Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER From Gabrielle Hamilton, bestselling author of Blood, Bones & Butter, comes her eagerly anticipated cookbook debut filled with signature recipes from her celebrated New York City restaurant Prune. NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY PUBLISHERS WEEKLY NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE SEASON BY Time • O: The Oprah Magazine • Bon Appétit • Eater A self-trained cook turned James Beard Award–winning chef, Gabrielle Hamilton opened Prune on New York’s Lower East Side fifteen years ago to great acclaim and lines down the block, both of which continue today. A deeply personal and gracious restaurant, in both menu and philosophy, Prune uses the elements of home cooking and elevates them in unexpected ways. The result is delicious food that satisfies on many levels. Highly original in concept, execution, look, and feel, the Prune cookbook is an inspired replica of the restaurant’s kitchen binders. It is written to Gabrielle’s cooks in her distinctive voice, with as much instruction, encouragement, information, and scolding as you would find if you actually came to work at Prune as a line cook. The recipes have been tried, tasted, and tested dozens if not hundreds of times. Intended for the home cook as well as the kitchen professional, the instructions offer a range of signals for cooks—a head’s up on when you have gone too far, things to watch out for that could trip you up, suggestions on how to traverse certain uncomfortable parts of the journey to ultimately help get you to the final destination, an amazing dish. Complete with more than with more than 250 recipes and 250 color photographs, home cooks will find Prune’s most requested recipes—Grilled Head-on Shrimp with Anchovy Butter, Bread Heels and Pan Drippings Salad, Tongue and Octopus with Salsa Verde and Mimosa’d Egg, Roasted Capon on Garlic Crouton, Prune’s famous Bloody Mary (and all 10 variations). Plus, among other items, a chapter entitled “Garbage”—smart ways to repurpose foods that might have hit the garbage or stockpot in other restaurant kitchens but are turned into appetizing bites and notions at Prune. Featured here are the recipes, approach, philosophy, evolution, and nuances that make them distinctively Prune’s. Unconventional and honest, in both tone and content, this book is a welcome expression of the cookbook as we know it. Praise for Prune “Fresh, fascinating . . . entirely pleasurable . . . Since 1999, when the chef Gabrielle Hamilton put Triscuits and canned sardines on the first menu of her East Village bistro, Prune, she has nonchalantly broken countless rules of the food world. The rule that a successful restaurant must breed an empire. The rule that chefs who happen to be women should unconditionally support one another. The rule that great chefs don’t make great writers (with her memoir, Blood, Bones & Butter). And now, the rule that restaurant food has to be simplified and prettied up for home cooks in order to produce a useful, irresistible cookbook. . . . [Prune] is the closest thing to the bulging loose-leaf binder, stuck in a corner of almost every restaurant kitchen, ever to be printed and bound between cloth covers. (These happen to be a beautiful deep, dark magenta.)”—The New York Times “One of the most brilliantly minimalist cookbooks in recent memory . . . at once conveys the thrill of restaurant cooking and the wisdom of the author, while making for a charged reading experience.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

