Book excerpt: ONCE UPON A TIME, THERE WAS A PLANET FAR, FAR AWAY... The planet was called Kateraan. All of its inhabitants were cats- incredibly smart, genius cats! Kateraan was a world of vast scientific achievement. Everyone on this planet was a genius at something. Everyon, except for El Gato, so they thought. And the big discovery in the life of the average Kateraanian was that of determining what he/she was brilliant at. To ease each Kateraanian along the path to discovery of his or her brilliance, huge institutions of higher learning had been established. They contained their computer data banks vast storehouses of all the accumulated knowledge of hundreds of years brilliant work by Kateraanian scientists, historians, mathematicians, sociologists, etc. And, these institutions were staffed by a faculty of the most brilliant minds available to the Kateraanian populace, at large. To be a teacher in Kateraan was an honor bestowed only upon the best and the brightest of an already stellar pool of talent. It was the highest position anybody could achieve in society short of being a world leader. There is no such thing as dance music on planet Kateraan. The Kateraanians believe that any kind of music other than drone sounds or classical music is the work of the Devil, because it promotes hatred, violence, discrimination and domination. Thus, at times, life can be a bit boring, hearing the same old drone sounds and/or classical music over and over again. In brief, El Gato's goal is to prove the Kateraanian's that not all music can be healing voice of the universe. El Gato further believes that non-toxic music promotes self-respect, as well as respect for others. Moreover, good music promotes fun, togetherness and a sense of hope when things aren't going well. The bottom line according to El Gato, "Life ain't fun until the music plays."

Book excerpt: “An unforgettable look at the peculiar horrors and humiliations involved in solitary confinement” from the prisoners who have survived it (New York Review of Books). On any given day, the United States holds more than eighty-thousand people in solitary confinement, a punishment that—beyond fifteen days—has been denounced as a form of cruel and degrading treatment by the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture. Now, in a book that will add a startling new dimension to the debates around human rights and prison reform, former and current prisoners describe the devastating effects of isolation on their minds and bodies, the solidarity expressed between individuals who live side by side for years without ever meeting one another face to face, the ever-present specters of madness and suicide, and the struggle to maintain hope and humanity. As Chelsea Manning wrote from her own solitary confinement cell, “The personal accounts by prisoners are some of the most disturbing that I have ever read.” These firsthand accounts are supplemented by the writing of noted experts, exploring the psychological, legal, ethical, and political dimensions of solitary confinement. “Do we really think it makes sense to lock so many people alone in tiny cells for twenty-three hours a day, for months, sometimes for years at a time? That is not going to make us safer. That’s not going to make us stronger.” —President Barack Obama “Elegant but harrowing.” —San Francisco Chronicle “A potent cry of anguish from men and women buried way down in the hole.” —Kirkus Reviews

Book excerpt: In this provocative essay collection, the author “leans into her roles as both victim and predator [with] prose that’s casual and cool and often funny” (The New York Times). In six wide-ranging essays, Kathleen Hale traces some of the most treacherous fault lines in modern America—from sexual assault to Internet trolling, from environmental illness to our own animal nature. From hunting wild hogs in Florida to a standoff with an anonymous blogger, Hale takes no prisoners and fears no subject. “First I Got Pregnant. Then I Decided to Kill the Mountain Lion” recounts the month Hale spent tracking a wild cat in the Hollywood Hills while pregnant. “Prey” tells the troubling story of her sexual assault as a freshman in college. Through these and other essays, Hale wields razor-sharp wit, deep empathy, and daring honesty, even in detailing some of the most difficult moments of her life.

Book excerpt: Since its original publication in 1997, English with an Accent has inspired generations of scholars to investigate linguistic discrimination, social categorization, social structures, and power. This new edition is an attempt to retain the spirit of the original while enriching and expanding it to reflect the greater understanding of linguistic discrimination that it has helped create. This third edition has been substantially reworked to include: An updated concept of social categories, how they are constructed in interaction, and how they can be invoked and perceived through linguistic cues or language ideologies Refreshed accounts of the countless social and structural factors that go into linguistic discrimination Expanded attention to specific linguistic structures, language groups, and social domains that go beyond those provided in earlier editions New dedicated chapter on American Sign Language and its history of discrimination QR codes linking to external media, stories, and other forms of engagement beyond the text A revamped website with additional material English with an Accent remains a book that forces us to acknowledge and understand the ways language is used as an excuse for discrimination. The book will help readers to better understand issues of cross-cultural communication, to develop strategies for successful interactions across social difference, to recognize patterns of language that reflect implicit bias, and to gain awareness of how mistaken beliefs about language create and nurture prejudice and discrimination.

