This book was released on 2006-11-29 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Asia is home to a large number of languages and dialects. The considerable body of linguists working on this region have made significant contributions to our understanding of language, society, and language in society on a global scale. Despite this, there is as yet no recognized international forum for the exchange of ideas amongst South Asian linguists. The YEARBOOK OF SOUTH ASIAN LANGUAGES AND LINGUISTICS is designed to be just that forum. It brings together empirical and theoretical research and serves as a testing ground for the articulation of new ideas and approaches which may be grounded in a study of South Asian languages but which have universal applicability. Each volume of this annual series will have four major sections: I. Invited contributions consisting of state-of-the-art essays on research in South Asian languages. II. Refereed open submissions focusing on relevant issues and providing various viewpoints. III. Reports from around the world book reviews and abstracts of doctoral theses. IV. A forum for dialogue; critiques; comments and discussions; reports on research activities; and conference announcements. In the words of the Editor-in-Chief, 'other than excellence and non-isolationism, we have no agenda and no thematic priorities'. This pioneering series will interest all those in the fields of sociolinguistics, language studies, grammar, literature and sociology.

Book excerpt: This book operates from the premise that linguistic identities are important because they make sense to people, are meaningful, and have an impact on the thinking and behaviour of individuals and groups, both overtly and covertly. The framework outlined here synthesises key works on linguistic identity and draws together insights from a range of disciplines, such as sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, discourse analysis, cognitive sciences, and social psychology. It investigates linguistic assertions of community identity in the multilingual context of the Kashmir region in India, by studying the dimensions of changing language roles and linguistic practices in relation to the process of creating and maintaining new linguistic identities under different circumstances. It examines the nature of changing language roles as a combination of several linguistic and extra-linguistic factors, which include script uncertainty, interlingual diglossia, language attrition, language policies of the state, collective attitudes towards language(s), corresponding speech communities, intergenerational transmission, and instrumental orientation, among others. It demonstrates that changes in role are principally motivated by various factors, which may lead to the demise of the distinct symbol and roots of the Kashmiri linguistic-cultural identity in favour of the non-native code, Urdu, which could emerge as the primary linguistic identity in the near future.

Book excerpt: English Language Teaching (ELT), especially English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL), has been witnessing unprecedented changes in curriculum, teaching methodology, and the application of learning theories. This has created a demand for teachers who can teach English to learners of varied cultural, socio-economic and psychological backgrounds. The book, in its second edition, continues to discuss the modern trends, innovations, as well as the difficulties and challenges in teaching and learning ESL in a non-native context. The book, with contributions from many experts (each one specializing in a particular field) from countries such as UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, India, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, China, and Japan, provides new methods, strategies and application-oriented solutions to overcome the problems in a practical way. The book deals with all topics pertinent to English as a Second Language or English for the non-native speakers, and these are further reinforced by a large number of examples and quotations from different sources. The new edition comes along with thoroughly improvised chapters on Narrative Inquiry for Teacher Development (Chapter 13) and Mass Media, Language Attitudes and Language Interaction Phenomena (Chapter 23): to provide an insight on the innovative approaches in Teacher training and in classrooms, and new approaches and changing language dimensions in the world of media, and in general. What distinguishes the text is its focus on modern innovations and use of technology in ELT/CLT (Communicative Language Teaching). Postgraduate Students of English, teachers, teacher-trainees (B.Ed./M.A. Education/M.Ed.), and teacher-educators who are concerned with teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) should find this book immensely helpful.a

This book was released on 2022-10-31 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a case study on lexical error analysis in the translation products of Arab English majors at the university level with important implications for Arabic-speaking countries. It provides detailed analyses and explanations of the main lexical areas that cause specific difficulties for these students, while also identifying their potential sources. The respective chapters discuss several areas related to the context of the research, the field of SLA, error analysis, language transfer, error taxonomies, language learning, language teaching, and translation training. The analyses and findings presented here contribute to the linguistic field by developing a comprehensive list of lexical error categories based on form, content, and origin of influence regarding translation products. In addition, the book sheds light on the pedagogical aspects contributing to the enhancement of ESL/EFL teaching in the Arab context as well as other contexts where English is taught as a foreign language. The book will help educators and curriculum writers in designing materials, and language researchers as a groundwork for their studies of L2 learners’ written products.
