Book Synopsis Conceptual Structures at Work by : Karl Erich Wolff
Download or read book Conceptual Structures at Work written by Karl Erich Wolff and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-06-29 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains selected papers presented at the 12th International C- ference on Conceptual Structures, ICCS 2004, held in Huntsville Alabama, July 19–23, 2004. The main theme of the conference, “Conceptual Structures at Work”, was chosen to express our intention of applying conceptual structures for hum- centered practical purposes. That invites us to develop not only clear conceptual theories, butalsomethodstosupporthumansintheapplicationofthesetheories in their societies. Some promising steps in this direction are being taken, but the gap between the researchers working on a highly sophisticated level on one side and the practitioners in many ?elds of applications on the other side is usually di?culttobridge.Someofushaveexperiencesinsuchpracticalcooperation, but we need more members of our community to be engaged in “real life problems”. We all know that solutions of complex problems in practice require not only a well-developed formal theory, but also an understanding of the whole context of the given problems. To support our understanding we need general philo- phical methods as well as formal theories for the representation of fundamental structures in practice. We believe that our community has powerful tools and methodsforsuccessfulapplicationsinpractice, butthatwemustdevelopaforum to present our results to a broader audience. First we must understand the s- ni?cant developments in our own group, which has activities in many directions of research.

Book excerpt: “Introductory Discrete Mathematics” provides a thorough and understandable introduction to the basic ideas and methods of discrete mathematics. It is an invaluable resource for students, instructors, and professionals looking to establish a solid foundation in ideas critical to subjects such as computer science, engineering, cryptography, and operations research. The book is well-organized, beginning with an investigation of fundamental concepts like as sets, logic, and proving procedures. These early chapters establish the framework for comprehending more complex subjects like as combinatorics, graph theory, and discrete probability. Each idea is presented in a way that encourages understanding and retention, so readers can move through the material with confidence. “Introductory Discrete Mathematics” excels in concise explanations. Readers with different mathematical backgrounds may understand complex topics since they are simplified. Each topic has real-world examples to help readers understand its practicality. The book includes several exercises and challenges to reinforce and test knowledge. Readers may improve their grasp and confidence in using discrete mathematics to solve issues by doing these activities. In addition, “Introductory Discrete Mathematics” emphasises discrete mathematics’ practical applications in numerous domains. Using these principles to solve real-world problems, the book shows how discrete mathematics is relevant and important today.

Book Synopsis Ontology Engineering Applications in Healthcare and Workforce Management Systems by : David E Forbes
Download or read book Ontology Engineering Applications in Healthcare and Workforce Management Systems written by David E Forbes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-10 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking beyond the communications technology horizon and projecting future competency-specific employment demand, this book presents an evaluation of desirable information systems enhancements by integrating two disparate-domain computer ontologies. It provides readers a fresh solutions approach based on dynamic modeling and methodological contributions to philosophical and assistive communications system development in healthcare, addressing the need for both demand intelligence and practical work environment support. The pace of change in redefining occupation-specific employee resourcing needs is unrelenting and continues to accelerate. And the exponential growth in the demand for healthcare service delivery is correspondingly daunting. As such, the public and private sectors are faced with the challenge of sustaining credible relevant demand intelligence and recruitment practices, while integration, expansion and enrichment of ostensibly unconnected ontologies represent key R&D issues.

Book Synopsis Advances in Plan-Based Control of Robotic Agents by : Michael Beetz
Download or read book Advances in Plan-Based Control of Robotic Agents written by Michael Beetz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-08-02 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, autonomous robots, including Xavier, Martha [1], Rhino [2,3], Minerva, and Remote Agent, have shown impressive performance in long-term demonstrations. In NASA’s Deep Space program, for example, an - tonomous spacecraft controller, called the Remote Agent [5], has autonomously performed a scienti?c experiment in space. At Carnegie Mellon University, Xavier [6], another autonomous mobile robot, navigated through an o?ce - vironment for more than a year, allowing people to issue navigation commands and monitor their execution via the Internet. In 1998, Minerva [7] acted for 13 days as a museum tourguide in the Smithsonian Museum, and led several thousand people through an exhibition. These autonomous robots have in common that they rely on plan-based c- trol in order to achieve better problem-solving competence. In the plan-based approach, robots generate control actions by maintaining and executing a plan that is e?ective and has a high expected utility with respect to the robots’ c- rent goals and beliefs. Plans are robot control programs that a robot can not only execute but also reason about and manipulate [4]. Thus, a plan-based c- troller is able to manage and adapt the robot’s intended course of action — the plan — while executing it and can thereby better achieve complex and changing tasks.
