Book excerpt: During the first two decades following the Mexican Revolution, children in the country gained unprecedented consideration as viable cultural critics, social actors, and subjects of reform. Not only did they become central to the reform agenda of the revolutionary nationalist government; they were also the beneficiaries of the largest percentage of the national budget. While most historical accounts of postrevolutionary Mexico omit discussion of how children themselves experienced and perceived the sudden onslaught of resources and attention, Elena Jackson Albarrán, in Seen and Heard in Mexico, places children’s voices at the center of her analysis. Albarrán draws on archived records of children’s experiences in the form of letters, stories, scripts, drawings, interviews, presentations, and homework assignments to explore how Mexican childhood, despite the hopeful visions of revolutionary ideologues, was not a uniform experience set against the monolithic backdrop of cultural nationalism, but rather was varied and uneven. Moving children from the aesthetic to the political realm, Albarrán situates them in their rightful place at the center of Mexico’s revolutionary narrative by examining the avenues through which children contributed to ideas about citizenship and nation.

Book excerpt: An unflinching, breathtaking retelling of the story of Rhea Silvia, fated by the gods to play a spectacular part in the mythos of Rome—the mother of Romulus, Rome’s legendary founder. It is 772 BCE, nearly two decades before the birth of Rome. The city of Alba Longa and its king, Numitor, reign supreme. But Numitor’s children, Princess Rhea Silvia and Prince Egestus, fear for the city’s future. With Rhea set to marry an unpredictable enemy, they can see the end of their family’s dynasty as surely as their ancestor Aeneas saw the fall of Troy. In a bid to maintain power, Rhea is set on a harrowing course that will push her to the limits of human endurance, forcing her to turn to the gods and rise with the ferocity imbued in her Trojan blood, sacrificing everything for the new Troy—Rome. RHEA SILVIA is the first novel in The First Vestals of Rome, an epic trilogy about the founding Vestal Virgins of ancient Rome. About The First Vestals of Rome Trilogy Set in the 8th century BCE, The First Vestals of Rome is an action-packed trilogy that dramatizes the sensational, often perilous lives of three legendary women who gave rise to Rome’s powerful order of Vestal Virgins. All of them central to the life of Romulus, Rome’s founder, these tectonic women were fated to shape the history of the Eternal City as much as any Caesar who came after them. Editorial Reviews for RHEA SILVIA "This novel turns the myth of Romulus and Remus into a plausible and energetic history but has many graphic scenes of the torture, assassination and aberrant behavior that would come to mark the Roman Empire...[A] vibrant, enthralling tale." - The Historical Novel Society "The dramatization of the scenes is superb, it keeps the reader captivated and intrigued...[the novel] brings you from "old" to "new" with brilliant clarity. If you love history, the Roman empire and the sex, fights and deception that allowed these privileged people to create one of the greatest cultures in the world, you will love this book." - Book Junkie Reviews

Book excerpt: The worth of any book is not only to be measured by the joy that you derive while reading it, but by what you can actually glean and carry away. It is a treasure trove laden with pearls of wisdom, and the tenets of ‘Art of Healthy and Joyful Living.’ It is a soothing elixir to the world torn with tears, wounds and scars. It makes one think in a new direction and induces to explore. As the words sink into us slowly page by page, the literary journey takes a very pious turn to become a holy pilgrimage. It shows the answer is best sought in self-realisation. The author is an intrepid traveller and a sensitive poet. With his repertoire, he has tried to seek the answers to the enigma of life, and many everyday issues that baffle us. The author here extols, ‘one who looks around is intelligent and experienced, but the one who looks within is learnt and wise. To, one who is on a journey within this is a companion and a friendly guide. It tells, ‘Love the life you live, and live the life you love, enjoy what you do and do what you enjoy.’