Book excerpt: August, twenty ninth, 2005, is a day that will forever be remembered by the citizens of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, for that was the day that changed our lives forever. Hurricane Katrina devastated our beautiful coast with her powerful winds, blinding rain and the highest storm surge, ever documented, in the history of the United States. This book is about many of our restaurants, along the coast, that were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Each of theses restaurants share the history of how they came to be as well as their personal Hurricane Katrina story. They have also graciously agreed to share some of their most delectable recipes, and believe me you will want to try them all (preferably in their restaurants) Some of our local Mississippi Coast Residents shared their very favorite recipes with us as well. Though not originally from Mississippi, Lee & Linda call the Mississippi Gulf Coast home. Linda writes children's book, as well as adult fiction and Lee is the illustrator. They both enjoyed successful careers in Television and Print advertising, and most recently were employed as Special Project Managers with Books Are Fun, a Readers Digest Company. Linda's first book, Awakening Nicholas, was written under the pen name of Lindsay Delaney; since then she has written the first two installments in her Strawberry Fairy series titled The Strawberry fairies Save Sandcastle Island and The Strawberry Fairies and The Secret Of Mystery Island . The third installment, The Strawberry Fairies And The Treasures Of Pirate's Island will be released soon along with Willow House; a mystery that takes place in the city of Ocean Springs, Mississippi.

Book excerpt: The Hugo- and Nebula-nominated story "Hong's Bluff" leads this new collection of science fiction stories by longtime writer William F. Wu. Some stories are light-hearted and others dramatic, about alternate worlds, cyborgs, clones, nanotech, war-games, and life in space, often with subjects involving Americans of Chinese descent. A new introduction and afterword to each story enhance this book. ~~~~~ Excerpt ~~~~~ In the glare of the spotlight, Daniel Zisuey Eng stood on the high dais in the Temple of Eng Zisuey, wearing his traditional black Chinese robe of embroidered silk and a white undertunic. Now at the end of the ritual, he watched the crowd standing far below him. The sweet smoke of incense wafted past, mixed with acrid smoke left by firecrackers set off earlier. ?Farewell,? Daniel?s voice boomed in English over the speakers. From the traditional Chinese orchestra, the fast banging of a light-weight gong built to a crescendo. Those below gazed up at Daniel in awe, curiosity, or skepticism, the majority of them also surnamed Eng. A few shouted insults; others called entreaties, even prayers. He calmly remained behind the altar of carved teak that was now covered with sacrifices of cash, pledges, jewelry, even children?s toys. ?Yi lu ping an,? Daniel intoned in Mandarin, wishing the crowd a peaceful journey. ?Yet lu ping on,? he repeated in Cantonese. As always, Daniel waited for a line of acolytes to form below the dais so no one could jump the rail and climb up to him. At the gong?s final crash, the spotlight went out, signaling the end of the ritual. In the sudden darkness, he whirled and strode off the dais, stage right. Twenty-eight years old, Daniel had been worshipped as a spirit reborn for nearly all of his adult life. ***** ??Nother day, ?nother dollar, Danny-boy.? At Daniel?s dressing-room door, Eric Leitch, the tall, brawny Chief of Personal Security, smirked at Daniel as he spoke in his Aussie-accented English, his sun-bleached flat-top standing stiff over his broad, square-jawed face. ?The acolytes are escortin? the crowd out in order; A-Okay, green lights all ?round.? ?Good,? Daniel muttered in annoyance, palming the doorplate to slip inside and close it again. He had no liking for his blue-uniformed Personal Security bodyguards. Even the acolytes were guards who wore traditional robes over their uniforms during the rituals. Chief Leitch spent most of his shift watching the temple grounds on monitors in his office. His unit worked for Mr. Eng Sen, as Daniel did?his nominal grandfather, a tycoon whose business empire owned Eng Zhouxian Do, this island near Hong Kong. The light came on in Daniel?s lavish dressing room at the rear of the temple??backstage,? in the jargon of his UCLA major in Theater Arts. A man?s voice, dry with age, came on the room?s speakers in Cantonese. ?Ah Suey, are you there? Keep your stage makeup on.? ?I?m here,? Daniel answered in the same language, recognizing Eng Sen?s voice. ?Screen on.? He flopped down in a tan leather-covered recliner, tired as always from the evening?s effort. The far wall brightened with the video image of the man he called ?Grandfather.? Seventy-two years old, Eng Sen wore his white hair short and had age spots removed by laser treatment. His bland, roundish face smiled with cold courtesy from a high, black leather chair; sunlight backlit him like a halo. ?I?m calling from my London office, Ah Suey. Remain in costume; I?ve instructed a new assistant of mine to bring visitors to you even as we speak.? ?A major sacrifice, Grandfather?? Daniel fought to keep disgust out of his voice as he pushed up from the recliner. ?My assistant, Meilin Lei, will handle the financial matters.? ?I know what to do, Grandfather,? Daniel said obediently.
