The translator has accomplished his task in a most praiseworthy manner by giving a faithful translation, without in any way detracting from the strength or clarity of the original commentary. The inclusion of a ‘word index’ of the entire text has added to the worth of the book.

This book was released on with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Upanishad forms a part of the Brahmana belonging to the Katha Shakha of the Krishna Yajur Veda. It stands in a class by itself. It combines charming poetry, elevating mysticism, and profound philosophy. The subject of the mystery of death is introduced through the medium of an interesting anecdote; and the teaching of the Upanishad is presented in the form of a dialogue between a mere boy, Nachiketa, and Yama, the King of Death. With the text of the Upanishad in Devanagari, a lucid and faithful translation of the text and commentary, relevant notes, reference to quotations, and index to texts, this Upanishad is a must for all students of Vedanta. Published by Advaita Ashrama, a publication house of Ramakrishna Math, Belur Math.

Book Synopsis The Classical Upani?ads by : Signe Cohen

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Upani?ads are rich and complex Sanskrit Hindu scriptures dating back to the 8th century BCE and are a staple of world religion courses across the globe. In this volume, Signe Cohen guide readers through on the thirteen "Classical Upani?ads," those generally regarded as the oldest: Bhadrayaka, Chandogya, Taittiriya, Aitareya, Isa, Kena, Katha, Mundaka, Svetasvatara, Mandukya, Prasna, Kausitaki, and Maitri Upanisad. Where most survey textbooks present a cursory overview of these texts, The Classical Upani?ads: A Guide provides a nuanced but accessible exploration of the Upani?ads that will benefit both scholars, students, and general readers alike. This volume explores the historical, geographical, and social context of the Classical Upani?ads and discusses issues of dating, authorship, and transmission of the texts. Cohen also breaks down central ideas in the Upani?ads, such as atman, brahman, karma, reincarnation, moksa, knowledge, and sacred sounds (mantras). The text also discusses the importance of the Upani?ads for Hinduism and Indian culture, as well as the reception of the Upani?ads in the West. Through exploring these works, their key characters and ideas, and their impact on Hinduism's core beliefs, Cohen provides the reader a thorough but approachable entry into these seminal texts.

Book Synopsis The Kena Upanishad & Commentary by : Son Rivers
Download or read book The Kena Upanishad & Commentary written by Son Rivers and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was reading the Mandukya, Isa, Kena. I had a copy of the Eight Upanishads and the great Shankara's commentaries. Shankara: the early 8th-century founder of Advaita Vedanta is the go-to sage in that world. And so I went to him. But somewhere in the Isa Upanishad I began to notice a curiosity. Shankara was not always interpreting the words of the Isa but adding his own, not to necessarily clarify what was there, but to make it fit with what he was saying was there, what must be there! And then it got curiouser and curiouser. I noticed almost all of the other translations read were most often translating Shankara rather than the words themselves. From that point, it was decided to go back and start translating the entire work. The intent was to merely translate the words as best possible, utilizing online Sanskrit dictionaries, other translations, and web search engines. Also, the words would be strung together in the order they were written with as few connecting words as possible, only to be used to make sense of the words in an English phrasing. Moreover, and most importantly, intuition would be replied upon for any ultimate choice of rendition. The raw words would sit there until a flash of insight fashioned them together, choosing a more appropriate synonymous word and maybe a better connector, with the mandate still being word-for-word translation. In this way, the Kena would translate itself. To my personal amazement, what emerged was a direct path of wisdom. There was no sectarian influence there whatsoever. In fact, the only words ever read here that came as close to the freshness of the Kena were those of Nisargadatta Maharaj and Ramana Maharshi and some early Chan writings. Included in this book is that initial translation with the simple notes kept at the time. But the transcreation, formed after the translation was finished, is the main text. The intent for this was to keep all the words there there, and add others only for clarification, structure, and rhythm. So this book will consist of this front matter of Preface and Introduction. Then, the transcreation follows. Next is the transcreation again, but with commentary after each verse. Next is the translation and notes. Last is an afterword, where the commentary on the Kena is made a little more manifest. Enjoy.

Book Synopsis Shankara and Indian Philosophy by : Natalia Isayeva
Download or read book Shankara and Indian Philosophy written by Natalia Isayeva and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Advaita-Vedanta, God or Brahman is identical with the inner self (the Atman) of each person, while the rest of the world is nothing but objective illusion (maya). Shankara maintains that there are two primary levels of existence and knowledge: the higher knowledge that is Brahman itself, and the relative, limited knowledge, regarded as the very texture of the universe. Consequently, the task of a human being is to reach the absolute unity and the reality of Brahman—in other words, to reach the innermost self within his or her own being, discarding on the way all temporary characteristics and attributes.