From there, Rocambole will travel on to the Indies in pursuit of his enemies On his return though, he will need to be careful, because the London po-lice are on his tail! Also included is “The Truth About Rocambole”, where he reveals in first person, the background to all his previous exploits and the ending of the Indian adventure. This volume includes new unabridged English translations of the original French texts: “Le Dernier Mot de Rocambole - Tome I - Les Étrangleurs” “Le Dernier Mot de Rocambole - Tome II - Les Millions de la bohémienne” “Le Dernier Mot de Rocambole - Tome III - Un drame dans l’Inde” “Le Dernier Mot de Rocambole - Tome IV - Les Trésors du Rajah” “La Vérité sur Rocambole” Text translation and layout, artwork, introductory notes, author’s biography , synopses and chronology: © 2023 Roland Radaelli and IP Rights Ltd THE COMPLETE SAGA IN NEW UNABRIDGED ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS The Rocambole Saga The Rocambole adventures were first published in instalments in various French feuilletons, as supplements to newspapers. This was an extremely popular format in 19th Century France as well as in other countries. Novels such as Dumas’ “The Count of Montecristo”, Sue’s “The Mysteries of Paris” and Feval’s “Le Bossu” (“The Hunchback”) were first published in instalments and later reprinted as books. From 1857 to 1870, the year before the author’s death, Ponson du Terrail wrote thousands of pages chronicling Rocambole’s adventures, first as a master criminal, then as a defender of justice. The novels also offer an eye-opening account on how society was structured in 19th century France with stark divisions between nobility, rich businessmen and the working classes. Far from being outdated, these novels feel as fresh today as when they were written over 150 years ago. About the Author Pierre Alexis Ponson du Terrail was born in France in 1829. From 1850 he started writing serials for several newspapers and in 20 years will write over 200 novels! In 1857 he created the character of Rocambole, which will go on to achieve great success all over the world. The word “rocambolesque” is still used nowadays in many languages to describe fantastic, incredible adventures and scheming plots. With Germany’s invasion of France in 1870, Ponson du Terrail joins the resistance but a sudden illness strikes him and he dies in January 1871. The ROCAMBOLE SAGA in our catalogue includes the following ebooks: Series 1 - Legacy of Blood Series 2 - Knaves of Hearts Series 3 - Adventures of Rocambole Series 4 - Rocambole's Redemption Series 5 - Rocambole's Resurrection Series 6 - Rocambole's Last Word Series 7 - Rocambole in London Series 8 - Rocambole in Prison Series 9 - Rocambole and the Hangman's Rope

Reyes’s second delightful Caribbean Kitchen mystery, perfectly delicious for fans of Mia P. Manansala. Fall festivities are underway in Coral Shores, Miami. Cuban-American cooking show star Miriam Quiñones-Smith wakes up to find a corpse in her front yard. The body by the fake tombstone is the woman that was kicked out of the school's Fall Festival the day before. Miriam's luck does not improve. Her passive-aggressive mother-in-law puts her in charge of the Women's Club annual gala. But this year, it's not canapes and waltzes. Miriam and her girlfriends-squad opt for fun and flavor. They want to spice it up with Caribbean food trucks and a calypso band. While making plans at the country club, they hear a volatile argument between the new head chef and the club's manager. Not long after, the chef swan dives to his death at the bottom of the grand staircase. Was it an accident? Or was it Beverly, the sous chef, who is furious after being passed over for the job? Or maybe it was his ex-girlfriend, Anastasia? Add two possible poisonings to the mix and Miriam is worried the food truck fun is going to be a major crash. As the clock ticks down and the body count goes up, Miriam's life is put in jeopardy. Will she connect the dots or die in the deep freeze? Foodies and mystery lovers alike will savor the denouement as the truth is laid bare in this simmering stew of rage, retribution, and murder.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A prodigious talent stalked by controversy, celebrity chef John Burton-Race has always lived life on the edge, and remains nothing if not pragmatic. "I wear people down. I’m a bit of a basket case." Born in Singapore in 1957 to a British diplomat father, Burton-Race helped the family chef while being exposed to global tastes and flavours that still influence his style of cooking. He worked under renowned chef Raymond Blanc at Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons and when Blanc opened Le Petit Blanc in Oxford, he turned to Burton-Race to head the kitchen. Here the young, aspiring chef would win his first Michelin star. Three years later he opened his own restaurant, L’Ortolan in Berkshire. Awarded two Michelin stars, the achievement was repeated in 2000 at John Burton-Race Restaurant at London’s Landmark Hotel. Television viewers, however, bore witness to his mercurial nature in the fly-on-the-wall series French Leave and Return of the Chef, and an appearance on I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here ended in disaster when his second wife closed his Devon restaurant while he was in the Australian bush. Possessed of an innate talent for self destruction, John Burton-Race is still driven, still complex, still controversial, still living life at 100 miles an hour. This is his story.

Book excerpt: In 1974, R.B. Fitch of Chapel Hill bought 632 acres in Chatham County, North Carolina, just outside Chapel Hill, with a vision of creating a community in the style of the English villages he admired when serving as a U.S. Air Force pilot in the United Kingdom in the 1950s. With his wife Jenny, he began constructing the project and today, 50 years later, Fearrington Village is a major development in the region with some 1,600 houses, a nationally known luxury inn, a five-star restaurant, a bookstore, and a spa, drawing tourists and residents from all over. Fearrington Village was the first Planned Unit Development in Chatham County and one of the first in the state.
