Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Critical Philosophy of Immanuel Kant, Vol. 1 of 2 The object of this book is to give a connected view of the Critical Philosophy, showing the relations of the three Critiques to each other, and to the other works of Kant which may be regarded as illustrations or developments of his main argument. The first part, on the Critique of Pure Reason, deals with the same subject as my former work, entitled The Philosophy of Kant, but, except in a few passages, it is not a reproduction of it. Since the date of its publication, many important contributions to the study of Kant have been made in Germany and other countries. I wish especially to express my indebtedness to the writings of Dr. Vaihinger, Benno Erdmann, Cohen, Paulsen, Arnoldt, Stadtler, Staudinger, and Riehl; also of the late Professor Green and Professor Watson. In particular, Dr. Erdmann's publication of the Reflexionen Kant's has thrown much new light on the development of the Kantian philosophy, and Dr. Vaihinger's acute statement of the main Kantian in his Commentary is full of instruction and suggestion for every student. I have sometimes given references to these and other writers; but often I have found it impossible to recall or to trace what I owe to them, and must content myself in the main with this general acknowledgment of my obligations. I also owe much to the criticisms of my former book by various writers, particularly by Dr. Hutchison Stirling, by Mr. Balfour, and by Dr. Vaihinger; and I have attempted to meet them by giving a more careful and accurate statement of Kant's argument, and a fuller and more thorough estimate of its bearing and value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kant's Critical Philosophy for English Readers, Vol. 1: The Æsthetic and Analytic The present work is intended to replace my trans lation of Kuno Fischer's Commentary on Kant's Philosophy, which is now nearly out of print. For though that Commentary, modified and corrected by many notes, was generally accepted in England as a fair exposition of the Cn'tz'cé, I am now persuaded that many more corrections were necessary, and that a Second Edition must contain throughout two expositions, one in the text, and another in the notes. It seemed therefore better to yield to the advice of many competent friends, and produce an independent work, profiting where I could by the German commentaries, but presenting to the reader a consistent and uniform text. I have adhered much more faithfully than Kuno Fischer, or indeed any other Commentator I have met, to Kant's text. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kant's Kritik of Judgment: With Introduction and Notes There are not wanting indications that public interest in the Critical Philosophy has been quickened of recent days in these countries, as well as in America. To lighten the toil of penetrating through the wilderness of Kant's long sentences, the English student has now many aids, which those who began their studies fifteen or twenty years ago did not enjoy. Translations, paraphrases, criticisms, have been published in considerable numbers; so that if it is not yet true that "he who runs may read," it may at least be said that a patient student of ordinary industry and intelligence has his way made plain before him. And yet the very number of aids is dangerous. Whatever may be the value of short and easy handbooks in other departments of science, it is certain that no man will become a philosopher, no man will even acquire a satisfactory knowledge of the history of philosophy, without personal and prolonged study of the ipsissima verba of the great masters of human thought.
