Book excerpt: Expressing the plight of Blindness, José Saramago quoted- The "white sickness" is a different kind of disease, it disables the infected without killing them. Blindness is a major health problem worldwide. It is a tragic, devastating condition both physically and mentally. Congenital blindness is by fate but acquired blindness due to lack of diagnosis is a mirror to the loophole of medical science. It contributes to the enormous burden of ill health in the developing world, where infectious diseases continue to be the major causes of morbidity and mortality. Corneal diseases are a major cause of blindness worldwide as a “silent epidemic”, second only to cataract in overall importance.1 Ocular trauma and corneal ulceration which are significant causes of corneal blindness, unfortunately underreported. It is estimated that 3-4 million people are blind due to corneal opacity. It is also estimated that 6.5 million people are effected with and 1.3 million new patients become blind due to corneal ulcer annually posing a major health problem for developing countries.2
