Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans have a gift for coining proverbs. "A picture is worth a thousand words" was not, as you might imagine, the product of ancient Chinese wisdom -- it was actually minted by advertising executive Fred Barnard in a 1921 advertisement for Printer's Ink magazine. After all, Americans are first and foremost a practical people and proverbs can be loosely defined as pithy statements that are generally accepted as true and useful. The next logical step would be to gather all of this wisdom together for a truly American celebration of shrewd advice.A Dictionary of American Proverbs is the first major collection of proverbs in the English language based on oral sources rather than written ones. Listed alphabetically according to their most significant key word, it features over 15,000 entries including uniquely American proverbs that have never before been recorded, as well as thousands of traditional proverbs that have found their way into American speech from classical, biblical, British, continental European, and American literature. Based on the fieldwork conducted over thirty years by the American Dialect Society, this volume is complete with historical references to the earliest written sources, and supplies variants and recorded geographical distribution after each proverb. Many surprised await the reader in this vast treasure trove of wit and wisdom. Collected here are nuggets of popular wisdom on all aspects of American life: weather, agriculture, travel, money, business, food, neighbors, friends, manners, government, politics, law, health, education, religion, music, song, and dance. And, to further enhance browsing pleasure, the editors have provided a detailed guide to the use of the work. While it's true that many of our best known proverbs have been supplied by the ever-present "Anonymous," many more can be attributed to some very famous Americans, like Ernest Hemingway, Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, Mark Twain, J. Pierpont Morgan, Thomas Alva Edison, Abigail Adams, and Ralph Waldo Emerson, to name but a few offered in this fascinating collection.Who wouldn't want to know the origin of "the opera ain't over till the fat lady sings?" This uniquely American proverb and many more are gathered together in A Dictionary of American Proverbs. A great resource for students and scholars of literature, psychology, folklore, linguistics, anthropology, and cultural history, this endlessly intriguing volume is also a delightful companion for anyone with an interest in American culture.

Book excerpt: “Mysticism in Newburyport” is a seven-book series revealing ancient secrets from masters of all cultures along with modern-day breakthroughs by scientists and quantum physicists of our times. These tales began flowing after Peter’s powerful spiritual awakening in Newburyport, Massachusetts. Newburyport is a quaint little, historic seaport on the coast of Massachusetts heading toward New Hampshire. Peter had been sober in the 12-step recovery program for many years and had recovered from his alcoholism. Peter’s love of Nature had brought him to the Newburyport area. This area is rich with Nature’s treasures, Native American Heritage, and many tales from the tall cargo ships of olden days. High Street was lined with homes of these Sea Captains. Peter’s awakening had given him new eyes and new highly evolved senses. Peter was to have powerful past-life experiences with his Mystery Woman guide named Layne. Layne was a mystic who would tell people things about themselves that there was no way she could know. She would look you in the eyes and tell you your deepest secrets. She also knew about the Earth’s electromagnetic grids and helped Peter understand what he was experiencing in Newburyport. Peter’s new heightened senses could feel the electromagnet flow of energy and the convergence right below Market Square in Newburyport. Market Square was one of the crossroads for these powerful electromagnet energies that give life to our planet. Peter was to share the secrets that were revealed to him in his writings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Tragedies to Happiness: My True Stories is a memoir of my life. I have been through five tragedies that I describe in the book-they are being molested as a child, suffering from deep depression, a suicide attempt, deaths of my parents and brother, Walt, and bankruptcy. I was thinking one day, that I have been through a lot of tragedies in my life, and I am still a happy person today. I wrote the book to let people know that even though they go through one or more tragedies in their life, they can move forward and lead a happy life, as I have. If another tragedy strikes, take care of it the best way you know how and again move forward. I discuss in detail each tragedy. I also have included two-line rhymes regarding the health-care field. I wrote about seventy of them in three days. They just kept coming to me. I also parody some songs that I have adapted to include the health-care field. I have as Chapter 1, the love story of myself and Dave Herzig. We have been together for twenty-five years after meeting in a summer Friday night bowling league in 1989, and we are more in love today than when we first fell in love with each other in 1989. I found a man who loves me when I thought nobody ever would. I made Dave wait 167 days until our first "romantic session." He could have left, but he waited for me. He didn't know why I wanted to wait. I needed to know that I could trust him first. He didn't know about my molestation when I was nine years old. I feel the book will help others, and that is why I wrote it.

He thought he’d never truly live again… After years as a prisoner of war, Vin MacKintosh returns with a scarred and battered soul. Beset by guilt and nightmares from his years of torture and torment, he must readapt to a world where everyone he knew is a different person and the world a vastly different place. While everyone else seems to constantly compare him to the man he was, he cannot help but turn to the one person who gives him encouragement and motivation to move on. As his best friend, Jason MacKenzie’s, younger sister, Vin has known Moira her entire life, her letters during the war provided him comfort and understanding. True friendship. Now that he is back, he needs those things more than ever. However, Vin finds he cannot continue to look at Moira merely as a friend and little sister any longer. He cannot help but see her as a woman…and one too desirable to resist. Moira makes him feel alive again, but he knows it cannot last. While lust can do nothing but ruin the friendship he desperately needs, Vin knows that the truth about her brother’s death would destroy Moira’s affectionate for him forever. Plagued by his guilt, he pushes her away when he needs her most. What will he do when he realizes that what he feels is more than merely a question of lust?

Understanding Flash Photography is a guide to off-camera flash, helping free photographers from “auto” to get the images they want when natural light isn’t enough. If you’ve been afraid to venture past natural light, here is the book that will finally help you explore the exciting possibilities of artificial light. Author Bryan Peterson starts by breaking down how flash works, then dispels the widely held myth that automatic “TTL” flash exposure is easier, explaining how to quickly master manual flash exposure to control the quality, shape, and direction of light. For the hundreds of thousands who found Understanding Exposure an exciting tool in moving past “auto” exposure in available light, Understanding Flash Photography is the essential companion to mastering the often challenging exposure puzzle.
