - and of the life of man in it - at a time when scientific knowledge and habits of thought didn't exist. "Myths Every Child Should Know" contains 16 stories: The Three Golden Apples, The Pomegranate Seeds, The Chimaera, The Miraculous Pitcher, The Golden Touch, The Gorgon's Head, The Dragon's Teeth, The Paradise of Children, The Cyclops, The Argonauts, The Giant Builder, How Odin Lost His Eye, The Quest of the Hammer, The Apples of Idun, The Death of Balder, and The Star and the Lily. * * * * Legends, on the other hand, have some slight historical basis, are cast in narrative form, and told as a record of fact. They deal with incidents in the lives of holy men, places made sacred by association with holy men, or deal with some popular type of character like Robin Hood or Rip Van Winkle. "Legends Every Child Should Know" contains 19 stories: Wigwam Legend of Hiawatha, Beowulf, Childe Horn, Sir Galahad, The Seven Sleepers of Ephesus, Rustem and Sohrab, Guy of Warwick, Chevy Chase, The Fate of the Children of Lir, The Beleaguered City, Prester John, The Wandering Jew, King Robert of Sicily, The Beato Torello Da Poppi, The Lorelei, The Passing of Arthur, Rip Van Winkle, The Gray Champion, and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. * * * * "Myths Every Child Should Know" and "Legends Every Child Should Know." were published in 1905 and 1906, respectively, and this volume contains the complete text in both books, as well as both frontispiece illustrations. * * * * Check our other Children's, Juvenile, and Adult books, and our Every Child Should Know Library, at www.FlyingChipmunkPublishing.com, or Like us on Facebook for our latest releases

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From lightning-wielding Zeus, the supreme Greek god, to protective Hathor, the Egyptian goddess of love - heroes, gods, and monsters are brought to life in these retellings of myths from around the world. Myths, Legends, and Sacred Stories is a children's book that invites you to explore all the well-known stories from Greek and Norse mythology, and a range of other cultures across more than 100 tales. Discover the fascinating myths of Anansi, the West African trickster god who takes the form of a spider; the story of the Wawilak Sisters of Arnhem Land in northern Australia, who form the land as they walk across it; or the Slavic tale of Ivan as he chases the mischievous Firebird. Read about ferocious, man-eating monsters such as the Minotaur and Fafnir the dragon, and the legendary heroes that fought them, like Theseus and Sigurd. Also included are the legends of Robin Hood, and of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, epics from Asia, such as the Mahabharata and Gilgamesh, and a host of tales from Aztec mythology and a range of other cultures. As well as offering the retellings themselves, Myths, Legends, and Sacred Stories- a children's encyclopedia investigates the meanings of these primal stories, examining why these tales have stood the test of time over thousands of years. Themed features draw together elements that are common to myths from all over the world, such as shapeshifters, mythical beasts, and magical weapons. Panels on modern retellings, such as Percy Jackson and The Little Mermaid, help to show why these myths are still relevant to our lives today.
