The very title of the work, Streit der Fakultäten (Dispute between the Faculties), published in 1797, makes it clear that the various disciplines are related critically, even polemically, to each other. As academic disciplines they share common obligations of knowledge, enlightenment and education; in their relationship with each other, however, they have the duty to contest the means and aims of knowledge. There can only be living science where this dispute about knowledge is conducted with the means of knowledge. In this volume, representatives of the faculties addressed by Kant give their assessment of Kant's relevance for their disciplines. As the Dispute between the Faculties was and is of importance for the foundation of the University of Berlin, Kant's contribution to university reform is also considered.

Fünf Jahre vor seinem Tod, nach Beendigung seiner Lehrtätigkeit 1797, gelang ihm die 1798 Drucklegung der drei Teile in einem Band. Geschrieben wurden sie alle schon früher, wobei lediglich der dritte Teil, der Streit mit der medizinischen Fakultät, bereits vorher erscheinen konnte. Dieser war von Hufeland im „Journal der praktischen Arzneikunde und Wundarzneikunst” Anfang 1798 herausgebracht worden. Der erste Teil, der Streit mit der Theologischen Fakultät, scheiterte im Jahre 1794 an der Preußischen Regierung, der zweite Teil, der Streit mit der Juristischen Fakultät, 1797 an einem Verbot durch die Zensur. Erst während der neuerlichen Versuche zur Veröffentlichung wurde Kant bewusst, dass diese drei Schriften eine systematische Einheit bilden. Alle Teile beschäftigen sich nämlich mit dem Streit der unteren Fakultät (der philosophischen oder Artistenfakultät) mit den drei oberen. Daher seien sie auch geeignet zusammen in einem Band zu erscheinen. Als kleine Schrift ist der „Streit der Fakultäten” wohl eher auf Grund des Inhalts als des Umfangs zu bezeichnen. Zusammen kommen alle drei Abschnitte immerhin auf ca. 120 sehr lesenswerte Seiten. Zum Inhalt macht Kant das - nicht nur nach seiner Meinungmerkwürdige Verhältnis der vier Fakultäten an den Universitäten. Der Maxime der Aufklärung folgend, sich der selbstverschuldeten Unmündigkeit zu entledigen, enthebt er die (den Prinzipien der Vernunft verschriebene) philosophische Fakultät den Niederungen der Universitäten und reklamiert für sie die Position eines Korrektivs über die Lehren der dogmatisch ausbildenden oberen Fakultäten. Dabei lässt er es an unterhaltsamer Kritik gegenüber den Lehrinhalten und dem Selbstverständnis der oberen nicht mangeln. Allerdings war der Weg zur Veröffentlichung erst mit der Inthronisation Friedrich Wilhelm III. und der damit einhergehenden Aufhebung des Woellnerschen Zensurediktes 1798 frei. In dieser Verschriftlichung meines Referates über den Streit der Fakultäten werde ich Kants Ausführungen recht nah folgen. Im ersten Abschnitt werde ich die Vorrede mit ihren Erläuterungen zur Veröffentlichungsgeschichte behandeln, darin skizziert Kant sowohl die politischen Schwierigkeiten der Schriftlegung als auch die Problematik des Religionsunterrichts innerhalb der Theologischen Fakultät.

Capitalism has not only been the topic for Marxist economics and for the Frankfurt School but also for the Historical School and for the postmarxist theory of capitalism in Ordo- and Neo-Liberalism as well as in Solidarism. The question of the foundations of the economic order of the market economy and of capitalism as well as the problem whether a third path between capitalism and social ism is possible occupied this tradition from the Historical School to Ordo Liberalism and the theory of the social market economy. The theory of capitalism and of the social market economy as well as the critique and reform developed in this theoretical tradition is important for the theory of economic systems as well as for today's problems of the eco nomic order. Its relevance for the present world economy is visible in the discussions whether there exist different models of capitalism and whether they can be described as the Anglo-American and as the Rhenish model of capitalism influenced by the thought of the German economic tradition. Michel Albert, the author of this classification, gave the key-word in his book Capitalism against Capitalism. The papers of this book can help to clarify this debate by giving a first hand introduction to some of the main economic thinkers of capitalism.
