Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kennedy Family Records It is believed that all the foregoing Kennedy families are related either by virtue of being descendants of common ancestors, or by intermarriage. The Kennedys have been in America since the early 17th Century and it is estimated that there are now more than Kennedys in the United States. See Chapter (l). Many of the American Kennedys are descendants of Robert and William (brothers), who came from Ireland to Bucks County, Pennsylvania, 1730. Others are descendants of David Kennedy, of Butler County, Pa. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. From Irish Kings to indentured servants in Philadelphia, from pioneers in Minnesota to farmers on the plains of Kansas, my Kennedy family spread their name and their DNA throughout the world! Containing numerous photographs and graphics, this easy to read account of my family is of interest to the hundreds of Charles and Mary (Gillen) Kennedy descendants populating America and the globe as well as those interested in American history. The book begins with Kennedy Kings and castles in Ireland and continues with Charles and Mary in Philadelphia and then west to Cambria County, Pennsylvania with Catholic Russian Prince, Father Augustine Gallitzin. Oral accounts describe the 1862 Sioux massacre on their community in the Minnesota Territory. This ultimately drove them to Osage Mission, Kansas where my grandparents Lawrence and Elizabeth (Fager) Kennedy raised my mother Helen (Kennedy) Rush and their other 15 children through the depression and the dust bowl in Neosho County, Kansas.

Book excerpt: Death was merciful to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, for it spared her a parent's worst nightmare: the loss of a child. But if Jackie had lived to see her son, JFK Jr., perish in a plane crash on his way to his cousin's wedding, she would have been doubly horrified by the familiar pattern in the tragedy. Once again, on a day that should have been full of joy and celebration, America's first family was struck by the Kennedy Curse. In this probing expose, renowned Kennedy biographer Edward Klein--a bestselling author and journalist personally acquainted with many members of the Kennedy family--unravels one of the great mysteries of our time and explains why the Kennedys have been subjected to such a mind-boggling chain of calamities. Drawing upon scores of interviews with people who have never spoken out before, troves of private documents, archives in Ireland and America, and private conversations with Jackie, Klein explores the underlying pattern that governs the Kennedy Curse. The reader is treated to penetrating portraits of the Irish immigrant Patrick Kennedy; Rose Kennedy's father, "Honey Fitz"; the dynasty's founding father Joe Kennedy and his ill-fated daughter Kathleen, President Kennedy, accused rapist William Kennedy Smith, and the star-crossed lovers, JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette. Each of the seven profiles demonstrates the basic premise of this book: The Kennedy Curse is the result of the destructive collision between the Kennedy's fantasy of omnipotence-an unremitting desire to get away with things that others cannot-and the cold, hard realities of life.

Book excerpt: Joseph P. Kennedy’s reputation as a savvy businessman, diplomat, and sly political patriarch is well-documented. But his years as a Hollywood mogul have never been fully explored until now. In Joseph P. Kennedy Presents, Cari Beauchamp brilliantly explores this unknown chapter in Kennedy’s biography. Between 1926 and 1930, Kennedy positioned himself as a major Hollywood player. In two short years, he was running three studios simultaneously and then, in a bold move, he merged his studios with David Sarnoff to form the legendary RKO Studio. Beauchamp also tells the story of Kennedy’s affair with Gloria Swanson; how he masterminded the mergers that created the blueprint for contemporary Hollywood; and made the fortune that became the foundation of his empire.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Family Records, Vol. 1 of 2: Or the Two Sisters "Heaven forming each on other to depend, - A master, or a servant, or a friend, - Bids each on other for assistance call, Till one man's weakness grows the strength of all. Wants, frailties, fashions, closer still ally The common interest, or endear the tie. To these we owe true friendship, love sincere, Each home felt joy that life inherits here." Pope. "What can be the cause of your abstraction, dear Margaret," said the beautiful Susan Falkland to her sister, who was gazing intently from her bed-room window at the scene before her, apparently forgetful that her toilette was still unfinished, while Susan was engaged with the arrangement of her hair. "You have not uttered a word for this half hour, and you are not usually so slow in preparation for a fine day's enjoyment." A scarcely audible sigh was breathed at the conclusion of these words; and Margaret turned hastily from the objects of her late contemplation, to catch the reason of a sadness which her quick affection had perceived in her sisters manner. "You shall soon hear all that was passing in my mind, dear Susan." "What! all, Margaret?" "Yes, yes, all," rejoined she, as the mantling blood in her laughing cheeks almost convinced her more serious sister that she would not be as able as she was willing to fulfil her promise. Book excerpt: “Here is that rare thing: an untold chapter in the Kennedy saga. . .Compelling and illuminating.”—Jon Meacham Based on genealogical breakthroughs and previously unreleased records, this is the first book to explore the inspiring story of the poor Irish refugee couple who escaped famine; created a life together in a city hostile to Irish, immigrants, and Catholics; and launched the Kennedy dynasty in America. Their Irish ancestry was a hallmark of the Kennedys’ initial political profile, as JFK leveraged his working-class roots to connect with blue-collar voters. Today, we remember this iconic American family as the vanguard of wealth, power, and style rather than as the descendants of poor immigrants. Here at last, we meet the first American Kennedys, Patrick and Bridget, who arrived as many thousands of others did following the Great Famine—penniless and hungry. Less than a decade after their marriage in Boston, Patrick’s sudden death left Bridget to raise their children single-handedly. Her rise from housemaid to shop owner in the face of rampant poverty and discrimination kept her family intact, allowing her only son P.J. to become a successful saloon owner and businessman. P.J. went on to become the first American Kennedy elected to public office—the first of many. Written by the grandson of an Irish immigrant couple and based on first-ever access to P.J. Kennedy’s private papers, The First Kennedys is a story of sacrifice and survival, resistance and reinvention: an American story.