Book excerpt: Magic, romance, and slumbering gods clash in the start of a riveting fantasy series spanning gangsters' dens, forgotten temples, and the high seas from the New York Times bestselling author of the Illuminae Files and the Aurora Cycle. Selly has salt water in her veins. So when her father leaves her high and dry in the port of Kirkpool, she has no intention of riding out the winter at home while he sails to adventure in the north seas. But any plans to follow him are dashed when a handsome stranger with tell-tale magician's marks on his arms commandeers her ship under cover of darkness: He is Prince Leander of Alinor, and he needs to cross the Crescent Sea without detection so he can complete a ritual on the sacred Isles of the Gods. Selly has no desire to escort a spoiled prince anywhere, and no time for his entitled demands or his good looks. But what starts as a leisure cruise will lead to acts of treason and sheer terror on the high seas, bringing two countries to the brink of war, two strangers closer than they ever thought possible and two dangerous gods stirring from centuries of slumber...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every revolution begins with a spark. In a world torn apart by war, one nation remains standing—Cinder City. It is surrounded by three state rings—Fringe, Boundary and Limits—and run by the Authority, President Atlas Gold, the tyrannical leader of the golden city. The population is divided into two groups, the rich and the poor, the Solvents and the Insolvents, and controlled under the threat of being named an Ember—a death sentence. Each year, Cinder officials open their Golden Gates and hold the Ember Harvest of all eighteen-year-olds. The Harvest is a test of the potential Embers. It is said that over three hundred years ago, the Insolvents had grown tired of their treatment and had mastered innate abilities to help them wage war against Cinder City. Now, as a precaution, every child is tested for the Scoria Singularity, remnants of the genetics from a time the world had been almost destroyed overnight, for the Authority would never risk another war. He would remove the sparks—the Embers—before they started another revolution. For Ezra, an Irish Chippewa—the last of the Chippewa people and recently named a potential Ember sent to Ember Gates—survival is in her blood. As the Ember Gates transforms her and the others, Ezra must determine who her real allies are, what parts of herself she is willing to sacrifice and where her newfound love fits into the cruel world of Ember Gates. Ezra will be pushed to the limits, having to decide between her humanity and staying.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "They say that the eldest of the chief's daughters..." So begins a tale from the Basotho, unfolded by the meager light of a dung fire that burns smokily behind the reed screen sheltering the entrance of the hut. The old ones of the tribe wait until dark before telling their stories, for everyone knows horns will grow from the head of one who tells a story during daylight hours. Tales from the Basotho abounds with elements familiar to folk narrative. The heroes and heroines are the chiefs and their wives, their sons and their daughters. Fantastic creatures frequent the narratives. exhibiting their awful powers. Rustic peace and beauty pervade the stories, as Minnie Postma amply demonstrates in her versions of the tales. Something fearful may be occurring—the dreaded Koeoko pulling the only son of the chief under water—but, at the same time, girls with babies tied to their backs are searching for edible bulbs in the veld, and an old woman dreams in the gentle sunlight in front of the huts. These tales from the Basotho are for entertainment only. There is a tabu against telling tales while the sun shines, because daylight hours must be saved for work. The telling itself is the· reason the story exists, for the audience is already aware of the outcome of each tale. As Wm. Hugh Jansen emphasizes in his foreword, "text" and "context" are often easily interpreted and made accessible in a translation, but Tales from the Basotho is ultimately successful for its rendering of "texture." And texture is doubly hard to convey when the telling itself is of primary importance. Minnie Postma and Susie McDermid have transferred the art of the Basotho raconteur onto the printed page. All the simple, understandable formulas, exclamations, and repetitions used so skillfully by the native storyteller are present. Rhythm is an important element in the tales, and a word, a phrase, even a whole paragraph will be repeated until the rhythm satisfies the storyteller, in tum increasing the appreciation of the listeners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lost in modern myth, false history and general misinterpretation, the Ninja have been misrepresented for many years. More recently, a desire for a more historical view of the ninja has become a popular theme in the history/martial arts community and Antony Cummins is the primary driving force behind that movement. In Search of the Ninja is based upon the Historical Ninjutsu Research Team’s translations of the major ninja manuals and consists of genuinely new material. Little historical research has been done on the Ninja of Japan. Here for the first time the connection of the famous Hattori family warriors with the Ninja is explained. The Samurai versus Ninja myth is dispelled. The realities of Ninja skills are analysed. How did a Ninja work underwater when mining castle walls? How can a bird be used to set fire to the enemy’s camp? The book explores newly discovered connections to ancient Chinese manuals, lost skills and the ‘hidden’ Zen philosophy that the Ninja followed. In Search of the Ninja is the first and only historical look at the shinobi of ancient Japan.

Book excerpt: It’s been five years since Andy came face to face with a shocking experience that forever changed his life. It all started with the mysterious disappearance of Carmelita Mendosa, a young woman in the small town of Bullsnort, New Mexico. As a rookie reporter, Andy found the case curious and couldn’t help but look into it. In June of 1980, Andy went to Bullsnort, assigned to investigate Carmelita’s disappearance. Everyone thought the worst but hoped for the best. Then, Andy saw something: a figure seemingly made of sand. To the Native American people, this was a Sand God, also known as a “Dust Devil.” Andy’s “devil” wasn’t what it appeared to be, though, and this sighting led him into many strange experiences that left him questioning his sanity. What had become of Carmelita, and what had drawn Andy to her case in the first place? Secrets are revealed, but suffice to say, Andy is never the same after that trip to the mountains.
