Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesian Idioms and Expressions is a collection of Indonesian expressions, including proverbs, slang, quotations and acronyms, that offers a commentary on their origins, as well as insights into Indonesian culture, customs, and history. The book is an informal compendium designed to be both educational and easy to read. There are four parts in the book, and the chapters hit on various linguistic themes, among them wisdom, characters, animals, food, slang, family affairs, and politics. Entries include the expression in Bahasa Indonesia, a translation, an equivalent expression in English, and an explanation if necessary. The idea is to learn about Indonesian through the texture and content of its language, rather than the headlines—often bad ones—that tend to dominate perceptions of the vast country.

Book Synopsis Indonesian Destinies by : Theodore Friend
Download or read book Indonesian Destinies written by Theodore Friend and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can such a gentle people as we are be so murderous? a prominent Indonesian asks. That question--and the mysteries of the archipelago's vast contradictions--haunt Theodore Friend's remarkable work, a narrative of Indonesia during the last half century, from the postwar revolution against Dutch imperialism to the unrest of today. Part history, part meditation on a place and a past observed firsthand, Indonesian Destinies penetrates events that gave birth to the world's fourth largest nation and assesses the continuing dangers that threaten to tear it apart. Friend reveals Sukarno's character through wartime collaboration with Japan, and Suharto's through the mass murder of communists that brought him to power for thirty-two years. He guides our understanding of the tolerant forms of Islam prevailing among the largest Muslim population in the world, and shows growing tensions generated by international terrorism. Drawing on a deep knowledge of the country's cultures, its leaders, and its ordinary people, Friend gives a human face and a sense of immediacy to the self-inflicted failures and immeasurable tragedies that cast a shadow over Indonesia's past and future. A clear and compelling passion shines through this richly illustrated work. Rarely have narrative history and personal historical witness been so seamlessly joined.

This book was released on 2020-03-11 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This (research) book highlights the unavoidable conversation engaging readers about the meaning and significance of Indonesian plays from the flights of Wayang and Brechtian strategy. The goal is, thus, to provide those willing to understand Indonesian plays with the necessary steps to go through. Not only are they invited to pay a visit to (world) literature, but they are also to deal with cultural studies, the dramatictext, and a critical vocabulary common to play analysis. Offering a response to such a compact goal, there are important things that need pointing out, namely, the elaboration of Wayang strategy and its application. This also suggests highlighting Brechtian strategy, the world of literature, Indonesian literature, Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian language) and its roles within the national political affairs. This book is, thus, organized to discuss methods of play analysis which primarily means to find the meaning of the very plays, in this case the work of Arifin C. Noer.

Book Synopsis Genders and Sexualities in Indonesian Cinema by : Ben Murtagh
Download or read book Genders and Sexualities in Indonesian Cinema written by Ben Murtagh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-23 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia has a long and rich tradition of homosexual and transgender cultures, and the past 40 years in particular has seen an increased visibility of sexual minorities in the country, which has been reflected through film and popular culture. This book examines how representations of gay, lesbian and transgender individuals and communities have developed in Indonesian cinema during this period. The book first explores Indonesian engagement with waria (male-to-female transgender) identities and the emerging representation of gay and lesbi Indonesians during Suharto’s New Order regime (1966-98), before going on to the reimagining of these positions following the fall of the New Order, a period which saw the rebirth of the film industry with a new generation of directors, producers and actors. Using original interview research and focus groups with gay, lesbi and waria identified Indonesians, alongside the films themselves and a wealth of archival sources, the book contrasts the ways in which transgendered lives are actually lived with their representations on screen.
Book Synopsis The Army and the Indonesian Genocide by : Jess Melvin
Download or read book The Army and the Indonesian Genocide written by Jess Melvin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past half century, the Indonesian military has depicted the 1965-66 killings, which resulted in the murder of approximately one million unarmed civilians, as the outcome of a spontaneous uprising. This formulation not only denied military agency behind the killings, it also denied that the killings could ever be understood as a centralised, nation-wide campaign. Using documents from the former Indonesian Intelligence Agency’s archives in Banda Aceh this book shatters the Indonesian government’s official propaganda account of the mass killings and proves the military’s agency behind those events. This book tells the story of the 3,000 pages of top-secret documents that comprise the Indonesian genocide files. Drawing upon these orders and records, along with the previously unheard stories of 70 survivors, perpetrators, and other eyewitness of the genocide in Aceh province it reconstructs, for the first time, a detailed narrative of the killings using the military’s own accounts of these events. This book makes the case that the 1965-66 killings can be understood as a case of genocide, as defined by the 1948 Genocide Convention. The first book to reconstruct a detailed narrative of the genocide using the army’s own records of these events, it will be of interest to students and academics in the field of Southeast Asian Studies, History, Politics, the Cold War, Political Violence and Comparative Genocide.

Book Synopsis Business in Indonesia by : M. Chatib Basri
Download or read book Business in Indonesia written by M. Chatib Basri and published by Flipside Digital Content Company Inc.. This book was released on 2003-08-01 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Indonesia's business environment since reformasi began in 1985 -- what stayed the same, what changed, and would could change. Economic recovery has been hesitant. Regime change and political reform have created uncertainties that have deepened reluctance to invest. A raft of government-instigated changes have left their imprint: decentralization, privatization, new company legislation, anti-corruption efforts, nationalization of debt-ridden banks, and firms being forced into receivership. More cautious lending practices by remaining financial institutions have imposed a credit crunch. Increased worker militancy and minimum wage rises have led some international firms to reconsider their presence in Indonesia. Changes in the business environment have caused a redefinition of private enterprise-government relations, inducing firms to re-examine their organization and management. The book includes insights of distinguished and stimulating speakers from business, independent research organizations, and academic institutions in Indonesia, Australia and elsewhere.
Book Synopsis An Indonesian-English Dictionary by : John M. Echols
Download or read book An Indonesian-English Dictionary written by John M. Echols and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This dictionary is meant primarily as a tool for English speakers who need to know Indonesian and who deal with Indonesian writings. The aim has thus been to give comprehensive coverage to forms a foreigner might run across in Indonesian readings, from this era or from the past, but excluding classical Malay literature, Much of the Indonesian written production (written and otherwise) contains slangy, colloquial, and regional forms, and we have not excluded such forms. On the other hand we have confined the listing of dialectical forms only to those likely to be widely known...The dictionary should also be useful to Indonesians who wish to learn English equivalents of Indonesian words, but it has not been developed primarily for that purpose, because many English words can only be defined by a sequence of Indonesian words." from Introduction.
